It is with a heavy heart that all of us at Kulak Equestrian mourn the tragic loss of Ace of Spades.
Every minute of every day we do our very best to keep our horses happy, comfortable and above all, safe. Sadly, there are times when that simply isn't enough.
My heart aches, especially for Emerson who has worked so hard to develop her partnership with Ace. Emersonโ€™s talent, commitment and dedication were continuing to pay real dividends. Ace was an exceptional race horse and the Hover family left no stone unturned while helping he and Emerson achieve success in multiple sport horse disciplines!
It is virtually impossible to articulate our feelings behind this tragedy and I am essentially at a loss for words and reasons why.
However, I am not at a loss for love, support, and a path forward for Emerson, her family, and all of us at team Kulak.๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿฆ„โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

It was a great weekend at the Millbrook Horse Trials!
As usual, they had an extraordinary turnout of top horses and riders in every division. It's one of the few events in the country that hosts nearly all the levels of Eventing.
All three phases at Millbrook are very high-end and the cross country terrain presents a true and demanding challenge at all levels.
Kulak equestrian enjoyed the highly successful weekend with all 6 horses.
Marcia, riding Pantheon & Dark Humour placed first and second respectively.
Miriam Evans riding a new partner, Zuko Enjoyed a wire to wire win in a very competitive Beginner Novice. Miriam has had to work extremely hard to develop a partnership with Zuko.
Her commitment and work ethic is beginning to pay rewarding dividends.
Emerson Hover and Ace of Spades had a smooth and lovely performance in all three phases for a fifth place finish. Emerson has worked hard all winter with Ace to develop him to the next level. She is looking forward to a trip out to the Kentucky AEC's in August. Emerson's hard work all through Florida, combining riding and intense high school classes, are certainly paying off.
Alexandra Naja and Alana Pollard had some up-and-downs with many takeaways to help prepare them for GMHAโ€™s Festival of Eventing and the American Eventing championships.
Along with all the riding and coaching, I was honored to do a live commentary at the sponsor tent during the advanced division cross country. Sara Kozumplik Joined me to help entertain and educate an exceptional group of our sportโ€™s supporters!
A huge shout out to Louise Meryman along with her team, officials, course designers, staff and volunteers. This event is an enormous undertaking and you all knocked it out of the park!

It is nearly impossible to comprehend that a year has passed since a tragic riding accident took the life of our beloved Wayne Barr. It has been a long, emotional, and at times incredibly painful road for all of us here at Kulak Equestrian.

For me personally it has presented so many challenges that one could never prepare for, and while it's difficult to even imagine a silver lining, I have always tried to live on the positive side of things. Whatever deck you are dealt hopefully God can give you the strength to work through it.
For us, the silver linings are Wayne's two beloved horses, Copenhagen TF (Karl) and Pacco!
Without question I know that Wayne would want me to be sure that Pacco and Karl landed in the best possible situations.
That goal weighed heavily on me for 9 months.

After extraordinary efforts from our entire team, and with guidance from Canadian Olympic show Jumper Erynn Ballard, Ilan Ferder purchased Pacco. He is now showing in the highly capable hands of Michael Delfiandra.

Wayneโ€™s precious Karl has landed in heaven on earth. He now has a permanent home with team Kulak.
From the bottom of Wayne's and my heart, I would like to thank our dear friend and long-time client Carol Cone for stepping up and purchasing Karl...
She knew firsthand that Wayne loved this horse like a son and by the grace of God, Karl is a perfect partner for her.
It is a blessing on many fronts for him to remain here with us.

It is comforting to know that Wayne is keeping a watchful eye from heaven on our team, complete with his incredible little horse Karl leading the way! ๐Ÿฆ„๐Ÿฆ„๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ’•

A heartfelt thank you to all of my incredible personal and professional equestrian friends who have supported me through this tragedy.
My mom, Mrs. K who has seen me through the thickest and thinnest of my career, along with my family, staff, exceptional clients, our farriers, and veterinarians. Everyone whose valuable contributions make our program successful!

Huge congratulations to Jack Brennan and Paladin (Dan) on their big win at the Rocking Horse horse trials in Florida this past weekend! They won the Jr. Beginner Novice division on the incredible score of 23.2! Amazingly that was also the lowest finishing score in the country last weekend! That includes every level from beginner novice through the 4*! What an incredible achievement!

Paladin was purchased by Michelle Chester Kulak's family as a four-year-old and produced by Michelle and Marcia. We enjoyed great success with Dan and are thrilled that Jack has experienced the same with this very special horse. Jack, his mom Laura and their team have done an exceptional job keeping Dan up and running at the age of 19.

These are Some great photos of the boys from last weekend and coincidentally, some photos of Marcia competing in the 2* at the very same event in 2014!

