⚠️ Safety tip: Remote-control operation allows users to position themselves a safe distance from the machine and jobsite dangers. If you do need to enter the risk zone (within reach of the machine's arm), make sure the machine is in emergency stop mode or deenergized and can’t be moved accidentally.

Happy Throwback Thursday!

In 2016 Interstate Sawing traveled from Wisconsin to Little Rock, Arkansas to drill openings for dynamite to be placed to blow up the Broadway Bridge! Interstate was tasked with drilling precise openings for dynamite placements needed to facilitate the demolition of the Broadway Bridge. The Broadway Bridge, a vital piece of infrastructure, was set to be replaced with a new bridge, and this required a carefully coordinated effort to safely bring down the aging structure. This project is another testimony for robotics and their positive impact on the construction industry.

Pushing the Boundaries of Demolition: Remote-Controlled Robotics on Lake Michigan

We recently completed an innovative demolition project on Lake Michigan, removing a massive concrete breakwater wall with the help of cutting-edge remote-controlled robots. This project highlighted the power of modern technology in transforming traditional demolition methods.

Here’s how we tackled this complex project, step-by-step:

1. Rock Drilling with Robots
Our first task was to drill precise holes into the concrete structure, and this was done entirely by remote-controlled robots. The robots’ high maneuverability and precision allowed us to safely and accurately drill through tough material, setting the stage for the next phase.

2.Concrete Splitting
Once the drilling was complete, we used a concrete splitter to crack large sections of the breakwater wall. This method allowed us to split the concrete into manageable pieces.

3. Breaking and Removing Concrete
After the concrete was split, we used the robots to break the large chunks into smaller pieces. With the precision of remote operation, we were able to systematically break down the structure, ensuring that each piece was small enough for transport.

4. Loading and Disposal
The final step was to load the concrete debris onto a barge for safe disposal. Using excavators, the pieces were efficiently loaded, minimizing any risk of environmental disruption during the removal process.

5. New Steel Barrier Installation by Roen Salvage Co.
Once the old breakwater was removed, Roen Salvage Co. took over to place a new steel barrier, enhancing the safety and integrity of the shoreline. Their expertise in marine construction was crucial in completing the final step of this project, ensuring a durable and reliable solution for the area.

This project is a perfect example of how robotics can revolutionize demolition work. By reducing the need for manual labor in dangerous and difficult-to-reach locations, we were able to complete the project both quickly and safely with minimal impact on the environment.
