The Alan Purcell Wayne Animal Shelter of Wayne, NJ maintains a safe and caring environment until the animal is either reclaimed or adopted. While Shelter Workers and Volunteers supply the love and compassion needed for each homeless animal, placing them in a new, loving home is the main priority. Located at:

Mama Soup came to us with her babies, but all her little ones have found their forever homes a while ago, and now it’s her turn! Having spent much of her life outside, Mama Soup was understandably scared when she first arrived at the shelter. But with patience and understanding, she’s slowly blossomed into the sweet, spunky cat she is today.

She absolutely loves head scratches and will often boop you for pets. In the past, she was a bit sassy, and if you went too fast, she might swat (though never using her claws!). Now, Mama Soup is much more relaxed and has become a favorite of many of the shelter staff. She’s still a little shy at times but is incredibly sweet once she’s comfortable with you.

Mama Soup needs a patient adopter who will take their time getting to know her and allow her to adjust at her own pace. If you’re looking for a fun, independent cat with a big personality, Mama Soup might just be the one for you!

🏡 LONGEST RESIDENT ALERT: SALEM 🖤 (aka Former Feline Menace Turned Certified Mush)

Once upon a time, a kitten named Salem arrived at our shelter... and immediately started bullying everyone. His siblings? Bullied. Our staff? Bullied. Honestly, it was his full-time job. He smacked us around like we owed him money.

Salem is gorgeous, no doubt. He gained lots of attention—but we warned people: he is NOT a cuddly lap cat and he will act a fool. And oh boy, he DID. Right in front of potential adopters. Every. Single. Time. 😑

But THEN… something happened. One day, Salem just woke up different. Like he had a full redemption arc in his sleep. Suddenly, he wanted to be HELD. He wanted to be PET. He wanted to LOUNGE AROUND like a total lovebug. Like… SIR? Where has this version of you been?!?

We don’t know what triggered the transformation (therapy? meditation? new moon?), but we’re not asking questions. We’re just enjoying the mushy, snuggly, attention-loving cat he’s become. 🥹

🛑 A couple notes:

Salem still does NOT like other cats. Like at all. Please don’t try him.

He MUST be the only pet.

But if you're a human? He’s all in.

So please, come meet this reformed bad boy. He’s been waiting a long time, and maybe he was just waiting for YOU. 🖤

Our shelter pups saw that and said:

We saw another shelter do this hilarious trend and just had to jump on it! Seeing amazing pitties and blocky-headed besties get overlooked due to breed discrimination breaks our hearts—these dogs are just as deserving of love as any “fancy” or “designer” breed. Let’s keep lifting each other up as shelters and rescues to shine the spotlight on these incredible, adoptable dogs!

🚨 TINGA NEEDS A HOME! 🚨

Tinga has been waiting way too long, and we can’t understand why. We thought she’d be adopted in a heartbeat, but here she is, still waiting… still watching as others leave while she stays behind. 💔

She’s young, fun, and bursting with personality! Tinga is one of those dogs that makes you smile just by being around her. She’s full of life, energy, and so much love to give. 🐾💖

And let’s talk about his churro stick addiction — it’s legendary. He lights up the second he sees one. It’s hilarious and heartwarming.

Clifford is FIV+, which simply means his immune system needs a little extra TLC — but don’t worry, he can live a totally normal life with regular vet care and of course an indoor only home.

It doesn't mean he's sick. Many FIV+ cats live long, happy, healthy lives!
It's not contagious to humans or dogs.

Johnny is Still Waiting… and It Breaks Our Hearts 💛

Johnny is the kind of dog who reminds you to slow down and enjoy the little things. He’s an old soul who lives for laid-back walks, playful gallops through the yard, and long naps on a soft bed. Life doesn't have to be complicated—at least not for Johnny.

He’s as low-maintenance as they come. A little fresh air, some quiet time, and a bit of love is all he needs to be happy. He doesn’t ask for much—just a place to relax and a person to hang out with.

