Braden Run Animal Hospital

Braden Run Animal Hospital We are a mixed practice serving mostly dogs and cats. We do spays, neuters, vaccines and all your basic needs, as well as advanced medicine and diagnostics

Dr. Anita McMillen decided to open her own practice in Waynesburg PA, because she felt the basic needs of pets weren't being addressed. She felt all folks, from all walks of life, should be offered high quality veterinary care, and be informed about their choices, allowing them to be active participants in their pets' healthcare. She felt and still feels that people shouldn't automatically be ju

dged just based on their income status. Dr. McMillen feels like her pets are family, and thinks a lot of people, rich or poor, feel the same way. Those are the people she is hoping to attract to her practice.

For your pet's safety, Dr. McMillen must authorize EVERY prescription refill. This includes flea and tick medication. To save yourself time and hassle, please call ahead with refill requests. We also close daily from 12-1, so our very small staff can rest, regroup, and grab a bite to eat. That way, we are ready to give it our all in the afternoon. As always, thank you for trusting us with your pet's health. As the only privately owned veterinary hospital in Greene County, your business keeps us in business. :)

I can't stress this enough-it pays to have a relationship with a full service veterinary clinic for your pet! If you are going to a charity organization, or a vaccine clinic for pet care, get ready to get referred elsewhere if you call a clinic who you don't regularly use when your pet is sick or injured. Veterinary clinics are businesses, and need business to stay in business. If you call a clinic for help, it sends out a red flag when you don't have records from another clinic. While we would all love to be able to help every pet in need, it costs money to run a business, and since we aren't charity organizations, we do not get donations or free labor. There are several full service veterinary clinics in our area. If you need charity, of course utilize one, but accept that you will likely be referred to an ER for sick pets, and will spend way more than you saved by not having a relationship with a full service clinic that has regular hours of operation.

We are here at the clinic and open for business! Please don't venture out on bad roads for routine care though! We will gladly reschedule your appointment in inclimate weather!

Keep your livestock warm in this cold weather, by making sure they have plenty of good quality hay, are kept clean, and by making sure they stay hydrated. Monitor water intake, and consider feeding a warm mash instead of dry grain when it's really cold out. Also consider offering warm water to drink several times a day, as cold water can hurt their teeth and decrease drinking. Horses get impacted more often during cold snaps than any other time of the year. Hopefull these tips will help keep your outdoor animals safe and warm this winter.

Rabies is always fatal without early intervention! Please be careful around wildlife, unknown pets, and especially feral cats. Seek medical attention for any bite or scratch from an animal with an unknown vaccination history. Being told the animal is vaccinated or seeing a rabies tag isn't enough! You need to see a rabies certificate, SIGNED by a licensed veterinarian. Otherwise, consider the animal unvaccinated and seek medical attention immediately.

Happy Holidays from the team at Braden Run Animal Hospital! May your days be Merry and Bright! Holidays can be a stressful time for pets. Animals can become stressed and even ill when their routine is disrupted. Add to this, folks sneaking them treats from the boutiful table can lead to vomiting and diarrhea right in the middle of the celebration. Set your pets up for success by asking guests to refrain from giving treats in advance, and by making sure your pets have a safe space to retreat to if the merry making becomes overwhelming. It's up to us to keep our pets safe and healthy during the holidays. If you have any questions, post them here. I'll answer them tomorrow. Thanks again!

Time for our "Ask the Vet" questions for this upcoming Tuesday. Post your questions here, and I'll answer them next week..Please don't limit yourself to dogs and cats. Ask about any species. I'll answer them if I can. If it's an animal I haven't seen as a patient, there are legalities involved, so answers will be generalized, but I'll do my best! Thanks! Dr. McMillen

Look how happy these sled dogs are to be doing what they were bred to do! Tis the season for people to be bringing cute, cuddly puppies and kittens into their homes. Unfortunately, many of these animals end up in a shelter, with their lives forever altered a few months later.
Please do some research before getting a pet. If you get a sled dog and expect it to be happy in a crate, or if you get a kitten and expect it not to scratch the furniture or climb the curtains, you are setting your new pet up for failure. Nothing breaks my heart more, than to hear anger in an owner's voice, or to see the misery in a pet's face, because people expect more from animals than they do themselves.
Before you get an animal with a 12-15 year lifespan, do some research. The internet is full of information.
It could be that a stuffed.animal is the best choics for your kid for Christmas this year.

Did you know that the "heater" you put in your stock tank is actually a de-icer? While it's important to keep water for livestock from freezing, it's often not enough to insure they're drinking. Animals with a bad tooth, or seniors with sensitivy often don't drink enough in winter, and this can lead to constipation, colic, and impaction. Listen to your horse's manure when it hits the ground. If it sounds like a rock slide, their manure is too hard, and they are heading for trouble. You can buy bucket heaters that actually heat water, or you can do like we do, and offer your animals warm water several times a day. You know what they say about an ounce of prevention...

Are ticks partying on your pets this winter? Ask us about Simparica Trio-the product we all use on our dogs. We sell great products like Bravecto for your cats too. BUT, if you can't afford these more expensive products, don't go to a less quality product from Walmart, or the feed store or pet store, or even worse leave your animals unprotected! We can recommend less expensive options to help you protect your furry family members. :)