Keep an eye out on the USEA page as Jack and Paladin will be featured on April 10th!

We wish the all the college eventing teams the best of luck at the USEA Intercollegiate and Interscholastic Eventing championships to be held at Stable View in Aiken, South Carolina on May 4th & 5th

It's going to be a banner weekend for all the competitors as Stable View and the community are pulling out all the stops to host a fantastic competition for these college athletes and their horses.

Everyone here at team Kulak will be rooting for Jack and Dan along with the entire Auburn University team! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿฆ„๐Ÿ†

While all the above is incredibly rewarding, the most heartwarming aspect is that the team surrounding Paladin is well aware that he is in the twilight of his career. They have already established a plan for a well earned retirement!

Our winter season here in Wellington has truly been a three sport endeavor!

We have 10 horses in training and six competing between WEF, Global Dressage, and Eventing up in the Ocala area! While very busy, our incredible team runs like a well oiled machine. A special thank you to Briana, Emily, Jenna, Hayley, Amanda, Jordy, Abel and his crew for all your contributions to our success!

We have enjoyed visits from numerous family members (Annie, Pete, John, Joey, Dan, Nancy, Molly, Curtis, Rodeo and Peter) and friends from all over the country. Thank you to all for taking the time to visit our wonderful oasis here in Wellington. It It was especially nice for Mrs. K to have so many lovely visitors! Our beloved Dr. Carol Vischer took time away from her busy schedule to get some R&R in the sun with us and her dear friend Gitza! She also spent time with US Olympic team, and our winter veterinarian Dr. Tim Ober. So nice for Carol to get out of the northeast mud and winter muck, rest, enjoy the sun and get some valuable time sharing knowledge with Dr. Tim!

We have enjoyed numerous young riders who have come for a weekend or longer to gain valuable exposure at the highest level of sport.

Miriam Evans was able to be with us for 2 weeks and as always worked incredibly hard. She was blessed with the opportunity to compete Wayne Barr's beloved Copenhagen TF (Karl), have numerous lessons with me as well as our dressage trainer Ruth Poulsen. Miriam exemplifies where hard work and determination can take a young lady! Madi Cruise came all the way from Ames, Iowa to experience an eye popping weekend in Wellington. Emerson Hover and her ever improving horse, Ace of Spades, have had the good fortune of spending the entire winter season with us. The improvement in their partnership and performance has been nothing short of remarkable. Emerson balanced her riding with an enormous commitment at school here as well. The opportunity to compete WEF, be submersed in dressage training and ride numerous highly trained horses has helped helped blossom both her riding and horsemanship. She will have had the good fortune to finish the winter season at the world class TerraNova Horse Trials.

I am deeply indebted to all of my exceptional Owners and their Horses that they have entrusted our team with. Gloria Callen, Carol Cone, Mary K Shaughnessy, Eileen Yarbrough, Robin Pauli, Thomas & Spencer Barr, Carrie St Clair and Lisa & Nate Hover. You all take exceptional care of our staff in so many ways while we work hard to give you & your horse's our very best. Your kindness, dedication and commitment to our team is what makes every day special!

As we close out the next six weeks here in Florida, I want to give special thanks to my mom for her love, support and incredible hard hard work. She continues to set the standard for all of us!

Happy Easter & may God bless us all for safe travels and a healthy, successful summer ahead! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฆ„๐Ÿ’•

Wellington was once again the educational capital of the equestrian world last week.

We were treated to a masterclass given by arguably the most decorated dressage rider/trainer in the world, Isabell Werth.

Hosted by Helgstrand Dressage, Isabell shared her system of adhering to the basics with every horse at every level. Her disciplined, methodical and positive approach is exceptional. The payback is enormous, utilizing these tools to help our horses & riders at all levels and in our case at Kulak Equestrian, multiple disciplines!

Correct dressage work helps to bring out the best and develop a safe, solid partnership for every horse and rider! Here is a great article that gives you a snippet of what she presented! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿฆ„

Itโ€™s not a secret that Iโ€™m a total Isabell Werthโ€™s fan and I had the chance to watch her one more time in a free Masterclass at the beautiful Windsome Farm of Helgstrand Dressage USA in Wellington, Florida, on 29 January 2024.

One of the most valuable aspects of being at the top end of the sport in Wellington are the educational opportunities at every corner. Be it training with top riders, competing at WEF or Global Dressage or simply watching the best in the world in the warm-up arena.

In this case, EnviroEquine and Pet and Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation hosting a biosecurity informational. We can never be too careful with the ever increasing health concerns of our horses who travel and compete around the country.

I am deeply grateful for the continued support and superior products that EnviroEquine and Pet contribute to our exceptional program here at Kulak Equestrian.

The US Equestrian teams gold medal journey to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, France began this past weekend in Wellington.

