🦷Happy Pet Dental Month🦷

Tell the truth: When was the last time you gave any thought to your pet's dental health? If it's been a while - or maybe never - you're not alone.

Changes in our pets’ oral health often goes unnoticed because pets don’t always show discomfort until dental or gum disease is severe. In some cases, they don’t show obvious signs even when disease is advanced. By age 3 - 70%-80% of dogs and cats are showing signs of periodontal disease! This is one of many reasons why semiannual exams with your veterinarian are so important. Without regular dental prevention, tartar will begin to build up. As the process becomes more severe, it can escalate to periodontitis, which involves gum recession, tooth decay, bone loss around the tooth, and infection - in simpler words, a VERY expensive dental procedure!

Here is your reminder that proper oral health can make a world of a difference to you and your pet! ❤️

❓Did You Know❓

It costs about $430/year for a medium size dog to be on prevention but about $2000 to treat heartworm disease with lasting effects from the disease? That's 5 times the cost of annual prevention!
You may think to yourself, "it's the middle of winter, why does she need it this month?" We've all thought it, but the truth is that she should be taking the medication each and every month as recommended by the American Heartworm Society.
You may think since your kitty is indoor-only they are safe from mosquitoes. Makes sense right? Well 1 in 4 cats that are diagnosed with heartworm disease are indoor-only cats. As for treatment for our kitty friends? Sorry Fluffy, there isn't one.

Year round prevention for parasite protection is crucial in our New England seasons!

⚠️ H5N1, a type A influenza virus, is spreading among birds and some mammals in the U.S., including cats!

Here’s how you can help protect your pets:

· Avoid feeding raw meat or dairy - this includes raw diets.
· Keep cats indoors to limit exposure to wildlife.
· While the risk to dogs is less clear, it’s best to keep all pets away from dead animals, livestock, wildlife, and their waste.
· If your pet shows signs of illness, such as lethargy, fever, or respiratory issues, contact your veterinarian.

This is a developing situation, but taking simple precautions can help keep your pet safe. Share it to raise awareness!

❗January is National Train Your Dog Month🐶❗

Many dogs only see the vet for exams and vaccines or when they’re already feeling sick, so it doesn’t take long for them to develop a negative view of the office. But what if you could make taking them to the vet less stressful through training?

Here are some tips:
➡️ Practice handling your dog: Start with simple handling exercises and gently look in the ears, lift the lip and look at their teeth, handle the paws, and lift their tail. Make sure to include lots of yummy treats so your dog learns to associate handling with rewards. If your dog is acting hesitant or scared, take a step back.

➡️ Weighing your dog can be harder than you think. Feel free to stop in at any time to practice using the scale with a high value treat of choice. Some pet stores also have scales you can ask to use.
