Too often, people fall in love with the idea of a dog rather than seeing the dog for who they truly are—an individual with a unique personality, quirks, and emotions. Instead of embracing their differences, they’re labeled: ‘too anxious,’ ‘needs special training,’ or ‘not the right fit.’
But what if we shifted our perspective? What if, instead of seeing ‘anxiety,’ we saw insecurity that needs patience? Instead of labeling reactivity as a flaw, we recognized that some dogs, just like us, are introverts who don’t need to befriend every stranger or greet every excitable dog they see.
We wouldn’t want to be put into a box based on one part of who we are—so why do we do that to the dogs we say we love so much? Dogs aren’t categories or stereotypes—they’re individuals, deserving of understanding, acceptance, and unconditional love. Let’s honor who they are instead of who we thought they’d be.
