Miss Sassie has left the school house!
She is finally back at home with her family after her 3 week board and train course!

We loved every minute of having this spicy little girl here, she is now proficient on loose leash walking, recalling to her name, being comfortable in a kennel, comfortable with handling for all phases of grooming, a potty training schedule and more!
Sassie even got to travel with us to SC to a protection sport dog trial where she got to see a ton of working dogs, lots of people, hear gun fire, can curtains, and a variety of other sites and sounds and she handled them like an absolute champ and was completely unphased.
She has been set up for success to be a well rounded travel companion for her mum!

This video may not look like a lot to most people but for a dog like Carl this is a MASSIVE moment for him. Carl made his way to us on February 23rd, so we are a little over 4 weeks into his training. His owner sent him to us because of his level of anxiety and fear response to what we would consider “normal” every day sights like cars going by, people walking, loud vehicles, men, etc.
When Carl first came we couldn’t even leave the front yard before he would try to drag us back to the house, a place of safety and comfort for him. If anything was different in the environment, trash cans at the corner for trash day or a new vehicle parked in a different spot on the road, he would vibrate and try and retreat back.
While we may not be ready to go into such a hectic space like the construction zone shown in this video, we can now make it a reasonable distance away and just watch. We aren’t willing to rush anything he isn’t ready for, we will continue slowly increasing his threshold over time through May when he is projected to go back to his mum.
We have spent hours on hours just sitting in the front yard “people watching” and letting vehicles pass, taking walks only one or two houses down, and now we have successfully made it a half mile without him panicking at new sights and sounds.
This type of training is NOT a quick process and we can only move as fast as a the dog is willing to, just know it’s possible through patience, time, and consistency! Carl is 100lbs of a big, goofy, loving boy who is now able to start living a “normal” life, we still have a LONG way to go but this is huge progress for him and we couldn’t be happier to be on this journey with him.

On today’s first training sessions of the day:

Miss. Sassie recieved a grooming session! How is this training you may ask?
It is vital to properly expose and desensitize dogs to all phases of grooming. You want them to be comfortable in the bath, versus panicked and fighting to get away due to an aversion to water, the tub, certain handling techniques, etc! To incude comfortability being blow dried, and having their nails clipped or dremeled. It not only creates a positive association for your pup but also sets either you or your future groomers up for success. Less stress is best!
For Sassie we started with clipping her nails, she recieved a break in between each paw being completed. We moved to the bathing phase and a quick towel dry with treats to reward her calm behavior. During the blow dry we stopped every few minutes and engaged her in play to keep it fun and relieve stress! Slow is smooth and smooth is fast!

For handsome Draco we worked on handler engagement with distraction in the distance!

In our neighborhood there is a ton of construction going on with new builds so we used this as a prime opportunity to work around that. We were approximately 150 meters away, but we could still hear the noises off in the distance. Draco struggles with having aversion and reactivity towards close moving vehicles and loud noises. Today we have been focusing on handler engagement and luring into the sit and down with these organic distractions in the distance and work our way up using success of approximation during his time with us.
Draco’s owners also expressed importance to him being able to loose leash walk next to a stroller so we did a short session with that as well 😄

Draco is a handsome 5 month old Belgian Malinois and is here for our 3 week Board and Train program to work on basic obedience, loose leash walking, reactivity and resource guarding behaviors.

We are here to set him up for success and build a strong foundation that his family can build upon as he gets older!

Miss. Sassie is our smallest client dog to date!
We’ve trained many small dogs in the past but she tops the charts at a whopping 2 pounds 😅

Sassie is a 12 week old Yorkie and is here with us for the next 3 weeks for our puppy course! We will be promoting positive potty and kennel habits, leash walking, foundations of obedience, and introducing her to different surfaces and sounds!

✨Introducing our newest trainer Kayla!✨
Kayla has 10 years of experience in the dog industry and 8 years of experience training dogs in a variety of venues.

With Kayla being in the St. Louis area this also offers us the availability to expand our service area!

A bit about Kayla:

Hi! My name is Kayla Hurst!
I have been working in the dog industry since 2015, when I got home from basic training. I started working in dog kennels, taking care of clients’ pets while they were away on vacation and I quickly learned that dogs were my passion! I started studying dog behaviors and body language, and following many well known trainers online. I started applying the training I was learning from others into my personal dogs.
In 2017 I was hired by a company as a professional trainer! I learned so much during my time there and grew on how to better help people train their dogs. I learned that teaching people to grow with their pets is something I love doing.
Since then I have been training pet dogs, service dogs, and sport dogs!
I have 3 dogs of my own, my oldest dog is Louis who is a 9 year old pit mix. A 4 year old Dutch shepherd, Wally and a 1 year old German shepherd, Chaos. Wally and Chaos are working dogs and we train for PSA (Protection Sport Association). Wally is in the level 1’s and Chaos will be stepping on the field this spring!
If I’m not training my dogs, client dogs or at work, I’m hanging out with my 5 year old son who loves to help me with training too!

I’m so excited for this new chapter in partnering up with Flat Collar K9, I have learned so much from Madelyn already and being able to work alongside my friend is going to be so much fun!

I look forward to helping future clients!

Good Afternoon! My name is Titan! I am a 5 year old German Shepherd. I am currently available for adoption through our Train-to-Adopt program! I know sit, down, stay, heel and am house trained! I walk well on a leash but do require a strong leader to be my forever parent! I’m a big fan of fetch and love going for daily walks or hike! I am kennel trained but much prefer to roam the house and relax after my daily exercise! I would prefer a home with no other dogs but can remain neutral around dogs on walks or outside of the home. I am also neutral with cats!

Mr. Pork Chop, a 1 year old Boxer, just completed his 3 week board and train with us this past week!
This energizer bunny came to us ready to drag you down the road and knock you to the ground when greeting you 🤣 to add he had some dog reactivity that also needed to be addressed.
Pork Chop is a new dog now and is behaved and ready to work! Thank you Britney Zarcone for trusting us with the little beasty boy! 🖤

Once again Simply Soul Photography has outdone herself 🖤

One of our amazing puppy clients made hats for all the children of our Pan!c At The Disco litter and the first puppies fly the coop this weekend! We are so blessed to have amazing clients, we absolutely cannot wait to watch them on their journeys together!

For some reason my phone won’t allow me access to my camera roll BUT, none the less,
Official Volhard Testing evaluations were conducted today and final puppy picks on our Pan!c At The Disco Litter have been made!

The children had their first outdoor adventure today, the weathers been way too cold up until now, but we have nice weather the next 2-3 days so we will be taking advantage of that!

Levitan got to meet them for the first time, he’s a better mom than any female I’ve bred 🤣
