Vitamin E and Your Horse. 🐴
🟢Is your horse getting enough Vitamin E? What is so important about Vitamin E?

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that helps with many functions in the body including supporting cell membranes against oxidative damage and providing immune support.

🟢How much Vitamin E do horses need?
The NRC (National Research Council’s Nutrient Requirements of Horses) recommends that the average 1,100lb horse in no work consumes at least 500 IU of Vitamin E daily, and a horse in light work should receive 800 IU/daily. Horses in harder work, older horses, horses with specific health issues or those breeding may require more. Many equine nutritionists will recommend a minimum of 1,000 IU/daily as a good starting point. Horses in harder work, those that are pregnant or lactating or horses with health issues may need levels of 5,000+ IU/day . The only way to determine your horse’s ideal supplementation level of vitamin E is through blood testing as some horses may require higher doses of supplementation than others.

Recommended Testing: Baseline Vitamin E Level
A blood serum test performed by your vet once or twice yearly helps to determine if your horse is Vitamin E deficient or consuming more than they need.

🟢How do horses get more Vitamin E?
While fresh quality pasture is a great source of Vitamin E, pasture access isn't always an option for horses. Hay (especially as it ages) is not a good source of receiving adequate levels, which is why it is important to feed a quality fortified horse feed or ration balancer to add important nutrients including Vitamin E into the diet. If a blood serum test indicates that your horse needs more Vitamin E, quality supplements on the market exist.
