Happy Tuesday, friends!! 🐾❤️
Run, don't walk to sign up and save yourself a slot for our summer group classes! Metaphorically, of course. We're excited to announce we have created our summer group class schedule will be starting on June 10th. These classes will take place in local parks around Duluth. All dogs are welcome, of course, with the normal vaccine requirements of Rabies and Distemper. The cost is $40/class. We also ask that everyone brings their own items for a "place". This can be a mat, blanket, bed, or whatever works for your pup. If you need something to use as a place, we are happy to provide a cloth one for you. If you or someone you know is interested in signing up or getting more information, please email us at [email protected].
It's always wonderful to hear the successes our clients have with their pups. Big or small, no success should go unnoticed. Miss Maggie and Ellie got to join their mom at work for their pet parade. This is what their mom said, "Thank you for helping us succeed in training our dogs to be so well behaved!!!! It’s comforting to know we can trust them around even the most fragile people:)"
Feel free to share your own successes!
Our short-term partnership with the Duluth Kennel Club is almost up! Not to fret, we will hold one last Canine Good Citizen group class at their facility starting this Monday, April 15th at 6:30pm.
CGC classes are available for any dogs 5 months or older. Each class will last about an hour long for four weeks. After the four weeks, you are welcome to come to a fifth class to either test your pup and earn the CGC certificate or just get some more practice.
All dogs must be up to date on Rabies, Bordetella, and Distemper vaccines.
Class Schedule:
Class #1 on Mon 4/15 @6:30 pm
Class #2 on Mon 4/22 @6:30 pm
Class #3 on Mon 4/29 @6:30 pm
Class #4 on Mon 5/6 @6:30 pm
Bonus Class/Test on Mon 5/13 @6:30 pm
After this group class comes to a close, we will be in the process of creating a schedule for our outdoor group classes for both beginner and advanced obedience. More information to come!
If you or someone you know is interested in our CGC group class or just wants to get out and do stuff with their pup, please reach out to us via email at [email protected].
Congratulations to our first group of STAR puppy graduates! If you or someone you know have a puppy under the age of 6 months and are interested in socializing and doing some basic training, feel free to reach out to us! We still have space for our next class starting on Monday, March 11th at 5:30pm.
Valentine's Day is a day to celebrate your special "some-puppy". Here's to celebrating our fur-ever loves! Happy Valentine's Day to you and your pups!
Do you or someone you know have a puppy that would benefit from some socialization and training around other young pups? We’ll give you a hint…all puppies can benefit from this!
In partnership with the Duluth Kennel Club, we are happy to announce that we are offering a 4 week puppy class and a 6 week AKC S.T.A.R. puppy class. These classes are a great way to start creating a bond with your new puppy and build a foundation for further training.
We are offering these classes to anyone interested with a puppy of 5 months or younger. The 4 week class is $100 while the 6 week class is $150. There are also no previous training requirements for puppies that attend. Puppies must be up to date on vaccines for their current age. The next set of classes will start on March 11th. Classes will be held on Monday evenings at 5:30pm.
If you or someone you know is interested, please email us for more information at [email protected].
Did Santa drop a new fur baby in your lap this holiday?
The Homeschooled Pooch, in partnership with the Duluth Kennel Club, is happy to announce that we will be starting a winter and spring series of adult dog group classes as well as puppy classes for the new year. We will be holding classes at the Duluth Kennel Club's building in Lincoln Park.
We are offering a traditional 4 week package, which includes all the basics as well as lots of personal attention for our trainers. Completion of 4 weeks of group classes qualifies you for a free CGC (Canine Good Citizen) evaluation.
In addition, our AKC Star Puppy Program runs for 6 weeks (4 weeks if you do not wish to receive the certificate) and will cover all of the AKC Star Puppy requirements as well as answering any questions you might have about your puppy and their care. We also will be working on socializing your puppy with other dogs, people/children and weird situations.
Dates and times are to be determined, but it looks like Monday evenings are our goal.
If you or someone you know would benefit from or would like to participate in our group classes please let us know! Email [email protected] for more information or to sign up!
To say these pups had fun with all the fresh snow is a severe understatement!
To bring in the new year, we would like to announce a new adventure we will embark on in the near future.
The Homeschooled Pooch and the Duluth Kennel Club are teaming up together to help better serve the community. We are excited to announce that we will now be offering lower-cost, semi-private lessons on select Saturdays at the Duluth Kennel Club building in Lincoln Park.
These semi private lessons will consist of two separate lessons occurring in tandem with one another. At least two trainers will attend these lessons in order to best give you and your pup the individual attention you need. Each lesson will be 45 minutes long and will cost $50 per dog. You are able to sign up with a friend or we can pair you up on a first come, first served basis.
If you are interested in signing up or want more information, please email us at [email protected].
We will require that you provide proof of current vaccinations PRIOR the your lesson.
Here's wishing a happy and safe howlidays from our pups to yours! 💛💙 Let's all share some howliday spirit!

