𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲!🥶

With this big cold front blowing in, here’s a few things to remember with your horse…

🌾𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁! Horses eat on average 2% of their body weight in forage already (1,000lbs = 20lbs) and will increase their consumption by 1% when cold (extra 10lbs for 1,000lbs horse). The required digestible energy (DE) intake for a healthy, adult horse to maintain its weight, on top of the average forage amount they consume day to day, will increase by 2.5% per degree below 5°F and a yearling's DE will increase 1.3% per degree below 12°F. Don’t be scared to throw an extra flake or two to your horse this week or allow them to have free choice hay. They’ll generate more internal warmth while digesting it and won't lose a ton of calories from trying to keep warm without the increase in forage.
💧𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻, 𝘂𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗼𝘇𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿! Horses can dehydrate easily in cold weather so be sure your water troughs and buckets are clean and make sure to break the ice frequently if you don’t have a trough heater. Horses are also less likely to drink cold water so consider boiling a pot or two of water to add to their buckets and troughs periodically. You may also want to leave out some loose salt and minerals or administer some electrolytes to help keep your horse drinking as well.
🌡️𝗛𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲, however wind and precipitation play a big factor into this. Check under your horse’s armpit to see how warm they truly are to help figure out how heavy to blanket them if you choose to do so.
👀𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲 ➜ Shivering, cold ears and extremities, tucked up posture, lack of movement, changes in behavior, and of course if they’re cold under their blanket. If your horse begins to exhibit any of these behaviors, try your best to slowly warm them up; offering a warm mash mix is a great way to get them some calories and warm them up from the inside out.
🦵🏼𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲, be sure to pay attention to how they’re getting around. Normal joints are surrounded by synovial fluid, which helps to lubricate and protect the joint. When the temperature drops, synovial fluid thickens, leading to less protection, pain, and stiffness. In addition, horses that are already arthritic will suffer from heightened aggravation of the joint, as well as inflammation and pain. Keeping the joints lubricated and keeping horses warm and moving is very important.

Bundle up when you go outside, cover your faucets, drain your hoses, and we’ll get through this cold snap without a hitch! Happy winter weather season!❄️

2025 marks these two half-siblings start into the big horse world of getting started slowly but surely! We've had them awhile, but have (a little selfishly) been hiding them out because how often do you find champagne draft crosses?! We're excited to see what they become over the next few years and who knows, maybe one day one of them can be yours!

Peanut Butter is a 2021 draft cross mare that we’ve owned since she was a weanling. Although we did start her and she took to riding without a hitch, we purchased her for the sole intention to be our broodmare. HS Pocos Slim Shady is a 6yr old, AQHA registered gelding that we had originally planned to offer as our Christmas horse as he’s a complete unicorn type, but as most of you know he had to have kissing spine surgery. We’re on the road with 𝑺𝒉𝒂𝒅𝒚 heading to Dr. Honnas in Bryan, TX so Shady can be checked in for his kissing spine surgery that is scheduled for tomorrow!

The first video for 𝙎𝙝𝙖𝙙𝙮’𝙨 𝙆𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙎𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙅𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙮 mini series is up and ready to be viewed. In this video we give a little background information on Shady, what threw up red flags to us, what was found on his x-ray, and the expected timeline for recovery.

If an unknowing person saw this filly’s mouth, they’d assume she had sustained trauma to her face and her teeth were messed up as the result.
𝗛𝗢𝗪𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥…
Did you know young horses loose their teeth the same way children do? At 2.5 the central incisors are pushed out, at 3.5 the intermediate incisors are shed, at 4.5 the corner incisors are shed, and by the age of 5 your horse will have a full set of 36 to 44 permanent adult teeth.

Lenas Spotted Cowgirl is a 2022 ApHC filly that we’ve had since she a weanling and is currently shedding those baby teeth of hers! Maybe Santa will be nice and use some magic to let her have a pretty smile again by Christmas😉

We lost an irreplaceable one last night. She was Alex’s only horse for nearly a decade and Stetson’s “unihorn”. Emmie was one that no amount of money could buy and no amount of time with her was long enough, but I’m thankful for the time we did have with her. She’s probably wondering where her long, pretty tail and a piece of her mane is today in heaven. She always had what I was told were “fairy knots” in her mane. When a fairy found their ideal horse, they’d twist the horse’s mane into stirrups and reins. Only one on the place that would get knots like this quite literally everyday. She truly was a fairy tale type of mare that we’ll miss forever.

“The best horses in Heaven they have no tail. This is a rule they all know without fail. For when a new horse arrives with a short cut bob, they all know that this horse did a very good job. His owner could not bear to part with her friend so she saved his tail, wrapped in ribbons and in braids, to hold with his memory in a very loving way. To enter Heaven without a tail is an honor, a message, that without fail announces to everyone, far and wide that this horse was more than a wonderful ride.”

“Hey Sarah! Hope you’ve been well. I feel like I want to text you every week to tell you how much I love this horse, haha! He is so much fun and is EVERYTHING we had hoped for! There isn’t anything I’ve introduced him to or done with him that he hasn’t excelled at. I swear nothing bothers him (tarps, flags, umbrellas, balls, ponying other horses, closed spaces, bridges, barking dogs, bike riders, streets with loud cars honking 🤦🏼‍♀️, landscapers with loud equipment, construction sites, little kids touching his face…I could go on and on). I had a biker come up from behind me on a trail the other day (usually they’re smarter and more courteous) and Tico hardly flinched when the guy came flying by us.

I ride him ba****ck around the neighborhood some evenings with just his halter and lead rope and he does great! He moves so well off leg pressure.

Our vet, dentist, and farrier all love him. They’ve all commented on his chill, fun demeanor and how well mannered he is at such a young age (I actually gave our vet your info. It would be awesome if she ends up getting a horse from you).

Anyway, so thankful that you matched us up with such an amazing horse! We’re very grateful 💕”

Completely sound, no maintenance required, no previous injuries, and goes barefoot with no problems! Not to mention, the bone on this guy is comparable to some draft crosses’ bone.
