We often ask owners if we can say hello to their dogs. But how often do we ask the dogs? After owning a dog that didn't particularly like people, I learned to not only ask the owner, but also to wait and see if the dog approached me as well.

Waiting to see if the dog wants to come over is a sign of great respect for their needs. Maybe they just want to sniff you and back away, and that's okay. Maybe they try to bowl you over with love and are desperate for cuddles. And that's okay too. Giving a dog the choice is hard for us ( we just want to pet all the dogs!), but knowing when to do that lowers anxiety, increases safety and cuts down on bad reactions.
