West Baton Rouge Parish Shelter and Animal Control

West Baton Rouge Parish Shelter and Animal Control WBRP Shelter & Animal Control is a department of the WBR Parish Council.

Our mission is to enrich the quality of life for people and pets in our community through education, outreach, code enforcement, disease prevention, adoptions, and rescue/transports. West Baton Rouge Parish Shelter and Animal Control is a department of West Baton Rouge Parish Council. As an Animal Control department, we are tasked with enforcing all parish and municipal ordinances concerning the k

eeping of animals within West Baton Rouge Parish, impounding any animals being kept in violation of those ordinances, and investigating animal cruelty complaints. As a shelter, we are tasked with doing everything we can to find positive outcomes for the neglected, unclaimed, and abandoned animals in our care. We do this through community outreach, social media outreach, volunteerism, and networking with rescues and adopters across the country. It is our sincere hope to build a trustworthy relationship with the members of our community. We strive to educate as many community members as possible on basic pet care and the importance of spay/neuter, in addition to the ordinances of this parish. We aim to provide comfort and basic medical care for the animals in our possession to the best of our ability. We ensure each animal that is adopted out through our shelter is either spayed or neutered, up to date on basic vaccinations, and has a microchip.

All animals impounded at our shelter have a hold period of 3 days (no signs of ownership) or 6 days (signs of ownership). During this time, we are tirelessly seeking positive outcomes for these animals, and if determined to be adoptable, they may be adopted, placed in foster care, or transferred out to a rescue organization.
It is essential that we locate the owner as soon as possible, and they come to reclaim their animal within the timeframe specified by ordinance. We cannot promise the animal will still be in our care after the expired hold period.
Please note that many of the animals that end up at our shelter have been abandoned, neglected, abused, lost, stolen, found loose, or injured. Their photos may reflect these conditions. In accordance with the standards of care mandated by state law and in addition to standard vaccination and deworming protocols, we do provide minor medical care (including examination by a veterinarian if deemed necessary) for the animals in our care.

WBR Shelter & Animal Control would like to say a big thank you to this very special young lady. For her birthday, instead of presents, she asked her friends to bring a donation for our shelter animals. On behalf of our furry friends and shelter staff, thank you for thinking of us and for collecting these special gifts. We think your pretty pawsome!

!ATTENTION!
Do you know that allowing your animals to roam or run loose is against the law, endangers your animals, and endangers the safety and well-being of others? Some animal owners are unaware of the law, while some choose to ignore it. By far, most of the complaint calls and dangerous situations that we respond to daily here at WBRPSAC stem from owners who are not properly confining their animals and allowing them to roam or run loose on property other than their own.

Louisiana State law and WBR Parish ordinances mandate that all owned (pets and livestock) animals must be confined to their owner's property or person at all times. Part of being a good animal owner is being aware of and following local laws that govern the keeping of animals. You can access the ordinances that govern the keeping of animals within WBR Parish by clicking the link at the end of this post.

Animal owners who allow their pets or livestock to roam freely are putting themselves, their animals, and the community as a whole at risk. Potential consequences include:

1. Animal Fights: Loose animals may attack or be attacked by other animals, resulting in injuries. The animal owner can be held legally responsible for any harm caused or suffered.

2. Bites and Perceived Threats: A roaming animal may bite a person or be harmed by a person who sees it as a threat. Such incidents can lead to significant costs for the animal owner, including seizure of the animal, quarantine fines/fees, lawsuits for damages, insurance claims, and even criminal charges.

3. Wildlife Encounters: Loose animals are at risk of being injured or killed by venomous, aggressive, or rabid wildlife.

4. Unplanned Breeding: Unaltered free-roaming pets are the leading cause of millions of unwanted and abandoned animals that wind up in animal shelters across the nation every year.

5. Damage to Property: Roaming pets and livestock can cause major damage to the property of another person, for which the animal owner can be held liable.

6. Traffic Accidents: Animals struck by vehicles can suffer serious injury or death. They may also cause accidents that injure or kill motorists—liability for such incidents falls on the animal owner.

Failure to properly contain your animals will likely result in a visit from one of our animal control officers. They will investigate the complaint, and if you are found to be in violation of parish ordinances, they will issue you a warning notice to correct the violation promptly.

Failure to comply after being issued a warning notice can result in your animal/animals being impounded or confiscated, fines and fees being levied, and/or a criminal citation being issued.

WBRPSAC encourages all pet owners to be responsible and considerate of their neighbors. Please make sure your animals are properly confined and that you are familiar with the local laws regarding pet ownership.

Our Story

West Baton Rouge Parish Shelter and Animal Control is a municipal shelter that was built in 1985. Our shelter aims to find positive outcomes for each animal in our care. We do this through community outreach, social media outreach, and networking with rescues and adopters across the country.

We hope our relationship with the members of our community continues to progress.

We value and appreciate those that volunteer their time and efforts to help us achieve these goals.
