Cats are precious delicate flowers. 🐱 Sometimes so stubborn they will outright refuse food to prove their point (we still don’t know what a cat’s point is yet).

A cat can start rearing its cute little head to food due to any illness causing nausea (feeling sick) or pain for example. A cat may also eat less if they are dehydrated or constipated. Sudden changes in their diet or stress at home (for example the introduction of a new pet, or a new cat in the neighbourhood) can also put a cat off their food.

If you are certain illness has been ruled out, these tips might just spark that hunger for our precious furry friend. 😸

But please remember, if these methods don’t improve a cat’s appetite, consult a veterinary team as further treatment is likely to be needed.

Meat provides essential protein, crucial for a healthy canine diet. AAFCO recommends at least 18% protein for adult dogs and 22.5% for puppies and lactating females. As a rule of thumb, dogs need about 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day.

🥩 𝗕𝗘𝗘𝗙 𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗦

✅ Pros: Packed with protein, Vitamin B12, iron, zinc, Omega-3, and Omega-6. Organ meats like liver offer extra benefits, including Vitamin A and choline for cognitive health.

❌ Cons: Can be pricey, high in saturated fats, and a common allergen for dogs.

🍗 𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗡 𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗦

We all want the best for our fur babies, and diet plays a huge role in their health and happiness. Recently, the University of Liverpool revisited data on vegan diets for dogs, and the findings might surprise you! 🥗

Previous studies suggested that dogs on a vegan diet were healthier than those on conventional diets. However, the latest research, published in PLOS ONE, offers a more nuanced view.

𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗦

🥦 The association between feeding dogs a vegan diet and owner perceptions of their health is minimal.

🐶 The age of the dog, owner age, education, and breed size were more strongly linked to owner opinions of dog health.

🏥 Veterinary care variables improved the accuracy of these models, but the impact of a vegan diet remained minimal.

🤓 𝗔 𝗗𝗘𝗘𝗣𝗘𝗥 𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞 🤓

The original study, published in April 2022, used an online survey of dog owners to gather information about their dogs' diets, veterinary care, and overall health. It implied that dogs on raw meat or vegan diets fared better than those on conventional diets.

Part of today’s reflection includes recognizing the unique contributions of veteran canines. After their service, many of these dogs continue to support veterans as service animals, offering not just companionship but also significant psychological and physical support.
