Good information to know if you live in one of the states listed below and are having a horse hauled to you!

Wow, how are we in December already?

The current EHV-1 reported case total associated with the Waco, TX outbreak is 46, 33 of which are the EHM/neurologic form. Affected states at this time include Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, South Dakota, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Washington state. There are not reported numbers of mortalities to present.

There have been additional reports of EHM in MD (11/18) and PA (11/27) that are not associated with the Waco, TX outbreak. This is 𝐧𝐨𝐭 an abnormal pattern for this disease, as spontaneous outbreaks are known to happen, especially if there is a gathering of younger horses for an event, sale, etc.

Though many western performance events have either been cancelled or rescheduled, it continues to be important to practice good biosecurity and monitoring while traveling and at home. Additionally, it is important to remember that any horse can contract and/or spread Equine Herpesvirus 1 - it is not limited to barrel horses. Horses that have been at events or are traveling should have their temperature monitored at least twice daily (morning and evening) and have their own sets of equipment, buckets, etc. - refer back to our recent post on biosecurity for more tips on how to avoid infectious disease spread.

At any rate, as the outbreak situation continues to develop, transport recommendations have been evolving state by state. Not all states with positive cases have travel restrictions. Current travel recommendations and restrictions:

𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐝𝐚 (𝟏𝟏/𝟏𝟗 - 𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝)
- Entry permits required until January 1, 2026
- 21 day rule applies (has not been at a premise where a confirmed case of EHV-1 has been in the last 21 days)
- Health Certificates/CVI’s are valid for 30 days from date of issuance, though it needs to be sent with supporting documentation to obtain an entry permit
- Supplemental statements required on CVIs

𝐀𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐨𝐧𝐚 (𝟏𝟏/𝟐𝟏 - 𝐮𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝)
- Health Certificates/CVIs for horses coming from a state with a confirmed case of EHV-1 (TX, OK, LA, SD, CO, NM, AZ, WA) in the last 30 days are only valid for 5 days
- Non-positive origin states: 30 day health certificates accepted
- Supplemental statements required on CVIs
- The department may have/will contact you if you were at an affected event

𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐚 (𝟏𝟏/𝟐𝟏 - 𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝)
- CVIs/health certificates must be issued no earlier than 72 hours prior to travel in MT
- Horses potentially exposed to EHV-1 within 14 days of inspection are not eligible for import/travel into MT
- Horses displaying clinical signs of EHV-1 or EHM are not eligible for import/travel into MT

𝐎𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐧 (𝟏𝟏/𝟏𝟗 - 𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝)
- No current restrictions, but event producers need to register their event with the OR Dept. of Ag. 20 days prior to event, collect records of attendees and horses present and have a designated isolation area available at events. There also needs to be a listed veterinarian of record for events (they don’t need to be present at the event, but available if questions/sick horses arise).

𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐚 (𝟏𝟏/𝟐𝟓 - 𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝)
- No current restrictions, but horses returning from exposed events/facilities are recommended to be isolated for 21 days with twice daily temperature monitoring and increased biosecurity.
- The department may have/will contact you if you were at an affected event.

𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐨 - 𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝
- Supplemental statements required on CVIs/health certificates
- No current restrictions

𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚/𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 - 𝐧𝐞𝐰
- The World Equestrian Center cancelled several events
- ALL horses (including those arriving from within the state of FL) arriving at the World Equestrian Center will be required to have a 14 day health certificate/CVI - those without proper paperwork will be denied entry.

𝐎𝐤𝐥𝐚𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐚
- Supplemental statements required on health certificates/CVI (21 day rule)

The majority of states are not accepting 6-month passports (Extended Equine Certificates of Veterinary Inspection/EECVI) at this time. Shorter term health certificates (Certificate of Veterinary Inspection/CVI) are still being accepted and can be issued by your veterinarian for travel. If you are traveling, you and your veterinarian should contact the destination state department of agriculture/state veterinarian for the most current regulations. Additional states may require supplemental statements on CVIs/health certificates - it is recommended to contact the destination state when traveling to find out the most current regulations.

The recent outbreak of EHV has raised considerable concern within the horse community, and rightfully so. We want to be clear, transparent, and proactive about our biosecurity measures for the next several weeks so all customers and clients can have peace of my mind when it comes to our horses. Our decisions are made with one priority in mind: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀.

𝙀𝙁𝙁𝙀𝘾𝙏𝙄𝙑𝙀 𝙄𝙈𝙈𝙀𝘿𝙄𝘼𝙏𝙀𝙇𝙔:

• 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝘀𝘁. This is as a precaution since the disease can be transmitted through contaminated clothing or boots. In the meantime, we are more than happy to FaceTime you or provide uncut, raw video clips showing anything you’d like to see of the horse you’re interested in. Once appointments resume no outside tack will be allowed, and we ask all visitors to take their own biosecurity measures (clean clothes/hands/boots/etc.).

• 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘂𝘁-𝗼𝗳-𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀: Many of the haulers we typically use are temporarily suspending transportation for the next few weeks. Because of this, any sale horse purchased from us will be allowed to stay here free of charge until safe transport can be arranged. Health Certificates are still being written in the State of Texas. They are requiring healths to be written same day as the horse is leaving. They are not issuing healths for any horse that has been where a positive EHV case has been until after a required quarantine period (does not apply to our horses). States along a horse’s route may also have their own protocols in place requiring the horse to cross their state’s border within a certain time frame of receiving the health or other health documentation requirements. This will have to be checked on by the veterinarian writing the Health Certificate.

Our horses’ wellbeing is, and always has been, our top priority. That will not change. Please keep all affected horses, families, and programs in your thoughts and prayers. We encourage everyone to put strong biosecurity practices in place for their own herds, and we truly appreciate your understanding as we navigate this together.

The key thing to remember in all of this is that if WE do our part, WE as a community CAN help slow the spread and prevent further loss.

Ozzy is a 4yr old, 14.3hh, sooty buckskin Gypsy cross gelding with the kind of presence that grabs your attention from the start. If his good looks don’t get ya hooked, his personality and rideability definitely will. From the arena to the trails, this gelding has you covered and would be an exceptional prospect to show in all ranch versatility classes or under english tack.

Ozzy has been ridden through state parks, used on overnight camping trips, and used for basic ranch work making circles and gathering. He’s traveled through multiple trail courses and handled every obstacle with ease — water, bridges, logs, brush, you name it. He also handles new environments confidently, taking everything in stride. Ozzy goes through water easily and is steady around activity and commotion. We have shot fi****ms around him and he handled it extremely well. He also handles vehicle traffic and makes a gorgeous flag horse, carrying himself with confidence and style. In the arena, Ozzy is a fun and fancy ride. He has a light handle, bridles up well, is started on flying lead changes, and will absolutely drag his hind end when asked to stop. He’s been used as a turnback horse and will really cow up to one. He’s also been ridden English and took to it like a duck to water, showing just how versatile he wants to be. Ozzy is very fluid and smooth in all gaits, making him a comfortable and enjoyable horse to ride for long stretches.

He absolutely adores kids and is patient and kind with them. He’s great with pesky dogs and other farm animals/livestock, and he loads, unloads, and hauls like a pro. Ozzy is easy to get along with on the ground for all. He has always been a gentleman for grooming, stands quietly to be saddled, and takes a bit easily. Ozzy can go barefoot with no issues and has been barefoot with us, but he will have a full set of shoes on at the sale — simply our personal preference when going to sales.
