West Baton Rouge Parish Shelter and Animal Control

West Baton Rouge Parish Shelter and Animal Control WBRP Shelter & Animal Control is a department of the WBR Parish Council.

Our mission is to enrich the quality of life for people and pets in our community through education, outreach, code enforcement, disease prevention, adoptions, and rescue/transports. West Baton Rouge Parish Shelter and Animal Control is a department of West Baton Rouge Parish Council. As an Animal Control department, we are tasked with enforcing all parish and municipal ordinances concerning the k

eeping of animals within West Baton Rouge Parish, impounding any animals being kept in violation of those ordinances, and investigating animal cruelty complaints. As a shelter, we are tasked with doing everything we can to find positive outcomes for the neglected, unclaimed, and abandoned animals in our care. We do this through community outreach, social media outreach, volunteerism, and networking with rescues and adopters across the country. It is our sincere hope to build a trustworthy relationship with the members of our community. We strive to educate as many community members as possible on basic pet care and the importance of spay/neuter, in addition to the ordinances of this parish. We aim to provide comfort and basic medical care for the animals in our possession to the best of our ability. We ensure each animal that is adopted out through our shelter is either spayed or neutered, up to date on basic vaccinations, and has a microchip.

Due to this evening’s weather predictions we will not be attending the Full Moon Market in Plaquemine. The market has moved to an indoor venue at the Civic Center. Donations for our shelter will still be accepted.

All animals impounded at our shelter have a hold period of 3 days (no signs of ownership) or 6 days (signs of ownership). During this time, we are tirelessly seeking positive outcomes for these animals, and if determined to be adoptable, they may be adopted, placed in foster care, or transferred out to a rescue organization.

It is essential that we locate the owner as soon as possible, and they come to reclaim their animal within the timeframe specified by ordinance. We cannot promise the animal will still be in our care after the expired hold period.

Please note that many of the animals that end up at our shelter have been abandoned, neglected, abused, lost, stolen, found loose, or injured. Their photos may reflect these conditions. In accordance with the standards of care mandated by state law and in addition to standard vaccination and deworming protocols, we do provide minor medical care (including examination by a veterinarian if deemed necessary) for the animals in our care.

⚠️PLEASE NOTE⚠️
Our office will be closing on Wednesday, the 26th, at 10:30 a.m. and will remain closed in observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday until we resume regular business hours on Monday, December 1st.

Due to minimal staff on hand and the observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday, we will be temporarily suspending response to nuisance and trap requests this week and focusing on urgent matters only.

Our on-call staff will be responding to emergency situations ONLY during this time. Emergency situations include animal bite cases, animal lives in danger, and/or an immediate threat to public safety involving an animal. Situations involving non-threatening stray animals will be dealt with when we return to regular operations on 12/1/25.

If you have a nuisance situation involving a stray animal or a trap request, please call our office and leave a detailed message. We will return your call and schedule you for service when we resume regular hours on 12/1/25.

If you have a true emergency situation involving an animal, please dial 911 or contact your local law enforcement, and they will, in turn, dispatch an on-call animal control officer. Thank you for your patience during this time. From our staff to you and your family, Happy Thanksgiving!

We took a peek at these puppies’ Christmas wish lists. They all asked for the same thing, a forever family.

Our Story

West Baton Rouge Parish Shelter and Animal Control is a municipal shelter that was built in 1985. Our shelter aims to find positive outcomes for each animal in our care. We do this through community outreach, social media outreach, and networking with rescues and adopters across the country.

We hope our relationship with the members of our community continues to progress.

We value and appreciate those that volunteer their time and efforts to help us achieve these goals.
