Home for the holidays ❤️

Two weeks ago, dear clients of ours brought in this handsome older lab that they found wandering the neighborhood. We scanned him for a microchip and…lo and behold he was chipped! We held our breath as we looked up the chip provider via the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Microchip Registry, and found it registered with HomeAgain PetRescuer. They provided us with the owner’s contact information and within minutes she was in our office, reunited with her pup! This entire ordeal took no longer than an hour, thanks to his registered microchip.

As we approach the New Years celebration, keep your pet’s safety in mind. All it takes is an open gate, or a door that didn’t shut fast enough even with the most attentive pet owner. Make sure to keep your microchip information up to date, and that even a tag or rabies license can mean you’ll be just a phone call away should your furry friend flee under your nose.

We thank these clients for taking action, and to his owner for being responsible about her pet’s safety! We appreciate AAHA and HomeAgain for being available resources that help keep pets with their families.

As we anticipate the oncoming effects of Hurricane Milton, here are some last minute pet preparedness tips in the event that you have to emergency evacuate:

1. Make sure your pet’s microchip information is up to date if they have one. Keep your pet’s collar and any ID tags on them at all times until the weather hazards have subsided.

2. Locate your pet’s most recent vaccine records, especially for rabies. Most lodging accommodations will require them.
Pro tip: If your vet uses Otto Flow (we do!), you can view your pet’s vaccine reminders and export them as a PDF at any time via their Pet ID Card in the app.

4. Keep any crates and leashes on standby along with a to-go bag with your pet’s food, any medications, p*e pads etc. and be sure to keep it off the floor and away from windows. For cats, a cardboard box lined with a trash bag works as an impromptu to-go litter box.

While we pray that no one will need to flee during the storm, we also hope that this information will be helpful to anyone that needs it. Keep in mind that most if not all emergency veterinary offices will be closed in the affected areas until the storm passes. Stay safe and hold your furry family close!