But here’s the hard part: Johnny has been waiting far too long for someone to choose him. And he’s still waiting.

Hashbrown is a 4-year-old beagle with a big appetite for fun, games, and laughs. Neutered, up to date on all his vaccines, and sizzling with personality, he’s got that perfect combo of goofball energy and beagle charm that keeps us cracking up every time we step into the play yard.
This guy isn’t just a snack—he’s the whole breakfast platter. 🍳 He’s got zoomies for days, a hilarious sense of humor, and enough spirit to fill your mornings with joy. Whether he's making us laugh with his antics or sprinting full speed with a toy in his mouth, Hashbrown is always the life of the brunch party.

(Well, the shelter—but he’s ready to headline a home tour!)

Allow us to introduce you to Mr. Worldwide—our very own four-legged superstar! Just like his namesake, this guy is all about good vibes and living life like a party. 🎶 Mr. Worldwide is around 2 years old, neutered, up to date on all his shots, and ready to steal your heart!

He was found as a stray, wearing a collar and clearly once cared for—but sadly, no one came to reclaim him. 💔 Despite the heartbreak, he hasn’t missed a beat. Mr. Worldwide still believes in love, and he’s holding out for the day his forever family says “I know you want me.”

This goofy, high-energy boy is pure joy on four paws. He LOVES to run, play, and make people smile. Whether he’s zooming around the yard or soaking up affection, he’s always the life of the party. 💃🐶

He’s affectionate, sweet, and so full of life. It’s time he had a new home to call his stage—one where he can drop the mic and finally relax.

She didn’t choose to be caught in a snare trap.
She didn’t choose to lose her leg.
And she certainly didn’t choose to end up in a shelter, overlooked again and again because she’s scared.
But what Cat Cora has chosen — is to keep going.
She gets up every day on three legs.
She explores. She heals. Slowly, she even starts to trust.
Cat Cora may be timid. But she is also brave.

Hashbrown is a fun-loving Beagle who is around 4 years old and has energy for days! This athletic boy is neutered, up to date on all his shots, and ready to find his forever home. He absolutely lives for playtime, especially when he gets to run around outside in the play yard. With his boundless enthusiasm, he needs both physical exercise and mental stimulation to keep him happy and healthy.

Hashbrown would thrive with an owner who understands the Beagle breed and their energy and their curiosity. While he gets along well with other dogs, he’d do best as the only pet in the home, as his playful personality might be a bit overwhelming for some animals. He would be fine with older, responsible children who understand the importance of respecting his boundaries as he settles into his new environment.

If you’re an active person looking for a playful, adventure-loving companion, Hashbrown just might be your perfect match! ??

🚨 LONGEST RESIDENT ALERT: JUNE NEEDS YOU 🚨
Meet June—our sweet, overlooked, incredibly deserving girl who has spent way too much time waiting for a home. 💔
Here’s the hard truth:
🔹 She’s a senior (about 8 years old).
🔹 She’s a pit mix (which, unfairly, makes adoptions harder).
🔹 She’s a black pit mix (one of the most overlooked dogs in shelters).
June has EVERYTHING working against her, but if only people saw what we see—she’s absolutely incredible.
🐾 House-trained? Yep, one of the cleanest dogs at the shelter.
🐾 Athletic? SO much! Don’t let her age fool you—this girl loves to run, play, and explore.
🐾 Adventure-ready? 100%. She’s AMAZING with her harness and lives for her walks.
🐾 The happiest dog? Despite everything, yes. She lights up when she gets outside time with staff, plays in the yard, or gets her treats.
But here’s the heartbreaking part—June thinks the shelter is her home. 😞 She’s been here so long that she doesn’t even know what she’s missing out on. She doesn’t know what it’s like to have a couch to nap on, a family to love her unconditionally, or a warm bed that’s truly hers. She was dumped and forgotten, and we refuse to let her story end here.
She deserves more than a kennel. More than shelter life. More than being overlooked again and again.

👶 A home with older, sturdier kids due to her size
