While feeding a raw diet may be spiking in popularity, it may not be the best option for your pet. Just because dogs can technically eat raw meat, does not mean that they should. There are quite a few risks associated with feeding your dog a raw diet that are important to note.
Primarily, the American Veterinary Medical Association cautions that a raw diet may not provide proper balanced nutrition. In fact, consuming raw meat on the regular can actually increase the risk of nutritional deficiencies in the pet. A University of California, Davis study even revealed that there is hardly, if any, scientific support in favor of the raw diet.
The reason that most veterinarians would advise against a raw diet is the same reason that humans are not advised to consume raw meat; uncooked meat contains harmful bacteria that can cause illness and discomfort in our pets (and us). Raw chicken and beef specifically contain germs such as listeria and salmonella which can only be killed at high heat temperatures. Not only this, but you are putting yourself at risk by consistently handling these raw food products.
No matter what the issue, it is always the best and smartest idea to first consult with your veterinarian to ensure that you are doing the right thing to best fit the needs and interests of your pet. If your pet is on a raw diet, it is recommended by the CDC that all raw food is kept frozen then thawed in the fridge until use, and that all surfaces touched by the raw meat are thoroughly disinfected.
