This was 2 weeks ago…Eleanor had died a couple hours earlier, and I was struggling. I needed to sit and ground myself in the earth for a few minutes.

We didn’t know this would be Toby’s last walk to the barn 😭. He was totally normal. He loved the cows, and gravitated toward them when they were close to the fence.

We miss him so much.

There are 2 pigs underneath all that straw, I promise!

Sylvie and Indie went to bed hours earlier than normal, as the temperature started to plummet. I had to add a bale of straw to cover them so they’ll be nice and cozy all night.

This is why your donations are so important…to give our residents the comfort they deserve and desire. We aren’t fancy here, but we make sure they have what they need with your help.

We have raised just under $600 today so far, thanks to your generosity. Thank you so much! It all adds up, and it all goes directly to the animals. We’re so grateful ❤️

When a formerly feral cat chooses you…I can’t even describe the feeling. My heart almost couldn’t take it. This happened this morning, and it was the first time Oliver has climbed all the way into my lap and curled up. He stayed there for 45 minutes, and he would’ve stayed longer but I had to get back to work.

Oliver is one of those who will benefit from the winter straw fundraiser. Because he and Timmy haven’t been able to get along (it’s a seriously unsafe situation for Timmy when they’re together), he has to remain outside with Twyla. I don’t think he’d be happy as a fully indoor cat anyway; he likes his freedom, though he does stay close. He and Twyla have several warm beds on the porch and in the garage, but they also have 2 enclosed shelters full of straw to keep them warm if they prefer.

Thank you for considering us on ! We appreciate you ❤️

It’s ! We know you work hard for your money, and times have been difficult lately. The non-profit sector has felt it, too. There are so many worthy causes, and we know it’s hard to choose where to donate any extra funds you might have set aside.

We are raising money toward our winter straw and hay in order to keep bellies full and keep everyone warm and comfortable in the cold months.

If you’ve ever smiled at a video of the pigs being their goofy selves, or a picture of Charlie tossing hay in the air, please consider donating a bale of hay ($12) or straw ($9.50). Or any amount! We’re so very thankful and appreciative of any donations we receive. We love our supporters! You make a difference ❤️

If you’re not in a position to donate, please consider sharing our posts to help us reach more people 🙏

❤️Ritchie and Astrid❤️

These two survivors are doing amazing! If you don’t know much about the evils of cockfighting, please take time to read even a little about it. We all know it’s horrible, but the details are truly sickening. Nobody of any species should be used for profit or entertainment, but these birds, especially the roosters, endure such trauma.

Look at Ritchie’s head feathers…they look so cute, like he spiked his hair, but do you know why? The fighters in these situations have their combs, along with their wattles and spurs, sliced off without pain meds. If Ritchie still had his comb, we would barely notice his cute head feathers…but it was taken by humans. We don’t know what else he saw or heard or had to suffer through, but he survived and were glad he’s here with his lady friend.

Ritchie dotes on Astrid, but he also defers to her when the human is in with them. He’s still nervous and unsure how much he can trust people. He watches my every move with wide eyes. He’s curious, but cautious. But can you blame him?

Thank you for helping us provide safety to those who need it. We can’t help or save them all, but the ones we do bring here know they’re loved by us and all who see them for the deserving beings they are.

We’re on day 3 of below-freezing temps and the pigs are enjoying a snack of pumpkin oatmeal, steamed squash, greens and fruit ❤️

As you can see, the little pigs are a bit more civilized when it comes to dining!

Thank you for your outpouring of love over the passing of Toby. He was so special, and the sanctuary feels empty without him here. It’s been a week since we said goodbye and it still hurts, but all of his friends and fans from around the world are helping us carry our grief.

If you don’t know Toby’s story: Toby was homeless with his previous caregiver, living in their car for an unknown amount of time. He had clearly not had enough food in a long while, and had also lacked the basic vet care he desperately needed. His person surrendered him to a high-k!ll shelter, and Toby was labeled “rescue only” due to his medical needs.

We had just said goodbye to Roxy, our 15 year old pit mix. Exactly an hour afterwards, I opened social media and found we’d been tagged in a courtesy post about Toby by Of course we had said we weren’t ready for another dog right away…but Toby was staring into my soul and I couldn’t turn away. We couldn’t say no to someone who desperately needed help, and we had a space for him. Scroll to the last picture to see what he looked like in the shelter 😭

Toby flourished here, and even though he had quite a few medical issues, our vets helped us manage them beautifully so he could live his best life. He gained over 30 pounds, we got his eye and skin issues and later his arthritis under control, and he helped us follow a strict schedule for walks, feedings, and bedtime for 2 1/2 years. We hope his friend, Pete (the black and white dog) was waiting to greet him at the rainbow bridge 🌈

So many people have asked about Oliver. He seems to be doing ok, although he isn’t going on many walks with me anymore. He definitely misses his buddy but he’s so intuitive, we’re sure he understands on some level.

Thank you for being here. Thank you for loving him - and ALL of our residents - alongside us. Thank you for donating and commenting and sharing. And thank you for lifting us up when we feel low in times like this. We truly couldn’t do this work without you. We’re so thankful for all of you 🧡

I’m so sorry for our recent absence. The past couple days have been heartbreaking and soul crushing. On Wednesday, we lost Eleanor. It wasn’t completely out of the blue because she had been sick, but it was still a difficult day.

Yesterday, Toby was fine at breakfast but wouldn’t get up for our morning walk. I thought he was possibly having more joint pain, but by afternoon it was clear something else was going on. X-rays showed a mass that was bleeding into his abdomen and putting pressure on his organs. Thankfully we were able to get an after-hours home euthanasia appointment so he could pass comfortably in his bed.

I will say more about them once we’ve had some time to heal - we’ve lost so many friends this year, but 2 back-to-back is very difficult to process.

Thank you for loving them with us 💚

Today has been a bad day…our Patreon supporters know what I’m talking about. BUT, this is how I’m ending my outside work tonight - with Twyla asking for head scratches! She’s been letting me pet her for very short amounts of time for the past few days, but this is the first time she requested contact, and clearly wanted more when I stopped.

And listen to her purrs…my heart is bursting 💕

They don’t care that I was up late chopping up a pumpkin for THEM, or that I didn’t get much sleep because Toby wouldn’t stop barking…late breakfasts will not be tolerated.

But once they’ve eaten, all is forgiven…until I’m late with their snack 😏

Ritchie and Astrid are getting more comfortable! They spend a lot of time in their coop “redecorating” so we need more enrichment in their run, but they are getting less afraid of me when I’m in the run with them. They still don’t want to be close to me, but they like when I bring them new treats to try so maybe it won’t be long until they take some from my hand 🤞Today they tried blueberries for the first time 💙. I’m staying with them for longer periods each day, sitting quietly and letting them figure me out.

ICYMI: Ritchie and Astrid arrived 10 days ago from the site of a cockfighting investigation in PA. We don’t know their whole story, but we do know they likely never knew kindness from humans until June of this year when rescuers stepped in. We will make posts about them individually soon.
