When Nolan Turner, now adopted, came into rescue right after that FM's beloved Rollins Angleton passed, his nearly identical coloring felt like a sign from heaven.

Interestingly, he also shares the same condition Rollins had: nasal fold intertrigo, which is inflammation and irritation in the skin folds near the nose. This is not due to allergies, but rather a structural issue not uncommon in brachycephalic breeds such as the Shih Tzu, Pekingese, Pug, English Bulldog, French Bulldog, and Shar Pei.

With Rollins, a specialist at Michigan State University Veterinary Medical Center had suggested surgery if daily maintenance did not work. That FM chose the non-surgical route then, and is doing the same with Nolan now. However, it takes strict discipline as missing even one day can disrupt the entire routine.

⁉️ Do you have a dog with nasal fold intertrigo? What is your treatment or maintenance routine? That FM would love to hear what works for you.

Remembering Dr. Jane Goodall, whose life’s work forever changed how we see and understand the animal world. Jane often shared that her childhood dog, Rusty, was her first teacher, shaping her understanding of animal behavior and leaving lessons that would guide her for a lifetime.

As she said, "I had a wonderful teacher about animal behavior – my dog Rusty. He taught me that animals have personalities, minds, and feelings."

The lessons Rusty gave her carried into her groundbreaking research with chimpanzees in Tanzania, and continue to inspire generations to treat all creatures, great and small, with empathy and respect.

All the babies are now groomed (incidentally a savings of at least $600 every few months since we do it in-house). Otherwise, that FM would be tempted to try her hand at this hilarious (but uber cute) bowl cut!

📸 Unknown. We honor valid DCMA takedown notices.

My name is Nevin Kentucky. I am six years old and full of energy. I love toys, roughhousing with the 1776 crew, and stirring up a little fun...or chaos.

Sometimes I swipe food from the cats, sometimes I do not. You never know with me.

But one thing never changes: I keep asking that FM...

"Why do I not have a family of my own yet?"

I am ready for my forever family. Are you ready for me?

Nevin's adoption bio is in the comments.

In the house!!

Meet Peluchin South-Carolina, a 1.5-year-old Shih Tzu puppy. ☘️💚

He was surrendered by his family to a sanctuary before being transferred to FM Sylvia. Now, he is settling into foster care and showing us what a sweet, active lovebug he really is. Peluchin weighs a healthy 12 pounds and gets along well with other dogs.

His original name means "plush", which suits him perfectly. He understands both English and Spanish, making him quite the smart little polyglot. (Several of our dogs at the C even understand French, so he is in good company!)

Peluchin has already received most of his white-glove veterinary care, and the remainder will be completed before he becomes available for adoption. For now, he is focusing on adjusting to his new environment and enjoying life in his foster home.

We adopt within the continental US and offer free in-cabin air transport to most major airports, as well as road transport. Exceptions apply.

Rían Miller-Turner was once the ultimate stud muffin before coming into rescue.

His description read like a sales pitch: "9 pounds, AKC-registered, stunning milk chocolate liver coat, short legs, stocky build, cobby body, perfect round head, and amazing golden eyes. He comes from well-known small lines and carries a rainbow of color." A Shih Tzu breeder’s dream.

That FM wonders how many puppies he sired, what they look like, and which pieces of him they inherited – his bold streak with other dogs or his anxious side when separated from humans. We will never know...Wherever they are, little pieces of Rían live on in them.

What we do know is that Rían's stud days are well behind him, and now, he gets to live for himself as the sweetest chapter of his story unfolds.

All but one of the 1776 crew are groomed. None of that stinky winky look of neglect around here.

For those new to us, Brody Turner is an AKC-registered Lhasa Apso with a spicy temperament who has been with us since 2019. He reminds that FM of her nephew rescue Lhasa, Bruno, who was just as much of a handful. She has a soft spot for the good bad boys because they deserve a chance too.

Keegan Turner is another cutie in our care who is busy learning the basic skills he will need for a happy life in his future adoptive home.

He is being socialized with adults, older children, cats, and dogs. So far, Keegan has shown himself to be friendly with both men and women, a respectful 10-year-old boy, and the indoor cats in his foster home. He gets along with the dogs in the household for the most part, though he will not hesitate to "speak up" when he feels it is needed. Keegan naturally gravitates toward the younger pups and sometimes plays a bit rough. He warms up to respectful dogs he meets outside, regardless of their size.

Keegan is a 2-year-old Shichon with a spicy little disposition who does not like to be hurried. He is easy to manage when one takes the time to communicate with him gently and respectfully.

Keegan is not yet adoptable, but we invite you to follow his journey with us so you will be among the first to know when he becomes available.

Rescue, for us, is not about quick matches. We work with the underdogs – the ones who need time, patience, and healing before they are ready for forever homes.

That is why what you see here is not a "shopping list" of dogs. It is the story of each journey, shared so you can really understand who they are becoming.

The people who stay with us, follow along, and grow to know our dogs are the ones who end up with the most successful adoptions. They see the work, the progress, and the spirit behind each pup.

We are looking for adopters who share that commitment and want to meet our dogs where they are and walk with them the rest of the way. If that is you, you will find the most rewarding bond here. ☘️💚

Tiernan Turner is on watch duty, keeping an eye out for intruders.

He is still in training to be his very best self, so is not quite adoptable yet. ☘️💚
