The Texas Department of State Health Services notified the City of Midlothian Animal Services Division on Monday, June 24, 2024, that a skunk taken from Billy Ray Road has tested POSITIVE for rabies.

On June 19, 2024, an Animal Control Officer was called to a residence in the 3000 block of Billy Ray Road to respond to a possibly rabid skunk. It was reported that the skunk appeared sick, would get up but fall back down. Animal Services staff sent the skunk off for rabies testing (to the State). The City of Midlothian was notified today that the skunk tested positive for rabies. There has been no known direct contact with the skunk.

Once infected, rabies is a virus that has a 100 percent fatality rate when left untreated in mammals including humans.

State Law requires all cats and dogs over 4 months of age to be current on rabies vaccinations.

Public health officials recommend the following precautions to protect everyone from exposure to rabies:
*Report any sick or strange acting wildlife.
*Vaccinate pets and livestock.
*Vaccinate livestock with frequent human contact.
*Do not feed wildlife or stray animals and discourage them from seeking food near your home.
*Do not feed strays.
*Do not approach an unknown animal, either wild or domestic.
*Report all animal bites and any contact with bats to Animal Services. Human rabies can be prevented with a series of vaccines.
*Keep garbage cans tightly covered and avoid storing food outside.
*Children should be instructed to tell an adult immediately if they were bitten or scratched by any animal.

To report loose animals or sick wildlife, please contact the police non-emergency number at 972-775-3333 or Animal Services at 972-775-7614.

Hopefully you don’t need reminding but just in case, it’s dangerously cold out and non double coated dog breeds NEED to be indoors or in a warm shelter. If you have a double coated working breed/LGD please provide them shelter to use if needed. Pic of our Gracie Lou in her cable knit sweater! ❤️

‼️EMERGENCY HELP NEEDED‼️
❄️WINTER WEATHER WATCH❄️

Sunday-Tuesday the temps are going to be brutal in the DFW area. We desperately need help with our dogs at the Glenn Heights Shelter (located just South of Dallas).

These dogs do not get the luxury of being in a warm indoor shelter. They are outside, in outdoor kennels. They feel the blazing hot sun in the summer months, and now we are about to have freezing temps that they will have to endure. The wind chill will be unbearable for the dogs!

We are in DESPERATE NEED of TEMP FOSTERS at least Sunday-Tuesday. If you are willing to save a life, and help us for a few days, we would be EXTREMELY GRATEFUL! We will help with any supplies needing during their stay.

PLEASE CONTACT: Friends of Glenn Heights Animal Shelter for more info.