We just realized it's been a hot second since The Homeschooled Pooch appeared in your feed! Here's what we were just up to today: 1) Augie made a new friend! He played hard (but appropriately!) with young Samara, trainer Mikayla's pup. 2) Cupid and Gary Pup worked with trainers Amy and Jason on a nice calm down in the shade, focusing on their trainers instead of on one another. 3) Trainer Amy walked Loki past Augie and Gary Pup, as they worked on being calm and relaxed when they see other dogs.
📣 We’ve got news! We have made some changes to our training programs to give more clients access to our day school! ♥️ You can find more details about our training packages on our website under the “Our Services” link. 🐾

‼️ Beware‼️ This plant can REALLY hurt you and your dog.
It’s called wild parsnip, an invasive plant that can cause a painful blistering chemical rash on your skin, your dog’s paws, and in the mouth and throat if they try to eat it!
The clusters of little yellow flowers resemble dill, or a yellow Queen Anne’s Lace, and the plants can grow as tall as a human.
If you see this plant in your neighborhood, don’t touch it and PLEASE don’t mow over it. (Mowing only spreads it around!)
Oh my dog, these pups are too sweet! 🥰 🐾
Olive & Freyja are quickly becoming experts at ignoring other dogs on their walks. Practice makes perfect! 🤩🐾
Summer group class registration is open! Email us at [email protected] (or message us with your e-mail address) for more information and to register.
Classes will be held on Monday evenings and Saturday mornings in city parks throughout the city of Duluth. Cost is $40 per class.

Last Friday, the puppies played hard…they got filthy…and they definitely earned themselves a pool party! 😂💕🐾
Would you believe that this little guy has “dog issues??” Check out little TaterTot enjoying a group walk with two other dogs - and one of them is a puppy! 🥰 Our “doggie day school” is exactly the kind of immersive experience that dogs like TaterTot need. Dogs at our school spend the day practicing their academic and social skills with professional trainers - and their owners get to take home a tired, satisfied pup at the end of the day! (Day school is a training option offered as a part of our combined training program, and is also available as a single-day option to dogs who have already completed a training package with us!)
We (Jason & Amy) have been fostering this girl for about 2 months now. She was anxious, always on full alert during walks, and acted a fool if she came within a block of another dog. She has a rap sheet that includes attacking and seriously injuring the family cat, and breaking loose and biting someone’s dog. Her behavior issues had been progressing quickly, and it was becoming unsafe for her to remain in her home. 😔 We have been able to offer a relatively sterile environment for Mini, and totally “reset” her. We achieved this by converting our basement into a boarding kennel suitable for a solo Great Dane. She has her own private entrance/exit, so that she can get out for walks and to do her business without being exposed to the 2 other dogs who live with us, @buck.and.onyx 🐾 With very few exceptions, her exposure to other dogs has been minimal, pre-planned, and very much controlled. Great Danes are more sensitive than most people realize, so Mini’s first week with us was calm, quiet, and dull. She was fed (oftentimes hand fed, actually) and clicker conditioned. She went for walks before sunrise and after sunset, to help ensure we didn’t run into ANYONE as she got to know her new neighborhood. She worked on her basic obedience essentially in a vacuum and experienced success after success. This video was taken about a month ago, a few days before Christmas. We are practicing long line recalls on the Waabizheshikana / western waterfront trail. Stay tuned for more updates on this sweet, beautiful girl! ❤️
Group classes in a public park give dogs and their owners the opportunity to practice real-world skills in the real world! Portland Square Park in Duluth's hillside was the location of last Thursday night's class. What a great job these pups are doing with their leash manners! :) Watch for our fall group class announcement, coming soon. (If your dog isn't ready for group class yet, contact us! Our trainers travel to you!)
SpOoKy!! 👻 Ziggy was totally spooked by these construction materials during his 2-hour training field trip with Jason last week. So what do you do when you encounter something your pup is fearful of? Rule #1: Don’t force him to face his fears until he is ready! Force NEVER quickens the process. In Ziggy’s case, he was brave enough to approach and investigate, so Jason let him do that at his own pace. Because Ziggy is clicker conditioned, Jason is using the clicker as a positive marker to acknowledge and encourage Ziggy’s heroism. 😉 (You can also use praise, and maybe even give your pup some yummy treats to help him or her form a more positive association with the “spooky” dog, human, or object.) This is a type of learning called “classical conditioning.”
Your dog sits and downs when you ask her to, but how well does she REALLY understand sit and down? She can sit from a stand... but can she sit from a down? Can she down from a stand? Does she sit while she’s in motion? How about a long-distance down, or a sit while you walk circles around her? (This little gal is Qi’ra, working on some intermediate "sit" and "down" training exercises with trainer Amy at Washington Square earlier this week.)
