Testimonial: Constant Barking to Quiet Calm
From the 2018 archive: These two dogs used to turn inside out whenever anyone went past their owners' downtown Rockport home, which is often if you know the area. Remote collar training with Dog Coach changed everything for Charlie and Lucy, even Pedro the small guy. Here are the owners giving a little peek into how things have changed. No need to listen to constant barking or complaints from the neighbors anymore!

When Mugsy started our Remote Collar program last fall, he couldn’t be around new people or dogs. Anything strange or new sent him into a tizzy - barking, growling, jumping. Totally reactive to anything new.
He was good at home in his own backyard and knew basic obedience. But they wanted to take him camping and hiking, to be part of their family, and to be a reliable off-leash dog.
Anyone who’s worked a reactive dog will tell you how much it takes. Mugsy’s family was dedicated to having a better dog. They changed his diet, learned how to be leaders, and to teach Mugsy to make better choices. Through their hard work, he’s now able to be off-leash and play with other dogs.

When it’s work time, we work. When it’s playtime, we play. Play is an important part of training and there are many lessons during playtime. It’s important for your dog to understand what is playtime and what is work time. By clearly delineating play from work, we add structure and show our dog what we expect.
Tips to keep the times separate:
- Pick up toys in the house between play sessions
- Encourage play at specific times
- Close out play time with a break in the crate
- Have a marker word that signals playtime is over, like “all done”
- You decide when it’s playtime, not your dog

Edie the Wonder Dog was wonderful at out of control behavior. It’s true, she did actually bust that many screens and TVs!
After our Remote Collar Program she’s calm, cool, and collected with all of her family members being able to enjoy her. It’s truly a pleasure to be able to help families like Edie’s!
If you’re ready to make big changes with your dog, head to our website to read through the programs and fill out a form.

The Structured Walk is foundational to all our training. A continuous conversation through leash work helps your dog overcome distractions and stay focused on your confident leadership. As a result of the structure and clear expectations, the walk is more comfortable for you and your dog.
Here’s Remy demonstrating the walk he’s learned after working with us through Team Puppy and Foundation Training.

Walking the walk is the dream many dog owners have. We teach dog-handling skills that make it possible. By raising your expectations of good behavior and consistently practicing, walking your dog can become more enjoyable for your whole family. First, train your dog to be calm, then let the kids walk the dog, drink coffee and walk your dog, have your dog trot beside the stroller or bike - the possibilities are endless.

The ultimate! Letting your dog lie out and sniff the breeze. Calm controlled behavior takes work and management. ☀️
It’s hard work doing nothing, I think we can attest to that! Sunday home doing nothing?? Always something on the mind. But the more we practice, the stronger we get. The same goes for dogs.

Managing interactions with new dogs relies on our ability to read the dogs’ body language. By anticipating their next move, we can avoid possible negative interactions.
Repeated negative interactions make us apprehensive and in turn, can make our dog nervous. Never feel obligated to let your dog play with another dog. You are his advocate. The old adage “they’ll figure it out on their own” is one of the worst and most dangerous phrases.

Bath time is a training opportunity and you never know when you’ll really need it. The goal is to make it as enjoyable as possible—for you and your dog. Use a leash and collar to start and leave plenty of time. Either tether your dog or have an extra set of hands. Don’t push it all at once, like crate time, your dog will build stamina. If it’s a huge struggle, just do his paws.
This is the before video. Nel takes baths begrudgingly but without a tether. You’re working toward a zen bath time—even if it isn’t the favorite, sometimes it is absolutely necessary 😂😂😂
Remember Olive who we shared practicing 'place' this winter? When she started with us, we took a little video of her very first arrival with her owner George.
Since this video, George and Olive have learned a lot. Stay tuned for the "after" video!

If you’re trying to play fetch with a squeaky ball, your dog may take a minute to give up the ball. The squeak of a ball can mimic the squeak of prey – a mouse, squirrel, rabbit… Getting that “prey” ball from your dog may be that much more challenging. Try one that doesn’t squeak!

Lee and Chloe rocked Place with crate work at the Wenham Training Barn!
"Place" and "crate" are two commands basic to all of our programs. Both help your dog learn to be in a deep state of calm. It takes time and dedication, but the more calm we expect for our dogs, the easier becomes to manage new, sudden, or intense circumstances.
Escape the sleety, gray March blues with a throwback: Charlie and Westley loved playing in our last snowstorm. Like play during the summer, playing in the snow requires managing your dog. Even dogs that live together need you to step in and call the shots!
After one hour of work with Sarah, the boisterous Olive settled down into her first session. And after two sessions, she and her owner George have quite the command of 'place'!
Consistency and dedication are key to successfully training your dog. Some of the most exuberant dogs settle right down when they arrive at Dog Coach see that their owner means business. Stay tuned for more updates and tag us in your progress videos!
Food Work!
The hardest part, walking past plates with food. One of the most important things you can teach your dog, Ignore the food.
Because when you learn how to teach your dog to let the food go, then he can listen even better in many situations. He begins to trust you. And you learn to trust yourself, that you can say No in a kind way, and mean it.
So many dogs die from eating things that can't be digested. And so many owners spend $$ to save their dog.
Start now, invest in training your dog to leave the food or anything alone.
Yes, it can be a smooth transition.
What you won't see, is the work the owner will be putting in at home.
Short walks, so there are less distractions. More crate time so that he's not out chewing on the furniture and woodwork and getting time to rest.
Yes, big guys like this need rest. They need a walk, but it is important that it's a productive walk and nobody is getting their back out!
Dogs love to learn! Get ready for 2022 with a New Year's resolution to have a great dog!
