Baby Finn has turned into a toddler! He loves to bite anything in sight and has no shame. This morning, he decided it was his turn to help with the waters, although he wasn't very good at scrubbing. π

Mr. Finn has gotten so big! He's a champ at going over the bridge, ground poles, weaving in and out of cones! He is starting to learn to stand tied, let us clean his hooves, and how to get into the trailer! He is such as easy going baby; we really lucked out with him!

It's a good feeling when you accidentally side pass at liberty π While trying to teach Reina, I gave a confusing cue towards her shoulder instead of her hip. Reina side stepped so nicely for me!

Biscuit has started to get back to work after taking a break to heal from an abscess in his hoof. We are happy that he is healing well!
We did a light walk in the round pen, and a short trot and he handled it great!

Lining up to the fence is a great trick to have in your pocket!
The horse disengages the hindquarters towards the fence line so that it is parallel with its body.
This can be helpful for maneuvering in tight spaces, like up to the mounting stairs, riding bareback in a field, or standing straight in the cross ties. It can help the horse be aware of their launches as well!

One step at a time!
When teaching a horse something new, we ask for one step in the right direction. It doesn't have to be pretty or perfect, but the right direction. The horse then gets a release and some scratches to let them know they did good! As the horse starts to understand the concept of what we are asking, we will ask for a few more steps, then steps with some energy. When the horse understands energy, you can ask for the movement quickly or slowly, and the horse will act in accordance with your energy. Eventually, we will have a willing partner and a horse who has a firm understanding of what we are asking!
Lexy is asking Reina to plant her hind foot and cross her front foot in front of the other in this video.

Today, Reina and Lexy worked on backing up!
Lexy asks Reina to back up by standing tall and having energy to her body (shoulders high and walking with a purpose), marching in place, and then stepping forward. Backing can be useful to get a horse out of your personal space, backing into a wash rack, or getting into tight spaces.
Right now, they are doing one confiedent step at a time, but as they both get better, they will start to add more steps!
