About Haus des Bergschatten

Mike and Seleta Nothnagel moved to the small town of Wellington, Colorado in the summer of 2014 after having grown up in Southwest Missouri their whole lives. Though both of them grew up with dogs most of their lives, apartment life in Missouri left them without a K9 companion for a few years. After moving into their house, they soon decided it was time to fill the hole in their heart with a dog. Not just any dog though...they wanted a dog that would be protective, sociable, intelligent, healthy with excellent genetics, and beautiful too. Their diligent research led them to the Old Fashioned German Shepherd Dog and in November 2016 they brought home Menard’s Legendary Rubezahl of Menards Legendary German Shepherds in Omaha, NE. In July 2017 they brought home Ardent Haus’s Wilhelmina des Bergschatten of Marshalltown, IA. Mike and Seleta had fallen head over heels for these beautiful, intelligent, and powerful dogs and the goal of improving and bringing back the Old Fashioned German Shepherd.

The kennel name, Haus des Bergschatten, is translated from the German language to mean House of the Mountain Shadow; in Dutch, the word bergschatten means “mountain treasures”. We have truly found that Old Fashioned German Shepherds are treasures, and we just happen to be lucky enough to develop and love the breed in the shadows of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado! Though we are relatively new to the breeding of these magnificent dogs, Seleta has over 10 years of experience in the field of veterinary medicine, dog training, and working with rescue organizations. As such, we believe strongly in practicing responsible breeding! This means Haus des Bergschatten pledges to:

  • Screen breeding dogs for heritable diseases and remove affected animals from the breeding program. Affected animals will be spayed or neutered and may be placed as pets as long as health issues are disclosed to buyers/adopters.

  • Have working knowledge of genetics and generally avoid inbreeding.
