Everyone share this please! Help the small farms to help their animals when they are sick and a vet is not available!
I stay off politics as much as I can, but when we advocate daily that everyone should and , it is important to us to also let you know what we deal with so you can make important, educated decisions about where and how your food come from.
Quick update on Tressa - she's down again.
We call 5 vets within an hour of our farm. They either don't want to come out or cannot come out. The lack of large animal veterinarians is severe in the country, and small farmers like us feel this more often than we like to think about. But that's not anyone doing...people choose career paths that's best for them and we can't blame them for it.
So what do we do? Well, we just do it. Literally. We do our own vaccination, we make sure to have proper meds on hand, and we get informed as much as we can. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
If you talk to your farmers, I promise you that all of us want nothing but to treat our animals right. We care about them, even though they are destined to be processed. We love them. That's why we do what we do. So how can we care for them if the government continues to take away our ability to properly care for our animals?
Within weeks, we will no longer have the ability to get most common life-saving medications for our farm animals. Unless you have a vet prescription.
How am I gonna get a prescription if we can't get anyone to come out?
Losing even just one animal - a grown cow, a boar, or even a tiny piglet...it represents not just heartaches but also hundreds (or thousands in some cases) of dollars in lost revenue. And when you are a small business owner - every dollar counts.
So even if I can get a prescription from a vet, I now face added expenses from the vet in addition to the cost of the medication. It's justifiable... our vet, too, is a small business owner and his time is valuable. But you see how this can be avoided altogether?
Help us, please.
Help your farmers. Contact your legislator, congressmen, and any government officials and help us advocate for freedom to care for animals so that we may lower our food cost and increase food access across the nation.
