I mean, it's sad when hives don't make it through the winter. But what you can learn by deconstructing a huge colony, literally frozen in time, is really something cool. This time, my dad helped me all afternoon. A guy who really doesn't care for stinging insects and is allergic, nonetheless. Today I took down 4 hives, two were incredibly large. Each had passed for a different reason. It's all part of beekeeping.
This used to make me really sad. But you have to shift your mind to the surviving hives. SHIFT. YOUR. MIND. The thing is the hives we have coming out of winter, are also huge and strong... hell, a few were scoping me out today in 35 degree weather! We'll take a loss to have stronger stock. As it always is with a honeybee democracy, do what's good for the whole.

"Washboarding" is the term #beekeepers use when honeybees make the washboarding motion on the side of their hive box. Also, male honeybees, or drones, are all kicked out in the fall so a winter hive is all female honeybees.

Winter girls! This hive is one of 3 splits we took from a saskatraz colony last year. Prior to that we only had southern mutts, Michigan mutts, our own overwintered stock, Italian/whatnot in our bee yards. So the queen could be any mix of any of the above.
We always focus on our stronger hives for the better of the whole and these ladies are doing great!

Fellow beekeepers, have you ever fed an entire honey super mid-winter? Our girls always have fondant starting in January but this is our first time feeding honey frames before the last frost.
I realized we had extra capped frames in the garage. It was 52 today and slightly rainy when I went. Hey! Why not? We love strong hives coming out of the winter, so can't hurt, right?

🌻This is a normal bi-weekly inspection of one of our largest hives. This particular colony has about 60,000 bees in it. In the summer, each medium 10- frame box will hold 10k honeybees in a healthy colony. This hive is incredibly gentle and laid back. We've been blessed with nice queens this year!
