Closer to home now, there have been 14 cases of Potomac Horse Fever in eastern Iowa this week.

It is a disease that is uncommon here, and so not routinely vaccinated against. It is not contagious between animals. The “outbreak situations” occur because the Neorickettsial organism that causes it is INSIDE the parasites (trematodes) that live INSIDE certain water flies and snails that are IN stagnant water supplies. The horse accidentally ingests the flies, and therefore also the trematode parasite, and therefore also the Neorickettsia that causes the disease in horses. Severe diarrhea, high fever, lethargy, colic, weight loss, and secondary laminitis, are a few of the symptoms.

Although the vaccine is not 100% efficacious, the symptoms and severity of the disease should be greatly reduced, and your horse will likely survive.

Please call the Readlyn Veterinary Associates office for your horses’ vaccine and booster appointments. 319-279-3867.

The best way to reduce winter-time sheath-swelling is to keep your gelding moving around. If you’re like me, and feel it’s too cold to ride right now, one way to keep your horses moving is to have different hay stations. Typically I don’t advocate feeding off the ground, but they don’t waste much from a few flakes on the fresh snow. In addition, we use a tire feeder, and our elevated hay feeder keep our guys in the “grazing mode” on these cold days.

Even though we are well-into-winter, this is a good article about the whys and hows of letting your equine take the winter off from shoes.

Going barefoot can benefit many horses, especially during the cold months when snow can pack onto steel. But pulling shoes requires planning to ensure horses’ continued comfort.

There have been lots of inquiries about hind gut health recently. Here are three links with good information (and of course their company’s products)…products SES approves of, beyond the normal Omeprazole therapy. The goal of these products is to provide a stable hindgut environment, so repeated or maintenance dosing of Omeprazole can sometimes be avoided. Email or call with further questions!

Water-this is very important even when it’s cold! If they won’t drink it cold, offer warm twice per day. Check your waterers that they haven’t frozen. Keeping your horse hydrated will help prevent impaction colic, which is most common in the winter.
