Animal Emergency & Referral Associates

Animal Emergency & Referral Associates Animal Emergency & Referral Associates is an emergency and veterinary specialty hospital, open 24/7, 365 days a year for emergencies.
(185)

Founded in 1977, we have been providing high quality veterinary care in the North Jersey area for over 40 years. From a small, after-hours emergency clinic to a fully staffed, specialty veterinary hospital group with ‘round-the-clock emergency care, AERA has come a long way. In 1977, a dedicated and visionary group of veterinarians founded the Animal Emergency Group, a center designed to treat aft

er-hours veterinary emergencies by creating a fully-staffed animal emergency medical facility. These doctors realized that rapid growth of the local pet population, along with broad technological advances in veterinary medicine, demanded a state-of-the-art facility to address the urgent and critical needs of beloved pets in their community. The Animal Emergency Group thus became one of the first hospitals dedicated to small animal emergency care in the United States. In order to provide a wider array of services, Animal Emergency Group (later known as Animal Emergency & Referral Associates) expanded in the mid-nineties to add several veterinary specialties, each offering exceptional care to our local pet community.

Meet Gnocchi 👋 This sweet labradoodle is pretty popular around AERA.

He just so happens to be one of our hospital leader's pups and will often join in on team meetings. He contributes a lot of great ideas such as how to increase the number of treats given throughout the day. We may have caught him sleeping under the conference table once or twice, but HR has decided to let it go. He's a perfect angel. 😇

Meet Bambi ❤️ This girl has been through so much.

After being struck by a car, crippling 3 of her legs, Bambi presented to AERA's emergency department and underwent intensive surgery and procedures with Dr. Brophy and members of our surgery team to save her legs. She was hospitalized for a week, then released into foster care to recover.

However, this sweet girl is a bit of an escape artist. She managed to re-injure herself, breaking the plate in her leg. She was hospitalized again and underwent surgery to repair the plate. The repair is reinforced with pins and allows for more movement. Thankfully, the long term results will be the same regardless. 🙏 She now comes back for regular bandage changes and will continue to do so until she is healed.

Bambi is back home with sleepy meds, crate rest, and 24/7 supervision while keeping her foster family on their toes!

Elvis has been coming to AERA for physical therapy due to a torn meniscus over the last year and has made tremendous strides! This sweet boy has a special place in our hearts and we are so proud of him for reaching his one-year anniversary of physical therapy, especially at 15 years old! And shout out to his dad, who always ensures he is safe with his little boots. ❤️

While you're having fun with family and friends this Memorial Day Weekend, remember the following tips to help keep your pets safe this holiday:

⭐ Cookouts are popular this holiday weekend, but the food and drink you serve your guests may be dangerous for pets. A few especially toxic examples include alcohol, raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate, and avocado.

⭐ Never leave your pets unsupervised around a pool, lake, or ocean. If you take your dog on a boat, we highly recommend having them wear a floatation device and keep them from drinking salt water. Also, try to keep your dog from drinking pool water, which contains potentially dangerous chemicals.

⭐ Be sure that your pet has appropriate ID tags and up-to-date microchip information. People leaving doors open and loud noises such as fireworks or thunderstorms can all increase your pets’ chances of escaping.

⭐ Be sure your pet has easy access to plenty of water so they don't get dehydrated - preferably in a shady spot, especially if they are spending a lot of time outside.

As a reminder, AERA is open 24/7/365 and are open the entire holiday weekend in case you need us.

AERA recently participated in Senior Day for the Veterinary Technician Program at Bergan Community College. Graduating seniors spoke with various hospital representatives about all things veterinary medicine, and several prizes were raffled off to a few lucky students.

AERA has a long-standing relationship with BCC, offering externships and educational support. We are happy to support future veterinary technicians and offer opportunities for students at our hospital, or wherever they decide to pursue employment.

Here at AERA, we are proud of the work our team does every day!

Meet Deacon, a 4-year-old English Setter. He presented to AERA for treatment of nasal carcinoma, which are locally aggressive tumors that arise from the normal tissues of the inner nose and invade and involve the surrounding tissues including bone.

On presentation, Deacon had severe facial swelling and mass effects on the bridge of the nose and frontal sinus region. Due to his young age, our Board-Certified Radiation Oncologist, Dr. Chang recommended fractionated radiation therapy. This treatment consists of 18 times of small radiation doses to the tumor site.

Deacon went through 3 weeks of treatments and 2 weeks duration of expected acute side effects on the treatment site, which healed on its own with a short course of pain medication.

We are thrilled to share that his tumor showed a complete response at both his 6 and 12-month recheck CT scans!

We will continue to monitor Deacon over the next several years, but are so happy that he is currently disease-free! ❤️🙌

We had so much fun last Thursday, April 25th with our entire AERA family during Bring Your Child to Work Day!

All the kids participated in watching an ultrasound, toured the facility, and most importantly had a great time!

It means so much to our team to show the future generation how important it is to provide exceptional veterinary care! ❤️🐾❤️ 🐾

This past Sunday, AERA hosted many of our referring Veterinarian partners and their staff for a full day of RACE-approved continuing education sessions. Several of AERA's Doctors of Veterinary Medicine presented on topics including ophthalmology, physical rehabilitation, emergency, and surgery.

It was a packed day full of education, fun, and networking! Thank you to those who attended our second annual spring CE symposium. We look forward to seeing you again next year!

Kathy Jones, Certified Veterinary Technician at AERA, participated in Career Day at Paterson Charter School for Science and Technology. She shared her career journey and information about animal-related jobs with several groups of students ranging from 8th to 12th grade. Being a veterinary technician is Kathy's second career, and she told students that's it's never too late (or too early) to follow your heart, and work doing what you love to do.❤️

Jefferson Elementary School Second Grade Brownie Girl Scout Troop 20174 recently earned their "Caring for Pets" badge at AERA. Members of the troop and their parents/chaperones spent more than an hour with us. They toured the 45,000 square-foot facility, and several specialty departments explained the work they do. Myriad questions were answered, and the Scouts were able to practice bandaging various stuffed animals. AERA is proud to inspire the next generation of veterinary medicine practitioners. ❤️

Daylight Saving Time begins at 2:00am on Sunday! ⏰

As we spring ahead, our pets may be a little confused by their new meal times so keep that in mind as we all adjust to the new schedule.

We hope you and your pet are able to take advantage of the extra hour of daylight by spending some quality time outdoors. 🌞

With the rise of spring comes an increase of pollen as flowers bloom and grasses, weeds, and trees flourish. Just like people, pets can suffer from seasonal allergies. Here are a few tips to help reduce exposure during allergy season:

🌸 Bathe pets more often
🌼 Wipe them down after going outside
🌳 Wash their bedding weekly
🌻 Keep your home tidy (especially rugs and upholstered furniture)
🌷 Replace air filters

If you notice your pet is experiencing any consistent symptoms of irritation or discomfort, visit your veterinarian to help evaluate their condition and discuss treatment options.
