Winter Egg-spectations: Why Are Your Hens Laying Fewer Eggs? 🥚❄️

Factors that Affect Egg Production:
🔆 Lighting – Once the day length starts to drop below 12-14 hours per day, chickens will often have a natural drop in egg production.
🌡️ Temperature – In cold weather, hens use nutrients to stay warm, reducing resources for egg-laying.
🐔 Age – By their third winter, hens may show a significant decline in egg production.

Tips to Keep Your Flock Happy & Productive:
💡 Add lighting –Use timers or manually control lights to provide 14-18 hours of light per day. (Or let them rest naturally!)
🏠 Winterize the coop – Properly winterize your coop and ensure proper nutrition!
🐥 Add young birds – Consider adding new, young birds to your flock, and research breeds best for egg-laying!

🌾 Recovery Opportunities for Farmers 🌾

The USDA offers two key programs to help agricultural producers recover from disasters. The deadline to apply is Jan. 30.

Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees & Farm-raised Fish: Provides financial help for losses not covered by other programs, including feed, hay, and grazing losses. Socially disadvantaged, limited resource, beginning, or veteran farmers/ranchers receive 90% of the payment rate. Apply at your local Farm Service Agency center. More info: ELAP.

Tree Assistance Program: Helps nursery owners, orchardists, and vineyards replant or rehabilitate trees, bushes, shrubs, and vines damaged or lost in a disaster. Apply at your local USDA Service Center. More info: Tree Assistance Program.
