Thinking About Rehoming Because Life Is Busy? Read This.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed and wondering if rehoming your sugar gliders is your only option because life is hectic right now, take a breath. You might not need to go that route.
We all go through demanding seasons: work, school, illness, moving, caregiving. Life shifts, and that’s okay. The good news is that gliders don’t always need as much from us as we think.
Here are some ways to make things work without giving them up:
🖥️ Use cameras
Set up a camera near the cage so you can check in remotely. It’s a simple way to monitor behavior and give yourself peace of mind when you’re not home.
👥 Build a support system
Even one friend or family member who knows the basics of glider care can make a huge difference. It is a good idea to teach at least one or two people how to care for them properly. The more, the better. Having someone who can step in for feedings, bonding time, or emergencies helps relieve a lot of pressure.
🛖 Expand and enrich their cage
If you’re short on time for out-of-cage play, give extra thought to their habitat. A well-set-up cage can offer plenty of stimulation and comfort.
• The general rule of thumb is one wheel for every two gliders. Once you know your gliders better, you can adjust that. Some need more wheels, especially high-energy ones. Others, like older or less active gliders, may not use them as much.
• Be sure to have plenty of toys, and rotate them regularly to keep things interesting.
• Provide multiple pouches so gliders who want alone time have the option to sleep separately if they choose.
• And of course, always double-check that everything in the cage is safe. Avoid loose threads, unsafe materials, or anything that could trap a toe or tail.
🛏️ Consider short-term boarding
If things are really tough, Sugar Haven may be able to help. In some cases, we’ve boarded gliders with one of our fosters for just the cost of their food and daily supplies. Vet care would still need to be covered. This is not something we are always able to offer, but if you’ve exhausted all other options, please reach out and talk to us.

🔎 Don’t forget daily check-ins
Even during busy seasons, it’s important to do a headcount and check on each glider daily. A great way to do this is by offering a treat. They’ll usually come right over, giving you a good view of their movement and condition while keeping the experience positive.
✨ And remember, your gliders may be doing better than you think
As long as they have proper food, a friend (gliders should never be housed alone), an appropriate number of wheels, enrichment, and enough space, many gliders are perfectly content staying in their cage. They don’t always need hours of interaction every day to be happy and healthy.
