Prepare your horse for this winter storm with these helpful tips!

Water- offer extra water to your horse to make sure their gut remains hydrated. First, make sure your water sources are defrosted at least 2-3 times a day by providing a hole for your horse to drink from. Sometimes keeping plastic balls in the tub or bucket can keep them from freezing as quickly. We recommend offering a bucket of warm water to every horse 1-2 times per day. To encourage them to drink, you can add a handful of feed or hay pellets, Gatorade, or molasses to a bucket of warm water.

Feeding- make sure your horse has access to hay at all times. The act of eating and digesting hay keeps your horse warm. If you feed grain or pellets, add a tablespoon of table salt or a scoop of electrolytes to their daily feeding to increase their water intake.

Look for signs that your horse is not handling the cold- most horses with a thick winter coat, free access to hay, and a shelter from the wind and precipitation, do very well in severe cold, even when it is less than 20 degrees. If the snow is collecting on their back and rump but not melting, this is a good sign they are doing an adequate job keeping their heat in. Call your vet if you see anything abnormal including but not limited to laying down when it is not usual for them to do so, not eating or drinking normally, standing off from the rest of the herd, flank watching, shivering or looking lethargic.

Stay safe and warm!

🦷 Dental Health Reminder 🦷
Does your pet have stinky breath?? Dental health is SO important in our patients but we often find it’s something we push to the back burner until there’s a big problem! Stinky breath is one of the first signs that your pet may need a dental…At your annual exam your vet will take a look at your pets teeth and might recommend doing that dental (sometimes sooner rather than later!)
Here’s a great example of what a dental could do for your pet- every dental is a Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment, including X-rays to make sure those roots are just as healthy as the part of the teeth we can see!
February will be our next dental month and it’s already filling up so don’t forget to schedule your appointment to get your pets teeth assessed!

Our Story

We are excited to offer care for not only for cats and dogs but also horses, goats and farm animals (including cows and pigs)! At Appalachian Animal Hospital, we are dedicated to providing the best care possible for your entire animal family. When you visit our newly constructed clinic in Weaverville, it feels like visiting friends. We strive to make your pets feel comfortable and safe while receiving complete and compassionate care. Stop in for a healthy treat for your pet and get a tour of the place – we always have time to stop and make new friends and catch up with our old ones. With many years of combined experience, our veterinarians are dedicated to providing the highest quality of care for your pets in our hospital. You may have heard of us before – we have been in the area for well over 30 years taking care of animals in the comfort of their own homes. In February of 2017 we opened the doors to our custom-built animal hospital, where we also offer boarding, daycare and haul-in services for horses and other farm animals. From sick or injured animals to those needing routine dental care or surgeries, we are here to provide for all of your pets’ healthcare needs. For our equine and farm animal clients, we have 3 mobile units on the road providing the same excellent quality care your horses have enjoyed for years. We also care for small ruminants, camelids, and cattle on your farm or at the office (if they can fit through the door!).

Feel free to send us a message here on FaceBook, email us or call the office during business hours. We hope to be able to help and take care of your loved animal companions!
