A reminder to give your flea/tick prevention as we see more of these warm days!

A brief spell of warmer weather during the winter can give fleas and ticks the cue to emerge and infest your furry friends. Keep your pets protected year-round from those pesky parasites!

The Companion Animal Parasite Council has provided some helpful maps to show just how real tick borne disease is in MA. 1 in 5 dogs are testing positive for Anaplasmosis right now in Middlesex County out of 7,613 that were tested!

A great night filled with good food, great company, and lots of laughs. A few pictures from our ADAvet Veterinary Clinic holiday party last weekend at Samba with comedian Mr. Brad Mastrangelo!

From 15 employees in 2021 when we first opened, to now 32 employees and already a building expansion, none of it would be possible without the three owners, Dr. Antonietta Orlandi, Dr. Alma Rotolo, and Dr. Deirdre Ryan.

We all owe you the utmost gratitude for creating this family work atmosphere and encouraging us and understanding how to bring out the best in everyone. You all truly encompass all parts of ADAvet's mission statement:

Thanksgiving brings together family and friends, but it can also carry some hazards for your furry family members. The ADAvet Team would like to share some important tips so you can enjoy your holiday with your pets!

🦃 𝙏𝒉𝙖𝒏𝙠𝒔𝙜𝒊𝙫𝒊𝙣𝒈 𝑷𝙚𝒕 𝑺𝙖𝒇𝙚𝒕𝙮 𝙏𝒊𝙥𝒔 🦃

𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 - 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐭. Avoid giving your pet turkey meat, especially fatty dark meat and skin that can cause pancreatitis and never give them any leftover bones. Not only are bones a choking hazard, but they can splinter inside your pet’s digestive tract and cause a trip to the emergency vet. Garlic, onion, leeks, and chives. These seasonings are common in many Thanksgiving dishes and are toxic to dogs and cats.

𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. Some festive plants, such as lilies and chrysanthemums, can be toxic to pets. Keep them out of your pet's reach or opt for pet-friendly decorations.

𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐨𝐮𝐭! Be sure your trash can has a secure lid or the trash bin is kept behind a closed door. Disposed leftovers can be quite tempting for your furry friend, but also potentially a big problem.

𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐝𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡. Unbaked yeast dough can cause a stomach blockage if eaten because the yeast in the dough makes it rise and expand. Plus, the natural fermentation of the yeast in your cat or dog’s stomach can be toxic. If you plan on baking some delicious dinner rolls for Thanksgiving, make sure to proof your dough somewhere that your pet can’t get to it, such as in a turned-off oven or microwave, not right on the counter where it’s often in your pet’s easy reach.

𝐏𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐬! Desserts like pies, fruitcakes, or cookies should be kept out of your pet’s reach as well. Many people know that chocolate is toxic for dogs and cats, but so are raisins, currants, and the popular sugar-substitute xylitol. Xylitol, even in small amounts, is toxic to dogs, so keep that slice of keto-friendly/diabetic-friendly/sugar-free pie to yourself.

1. 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵. Candies containing xylitol and chocolate are toxic.

2. 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆. Make sure there aren't any small pieces your pet could choke on and make sure it is comfortable and not restrictive.

3. 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿. The front door is a high traffic area with trick-or-treaters and a panicked or excited pet may try to escape when given the chance.

4. 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗽𝗲𝘁'𝘀 𝗜𝗗. Make sure ID tags are up-to-date in case your pet gets lost.

October is National Pit Bull Awareness Month — a time to celebrate bully breed dogs and educate ourselves and others about this often misunderstood dog breed.

Many think that Pit Bull refers to one specific type of dog, but it is actually an umbrella term describing a wide group of different bully breeds like American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, American Bull Terriers, and American Bulldogs. Unfortunately, bully breeds continue to be the victims of abuse and discrimination. They are often the first to be euthanized in shelters, simply because of their breed.

Like most dogs, pit bulls have a wide range of personalities and are often sweet, gentle, and incredibly loyal animals. In fact, each year, the American Temperament Testing Society tests over 240 dog breeds. When it comes to pit bull-type dogs, they consistently achieve a passing score that’s as good or better than other popular breeds. With proper care and training and exercise, they can make a fantastic addition to your family.

In honor of National Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week:

If you've ever needed a vet, you've needed a vet tech. A single vet tech performs the roles of an anesthesiologist, pharmacist, phlebotomist, radiology technician, surgical assistant, dental hygienist, and much more across multiple species. I'll emphasize it once more: that's the job of ONE person. They laugh with you, cry with you, and treat each pet like it is their own.

We are so incredibly proud of our amazing veterinary technicians at ADAvet Veterinary Clinic!!

The Purple Leash Project was born out of Purina’s mission to bring and keep pets and people together so no survivor has to choose between their own safety and the safety of their pet.
