We will see you again over the rainbow bridge.

We are saddened to share the passing of retired K-9 Rex, badge . Rex was acquired after he finished a tour in Afghanistan working with private contractors. He was assigned to Officer Mark Jaeger for a brief time here at Wausau PD in 2015 until it was determined his time overseas was too much to overcome and he was just ready for the retired life. The organization we were using gave Rex to Officer Jaeger to be a pet, and he has been living in retirement since. While he served a short career here in our unit, we still wanted to recognize his service and thank Officer Jaeger and his family for caring for him since.

It is that time of year again!
So many of you may start seeing these spots on your pets, especially your dogs bellies. It is not ringworm and it is not tick bites even though many people are worried they look like a classic tick bulls eye pattern associated with Lyme disease. These are bites caused by black flies or no see-ums as they are some times called. They are usually non irritating and will clear up on their own in a few days. And one fun fact, dogs do not develop the bulls eye rash associated with Lyme disease like humans do!

This is why you shouldn't litter. Animals look for food where they can however it doesn't always end well for them. Please use trash receptacles and keep our planet clean.

Consider for a moment that you are a creature that comes up to the average person's knee. You are unable to understand language other than about 20 words. You have a routine that you do with your family regularly, but now it is Halloween. There is a ton of excitement and many...people...creatures...something coming to your door. You don't understand them though because you cannot see their faces, or easily read their body language. There is something covering them that you don't normally see. Maybe you need to protect yourself or your family from this. Or maybe you should hide.

This is what your dog may perceive happening on Halloween. Costumes are scary, the ones that people wear as well as the ones people put on their dogs. Please keep your animal safe by taking this into consideration and providing them a safe and secure place to be while we celebrate a human holiday.

Pet costumes can be fun—if you consider them from your pet’s point of view

The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of other law enforcement and animal control partners, seized 22 dogs and one cat from a residence on Chokecherry Road in the Town of Hull earlier today. The Animal Control Enforcement Team will continue to work with the property owner to capture three dogs and three cats that were unable to be captured today and remain on the property.

Following an initial investigation into the living conditions of the people and animals at the residence, an additional investigation completed by the Animal Control Enforcement Team found probable neglect conditions involving numerous dogs and cats, with significant behavioral concerns amongst the dogs. Upon rescue, the animals were evaluated by a veterinarian before being transferred to a shelter facility.

The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Humane Society of Marathon County and Humane Officers from the Wausau Police Department.

The investigation is ongoing, and no further details are available at this time.
