Last week, a small, pregnant dog was found abandoned on a back road in Pike County. She was a baby herself and was so big it was difficult for her to walk. In the pound, she would nibble at her food so we knew she was getting close to delivery. When she went to the vet, Dr. Beth was surprised to see such a small dog had a big belly. To ensure she was pregnant, and her belly was not a tumor, she did a quick ultrasound. Sure enough, there were skeletons present.
Having puppies in the pound is one of the worst scenarios for us. She needed out as soon as possible. After a rescue committed to her, it needed to be decided how to transport her there. After much discussion, the transport coordinator decided to enlist the help of Pilots and Paws. In our history, this has happened only three times. It would be the fastest and safest way to get her out. I had my annual Christmas shopping trip yesterday morning, but I canceled it to make sure she was able to catch her flight. There are a lot of variables in an airplane transport and I wanted to ensure she didn’t miss her opportunity. A small plane arrived at Pike airport, she was loaded, and she continued north. After landing, she was loaded on a small jet plane and continued to her foster home. By the evening, she was resting in her own soft bed.
This is an unusual transport, but we will do anything we can to get the pound dogs to safety. The pound is no place to deliver puppies. She is still a puppy herself, and she will have a big litter to deliver. Her owner did nothing to ensure her safety. Abandoned on a back road, very pregnant and has two tick borne diseases. Now, she has been vetted, found people who love her and experienced things her previous owners never will. She has a better life path now and will never have the burden of carrying another large litter again. Things are looking up for her now!