Victory in Versailles was an incredible benefit. Hosted by Five Rings Farm in a dazzling setting. Complete with top riders from all disciplines, trainers, owners and our sports most dedicated and generous supporters. The live auction generated a lot of excitement and raised a significant sum of money to help get our teams to Paris.

The highlight of the evening was the magnificent concert by none other than Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa. Indeed a night to remember for all of us!

Team USA is well on its way to the podium in every discipline at the Paris Olympic Games this summer!

Special thanks to Bonnie Jenkins and her entire team at the USET Foundation Inc. who helped produce this memorable evening! ๐Ÿฅ‡๐Ÿ†๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

When faced with extraordinary challenges in life, seeking pathways to help get yourself back on track is obviously vital. However, that's easier said than done.

For me personally, there were times when basically nothing helped me see the light at the end of the tunnel. Fortunately, I found solace in my day-to-day connection with incredible Horses, family, dear friends, and God's music. This Lauren Daigle song is one of my favorites! ๐Ÿคฒ๐Ÿ™โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

10/30/2023

Here at Kulak Equestrian, providing quality forage for our equine athletes is a high priority. With winter looming around the corner, it is a good time to evaluate your horse's feeding program.

Quality forage is a critical element in keeping your horses happy and healthy. It helps to maintain proper weight, minimize ulcers, and keep horses naturally occupied. This summer, farmers were particularly challenged by very wet weather. As a result, hay production was at an all-time low quantity, and often quality suffered too.

Fortunately, you can always rely on the superior line of forages from Triple Crown Feed! Our staples are their Premium Grass Forage, a mix of orchard and timothy hay, highly palatable and suitable for all horses and ponies. My absolute favorite is the Stress Free forage is a mix of grass and alfalfa, along with cutting-edge ingredients to help maintain the microbiome and minimize potential ulcer issues.

This is particularly valuable for horses during the winter who are often confined for extended periods of time due to poor weather and limited turnout. It is critical to take a minute and evaluate your winter feeding program to be sure your horses are consistently getting quality forage and access to plenty of fresh and clean water to help maintain a healthy weight and minimize the risk of colic.

Head over to https://www.triplecrownfeed.com/ for more information about their extensive line of superior quality feed and forages! ๐Ÿฆ„๐Ÿ’™

Huge congratulations to USA Eventing's first all-female Pan American Eventing team.

They're holding down the gold medal position following the Dressage phase at the Santiago 2023 Pan-American games in Santiago, Chile.

This team is comprised of an incredible group of young riders as well as seasoned veterans. I am especially thrilled for my two dear friends, Sharon White and Caroline Martin Pamukcu along with Liz Halliday and Sydney Conley Elliott. Kulak Equestrians wishes them great success for the rest of the weekend.

I know that Sharon's longtime mentor, trainer, and trusted friend, Jimmy Wofford is keeping a close eye and wearing a huge smile down from Heaven. Sharon is a prime example that hard work, grit, tenacity, and overcoming impossible odds will get you to where she is today!

Needless to say, we had our work cut out for us this summer, in more ways than we could have ever anticipated. I am especially grateful to my family, staff, and clients who have helped us all forge ahead under very challenging circumstances. That being said, we have hardly been idle!

It was great for the entire eventing community to have the Millbrook Horse Trials back on the calendar. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Boyd Martin and Allison Springer Eventing for taking my riders under their wing while I was attending Wayne's funeral services.

Congratulations to Jack Brennan and Paladin who won their Beginner Novice division. Hot on their heels in third place was Alana Pollard and her new mount Redfield Milky Way. Alley Naja and Who Can Charm had a career-best score and a fourth-place finish in a very competitive professional Novice division. I am also very grateful to Sara Kozumplik Equestrian for doing a beautiful job taking over my commentary duties in the sponsor tent on cross-country day.

We've had a busy and successful August & September which included the Area 1 championships in Geneseo, Larkin Hill Horse Trials, Town Hill Farm LLC, and The GMHA Festival of Eventing. We were well represented at the 2023 American Eventing Championships held in Lexington, KY. Susan Gallagher and HH Rockstar enjoyed a stellar performance in the training championships, winning the division from start to finish. One of the few to complete on their dressage score! Laura Tilbury "Tills" and Captain Jack had the experience of a lifetime competing in the Beginner Novice championships. Jack Brennan and Paladin finished third in a hotly contested Beginner Novice division. Jack is now enjoying his freshman year at Auburn University. He and Paladin will be an enormous asset to the Auburn eventing team!

Congratulations to Alley Naja's team at Trilogy Equestrian Center, LLC. It has been so rewarding to support, guide, and train such a great group. Alley, Emerson Hover, Alana Pollard, Gia Forlano, and Parker Holmes! You have all worked so hard and made incredible progress!

