Appleatchee Riders Association

Appleatchee Riders Association Appleatchee is a Private Riding Club and Boarding Facility located in Wenatchee, WA. Horsemanship clinics to improve members' skills are held regularly.

Appleatchee Riders Association is a private membership organization incorporated in 1947 in Washington State for the purpose of promoting fellowship among horse lovers. Activities sponsored to support this goal include performance shows, dressage, hunter/jumper events, schooling shows, gaming events (timed events), reining, team sorting, extreme trail course and team roping events. The Association

also sponsors 4-H clubs, two WAHSET teams (Washington High School Equestrian Team), a Pony Club, a therapeutic riding program and other programs. Competitive events include both members and non-members. Non-members pay a premium to participate in Association sponsored events. The Association has made extensive investments in physical facilities that include both indoor and outdoor arenas, barns for stabling members' horses, camping facilities and orchard property. The goal of the Association is to be self supporting financially. A twelve member Board of Trustees manage the Association's daily operations and assets.

Hello everyone!
When I took on the Appleatchee Riders Association page in 2020, I had no idea how much fun I would have sharing the day-to-day happenings with you all! Over the last 4 years, we’ve seen historical snowstorms, members banding together to help keep an eye on sick horses or to help other members with paddock maintenance, so many competitions, endless learning, celebrations, fires that came a little too close for comfort, perfect spring days, work parties, members trying new things, old friends reunited, new partnerships, and so much more! Our Instagram was created, and our pages have nearly doubled their followers! I know we’ll continue to see all sorts of ups and downs; after all, we have horses. But one thing I know we will always see is our ARA family showing up for each other and our visitors continuing to enjoy the wonderfully unique place that is Appleatchee.
As many of you know, I have been managing our social media from several states away for several months now and the time has come for me to hand it off so our page can continue to keep you as up-to-date as possible on all things Appleatchee. The ARA board will manage our social media going forward, so stay tuned for updates on our 2025 season!
It has been an absolute privilege to keep you all up to date on everything Appleatchee,
Breanna (Howell) Stuart

A variety of equines call Appleatchee home, including some of the adoptable horses from Cowgirl Spirit Rescue Ranch! CSRR and their volunteers are ARA members who use the facilities and division practices to help evaluate horses and ensure they'll be going to the perfect forever home!
Part of our stall renter's responsibilities is to maintain the integrity of the stalls and paddocks, and one of the ways we do that is by putting mats in the stalls.
"Special thanks to CSRR board member Holly L and volunteer Olivia H, for helping fix our rescue stalls at Appleatchee Riders Association. One stall needed leveling and new stall mats put down, while the other needed leveling and the old mats put back down." -CSRR head Juliane H

As the cold winter weather trudges on, Dr. Sarah Reuss, AAEP Vice President and a horse owner herself, shares the following advice to keep your horse safe during extreme weather.

1. While lots of hay is ideal for horses to eat to keep warm, now is NOT the time to introduce a round bale if they’ve never had access to one before. It may be more work, but keep throwing them their normal hay source, just more frequently.

2. Similarly, if your horse is not used to being in a stall, now is NOT the time. The stress of a major change and the decreased activity can be risk factors for colic. Be sure they have access to shelter, hay, and drinkable water but let them move around if they choose to do so.

3. Horses that are thin, older, or fully body clipped are those most at risk in extreme weather.

4. Well-fitting blankets are great but be sure that horses do not get sweaty under them, or that the blankets don’t soak through if snow or rain covered. Wet, cold and covered is worse that dry, cold and naked.

5. Some of the highest risk times are when the temperatures hover right around freezing, as that can result in sleet/freezing rain/ice that can make horses wet and therefore colder. Slippery footing is a concern, too.

6. If using electric water heaters, be sure they are functioning and not shocking horses. Take your gloves off and stick your hand in the water (briefly!!!) to double check.

7. Entice your horses to consume extra water by flavoring a bucket, adding electrolytes to their meals, or soaking their meals in warm water. If you’ve never fed beet pulp before, be sure to add LOTS of warm water. Dry beet pulp is a common source of choke.

8. The tips of your horses' ears can be at risk for frostbite. Putting on a waterproof, jumper-style ear bonnet or other waterproof ear cover can protect them from wind chills.

If you have any questions or concerns about keeping your horses safe this winter, contact your veterinarian for advice.
