For the record, we have only had TWO adoptions THIS YEAR!! TWO. We don't know what we would do without our rescue partners!

With numbers at animal shelters continuing to rise, a local animal shelter is working to ease the strain on its facilities.

FRED is available for adoption! He's a 3 year old, 24 pound beagle mix. He's a sweet boy who likes to talk to us with his "boo woo" hound voice in the mornings. Don't worry, he quiets down after breakfast and we don't hear anything else out of him all day.

His adoption fee is only $40 which includes vaccinations, deworming, microchipping and spay/neuter surgery upon adoption!

We're often asked why we allow Rescue Organizations to pull animals from the shelter versus us offering them for adoption. Well, for lots of reasons!

Our rescue partners are VITAL to our mission of getting animals out of the shelter and into great homes. Last year alone, our rescue partners pulled over 300 animals out of the shelter; animals who otherwise didn't stand much of a chance of adoption, animals who were here for months without any interest, puppies who literally spent their entire lives in a kennel, animals who had medical problems which require costly and lengthy care, nursing mamas and their litters and yes, highly adoptable, high profile animals as well.

Our rescue partners can give our animals a much higher chance of a better future that we, as a small municipal shelter, can give. They have the ability to house longer term which enables the pets to receive veterinary attention, be spayed/neutered and be well socialized. Our rescue partners require applications to adopt, potential homes are screened to ensure that the pet they want will be a good fit for the home. We get too many pets returned to the shelter when the "cute puppy" phase wears off or when, due to lack of training, the pet develops undesirable behaviors or when adopters move and the new residence doesn't allow pets. Adoption applications from rescues force people interested in adopting to really consider their situation and if they are ready for a long term, life-long commitment rather than a spur of the moment, impulse adoption at the shelter.

We do the best we can here at the shelter and we are proud of our facility and the work we do for Burke County, but our success is highly dependent on the rescue groups willing to step in at a moment's notice to take a feline leukemia positive cat into care, or to take a nursing mama and her 8 puppies into foster homes or take a neglect/abuse case and provide months of expensive rehab for that animal. The unwanted, unclaimed, abandoned and seized animals of Burke County are lucky that we have so many rescues willing and able to help.