As we wind down this summer and begin preparing for our annual migration back to Florida, I give a heartfelt thank you to my entire crew: Mrs. K, Annie, Pete, Miriam, Nikkole, Pam, Lauren, Caroline, and Bele for helping to keep entire organization ticking over!

I am also deeply grateful for my sponsors, who, for so many years have continued to support our team through thick and thin and help us maintain a high level of success over the years! Triple Crown Feed, Schleese Saddlery Service, EnviroEquine and Pet, and William Micklem Bridles! Thank you for all your exceptional products, cutting-edge technology, and above all, your loyalty and friendship!

A life well lived, takes many twists and turns. Sadly, tragedy is often part of that, as many have experienced firsthand.

Reflecting back 22 years ago to 9/11/2001 is the harsh reality that nearly 3,000 people lost their lives, and the ripple effect of that attack that is immensely exponential, even today.

Team Kulak is grateful to do what we love with horses, in the most lucrative country in the world. However, many have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we can enjoy the freedoms that come with living in America!

Once again, count your blessings every day because life truly does hang by a thread and 9/11 is another bleak reminder of just that! โค๏ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Reflecting on the last few weeks is like an out of body experience. Trying to compartmentalize the tragic loss of our dear Wayne has been an enormous challenge.

Our entire team is deeply grateful for the extraordinary support, love, and kindness that has poured in from so many. A heartfelt thank you to all.

The services for Wayne were beautiful and at the same time heart wrenching. However, they also represent the first step of healing. His sonโ€™s Tom and Spencer have marched forward with incredible courage. We are all in unchartered waters. Nonetheless, I know Wayne would want us all to begin to move forward to the next chapter in our lives.

We feel Wayneโ€™s presence everyday and our mission is to simply keep his incredible qualities alive and well.

07/27/2023

Every day the equestrian life we lead is a gift from God and a very fragile commodity at that. We experienced it first hand with the tragic passing of our dear friend Wayne Barr while competing at the Saratoga Horse Show on July 22.

We all accept the inherent risk of swinging a leg over the back of a horse, but rarely do we think of the potential for the gravest consequence.

Wayne has been a long time friend of mine who grew up riding Welsh ponies for Mollie Butler in Ithaca, New York. He continued to ride when time allowed throughout his adult life. After many years of hard work and extraordinary business success, he fulfilled his lifelong dream of getting back into horses 3 years ago. Wayne could have ridden with any professional and I am honored that he chose our team. He was a dedicated, exceptional student and a very good athlete who was totally immersed in our program. He patiently committed to investing in quality horses and traveled from his home in North Carolina or wherever he happen to be working around the country to train and show regularly. Wayne always came to the barn with a beautiful smile and an arm full of goodies for all the staff, which quickly endeared him to the entire Kulak Equestrian family. He always extended a special hand and care to Mrs. K and made sure to include her in everything we did. Wayne made our world a better place with his kind, intelligent an exceptionally generous nature.

I can honestly say this is going to be a very difficult journey forward for me personally. Hopefully Wayne left behind an ample supply of his strength and courage for all of us to draw upon. His wonderful sons Thomas and Spencer, his immediate and extended families will need every bit of it to forge ahead.

A heartfelt thank you to the extraordinary outpouring of support that we have received. It has certainly helped soften the sting of this enormous loss.

Thank you all and may you count your blessings every day for the special people in your life because as we have experienced, it can all change in the blink of God's eyes.

To Wayne, I will continue to cherish the memories of our adventures and will keep your beloved horses Copenhagen TF (Karl) and Pacco teed up under your watchful eye down from heaven.๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿฆ„๐Ÿ’•

Kulak Equestrian is happy to support Larkin Hill and Green Mountain Horse Association in helping their recovery efforts from the flooding rains we have experienced in the last three weeks! I encourage everyone to give their time or a few dollars to help support these great event facilities in a time of unprecedented weather conditions!

It's critical for all of us in the equestrian and eventing world to support our organizers and their teams through thick and thin. We all have felt the reduction in AREA 1 USEA competitions. It is up to us to play a vital roll in their long term sustainability! Please do everything you can to contribute time or donations to help support the remaining events on the calendar! It was a privilege to sit down and talk eventing on the latest episode of The Jon and Rick Show, a podcast hosted by creators, Jon Holling and Rick Wallace.

They cover a wide variety of topics related to eventing and horsemanship featuring top riders, coaches, officials, and course designers, and are willing to discuss many of the serious issues affecting all equestrian sport.

Jon and Rick are both very accomplished riders, trainers, coaches and now, media stars and are using their platform to educate equestrian enthusiast and promote the sport of eventing! What's most impressive is that Jon, Rick, and I have all been successful at the 5* level, but more importantly, we recognize that through governance and committee work, we can have an equally important role in these challenging times to help guide the future of equestrian sport.
