- understanding the neck🐴
It’s commonly not the first area considered when diagnosing a lameness or injury, but the equine neck is a crucial part to the overall health and wellness of your horse. With increasing frequency, the neck is being diagnosed as the root of common lameness, soreness, and performance issues.

“The neck is composed of seven cervical vertebrae running from the head to the thorax, named C1 through C7, and each articulating with each other. The primary purposes of the neck are to move the head and to protect and transport the spinal cord and nerves, which run through the middle of the vertebrae.”

↪If you suspect your horse may be suffering from undiagnosed issues in the neck, reach out to us to learn more about our advanced imaging systems and diagnostic abilities.

Who doesn’t love a little ❓

When a top mount of Tina Irwin’s took an unexpected tumble, what was originally brushed off quickly became a more serious issue. After being admitted to Palm Beach Equine Clinic, “Feine” was diagnosed with Acute Kidney Injury.

💬 “When I performed the ultrasound, I saw that the horse had a hematoma on the pole of the kidney on the side that he fell. My other tests revealed that the horse was in acute renal failure, further supporting the finding on ultrasound,” explained Dr. Fernando Marqués. “In sports medicine, we commonly talk about tendons, joints, and muscles, and sometimes we forget that horses have internal organs that can also fail. Just because you cannot see it doesn’t mean that everything is fine.”

↪️Thanks to the swift action of the Irwin and PBEC teams, Feine made a full recovery, but the event served as a good reminder that sometimes issues are more than surface deep! 🔬

Today’s topic is Regenerative Medicine!🩺 In this three-part series, we’ll discuss some of the latest and greatest therapies utilizing regenerative medicine to provide the best diagnostic and maintenance care.

▪️Part 1: PRP, otherwise known as Platelet Rich Plasma, utilizes the platelets that are among the first cells to accumulate at an injury site and are crucial in stimulating the repair process.
The process: veterinarians at PBEC will take a sample of the horse’s blood and concentrate the platelets in a high-speed centrifuge, the platelet-rich sample is then injected back into the horse to stimulate specified tissue to heal at an increased rate.

Help your horse breathe easy this weekend by knowing the signs and symptoms of respiratory disease! Firstly, make yourself familiar with the three common respiratory issues:

▪️Equine Asthma aka “heaves” - equine asthma is treatable through a combination of nebulized medications, nebulized steams, oral medications, or injections. These methods serve to quiet the inflammatory response much like how an inhaler helps relieve a human with asthma problems.

▪️Acute Infections - Viral cases of respiratory disease include flu and Rhinopneumonitis, or rhino, caused by one of two types of equine herpesviruses: EHV-1 and EHV-4. Isolation is key when it comes to infectious diseases affecting the respiratory system.

▪️Shipping Fever - shipping fever is an infection that takes advantage of a horse’s stress while traveling and the resulting compromised immune system.

📱If you’re worried your horse is showing symptoms of a respiratory issue, reach out to PBEC today at 561-793-1599 to learn more about their internal medicine
Capabilities.

"The contribution of each energy system and fuel source (carbohydrates, fats, and to a lesser extent proteins) varies depending on factors such as exercise intensity and duration, training status, muscle fiber composition, and oxygen supply to the muscles. Understanding these factors is crucial, as exercise is generally categorized into aerobic/endurance (low intensity over a long duration) and power/strength (high intensity over a short duration). In practice, pure endurance or pure strength activities are rare, and most sports combine elements of both." - Dr. Fernando Marqués of Palm Beach Equine Clinic

Keeping an eagle eye on foals in their first weeks of life is not only fun, but close monitoring can also be lifesaving, as U.S. FEI dressage rider Lauren Knopp discovered in July 2024. Luckily, quick action from Knopp, her home veterinarian, her repro vet, and the team at Palm Beach Equine Center in Wellington, FL, all came together to bring about a positive outcome.

Knopp noticed that something wasn’t quite right when her two-month-old Hanoverian foal-at-foot P**f started having diarrhea. As soon as P**f exhibited neurological symptoms, Knopp's vet Dr. Erin Newkirk immediately rushed P**f and mom Dakota to the clinic where the clinician in charge of her care, Dr. Chunco, and her team were waiting. P**f was diagnosed with central neurologic dysfunction of the brain due to low blood sodium and other electrolyte derangements due to fluid losses.

Originally from Virginia, Mackenzie Harmon completed her undergraduate degree at Lynn University in Boca Raton, FL, in May of 2023. Later that year, she joined the Palm Beach Equine Clinic (PBEC) team as a veterinary technician for Dr. Tyler Davis.

What is your background with horses?

I have a big background with horses. My dad bought a farm in 2007, got a few horses, and had my sister and I start riding. I was seven at the time, and I’ve been riding ever since. I always took every opportunity I could to watch and learn as much as I could, whether that was from a vet, a farrier, or a barn manager. In 2020, I worked as a barn manager for a few weeks and really enjoyed that.

When and why did you decide you wanted to become a vet tech?

When I finished school, I was torn between going to nursing school and being an ER nurse, a scrub nurse in the OR, or becoming a vet. I looked for a job as a nurse for months and was unsuccessful, so I decided to apply to an equine hospital and see if I would get a position. When I got the job at the equine clinic, I figured it would help me decide whether I loved working with animals and wanted to become a vet, or if I hated it and wanted to become a nurse.

Palm Beach Equine Clinic was honored to participate in this year's Opportunities in Equine Practice Seminar this past weekend. Over 300 veterinary students from across the United States and Canada gathered in Lexington, KY, for a weekend of lectures and hands-on wet labs.
Dr. Richard Wheeler and Dr. Chris Elliott dedicated a day to instructing students in distal limb orthopedic ultrasound during the wet labs, while Dr. Janet Greenfield spent a day sharing both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in veterinary acupuncture. This event provided a valuable opportunity to engage with and educate the next generation of equine veterinary professionals!

08/29/2024

Many U.S. states and provinces in Eastern Canada are seeing cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile Virus (WNV) this year. Palm Beach Equine Clinic urges horse owners to make sure their horses are up to date on vaccinations and boosters, especially if you are in a high-risk area due to mosquito populations, traveling out of state, or have cases nearby.

According to the Equine Disease Communication Center, “Horses residing in regions with a year-round mosquito presence may need EEE vaccinations two to three times annually for full protection. Horse owners should check with their veterinarians to determine the needed vaccination.”

EEE and WNV can be fatal in unvaccinated horses. EEE and WNV are considered “core vaccines” by the American Association of Equine Practitioners. The AAEP recommends that ALL horses be vaccinated for EEE and WNV annually, preferably in the spring before mosquito season. Initial vaccination is followed in four to six weeks with a booster; yearly revaccination is recommended after. More information on vaccines can be found on the AAEP website.

Other tips to limit and prevent infection include the use of insect repellents frequently, keep horses in at night, eliminate or minimize standing water, eliminate brush piles, gutters, old tires, and litter, and remove all equipment in which water can collect.

If your horse needs vaccinations or boosters and Palm Beach Equine Clinic can help, call us today at 561-793-1599.
