South Jersey Horse Rescue

South Jersey Horse Rescue Abandoned, abused, and neglected equines of all types find refuge at South Jersey Horse Rescue. We he Most of the horses that come to us have been traumatized.

South Jersey Horse Rescue is a rescue and rehabilitation facility for all breeds of equines. When new rescues arrive, we carefully evaluate each one to identify its needs and make sure it gets the healing, love, and care it requires to bring it back to health and happiness. Sometimes they are so afraid that it takes time for them to understand that they are finally safe, and they need to learn to

trust humans again. Volunteers may just sit in the field with a horse for hours at a time, eventually drawing them into gentle, playful interaction. We build a bridge of trust, which leads to understanding and cooperation. Once they are happy and confident, we can assess their abilities and give them whatever training they may require so we can carefully match them with the right new home. We do have some permanent residents, but strive to adopt out as many animals as possible to loving forever homes.

KEEP your pet. There most likely is NOT a better home out there.
Reality— Owner surrenders are the FIRST euthanized for space. Strays get a “stray hold”.

Cross ties can be cruel to horses because they can cause stress, panic, and injury:
Pressure
Cross ties put pressure on both sides of a horse's face, making it difficult for them to move forward or backward. This can cause a horse to become frightened and fight the pressure, which can lead to them rearing up and falling over.
Lack of mobility
Cross ties prevent horses from moving their necks freely or finding their own stop. This can cause stress to build up inside the horse.
High risk of injury
If a horse pulls back and snaps a cross tie, the flying tie can cause injury.
Lack of a clear path to relief
Horses learn and understand by seeking relief from pressure, pain, or stress. Cross ties don't provide a clear path for a horse to find relief.

Our Story

South Jersey Horse Rescue is a rescue and rehabilitation facility for all breeds of equines, from the largest draft horses to the smallest minis. When new rescues arrive, we carefully evaluate each one to identify its needs and make sure it gets the healing, love, and care it requires to bring it back to health and happiness. Most of the horses, donkeys, and mules that come to us have been traumatized. Sometimes they are so afraid that it takes time for them to understand that they are finally safe, and they need to learn to trust humans again. We strive to adopt out as many horses as possible to loving forever homes, but offer a lifetime sanctuary to those with special needs.

South Jersey Horse Rescue is staffed entirely by volunteers! We are not funded by the government, all funds necessary for our operation (veterinary services, hoof and dental care, utilities, hay, specialized feeds and medications, repair & maintenance of facilities, etc.) come from private donations, horse sponsorships, Artwork sales, and fundraisers. If you’d like to learn more about us, including how to donate, adopt, or volunteer, you can visit our website at www.southjerseyhorserescue.com .

We are now featuring the beautiful work of our director, Ellen Strack, in our new Fine Art America shop! These drawings and paintings of a few of our SJHR residents are available as fine art prints in a range of sizes, as well as on greeting cards, phone cases, and a variety of other products. Every purchase helps provide feed, medical care, dental care, supplements, and other day-to-day needs of the horses at SJHR.
