Congratulations,
Madisyn Szymczak & Charisma 14! 💫

There’s something magical about the number 14…

Number 1440, Madisyn Szymczak in her 14th year of riding piloted Charisma 14, a 14 year old Czech Mare to a 14th Place finish out of 95 in the classic at 2025 Junior Hunter Finals!!

The number 14 clearly isn’t just a coincidence. It’s a symbol of their journey, their growth, and their connection!!

Here’s to many more memorable moments in the ring! ✨

Way to go, Madisyn & Charisma!

What a Weekend at IEA Nationals!

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our riders at IEA Nationals 2025!

Kenley earned her spot as the top Open Rider in Zone 5, securing an invitation to the Varsity Open Championship Class, the highest level of IEA competition! She rode with grit and grace to place 3rd overall in the combined jumping and flat phases. To cap it off, Kenley also won the High School Horsemanship Test, showcasing her knowledge and skill both in and out of the saddle!

Natalie, the top Adult Over Fences rider in Zone 5, proved she could hold her own among the nation’s best. She brought home the 7th place ribbon in a competitive class of adult riders. Way to go, Natalie!

Payton, in her first-ever IEA season, lived up to every expectation by winning at Zones and earning her ticket to Nationals. Competing against the top 18 riders in the country for her division, she confidently made the call back and brought home a well-earned 7th place ribbon. What an incredible debut!

We couldn’t be more proud of Kenley, Natalie, Payton, and our entire team for an amazing 2024–2025 IEA season. Your hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship continue to inspire! Until next year! 🥳Go Team Go🥳

In Loving Memory of ReidJanuary 16, 1990 - April 24, 2025

With heavy hearts we share that Reid, at the age of 35, crossed into horse heaven on April 24, 2025. Reid, Also known by many names, including Tommy’s Pop Gun, Ready Set Go and Dream Catcher, was not just a horse; he was a legend, an icon, and an irreplaceable partner to countless riders lucky enough to call him their teacher and teammate.

Reid’s career was one marked by both triumph and tremendous heart including being Long Listed in 2001, a dream few ever reach. Although an untimely injury kept him from stepping into that particular spotlight, Reid’s greatness was never defined by any one arena or title. It was defined by his courage, his generosity, and the countless lives he touched along the way.

Perhaps Reid’s greatest legacy lies not in the ribbons he won, but in the confidence, passion, and belief he inspired in his riders. He was the kind of horse who met every person where they were. Whether they were taking their very first jump, walking into a competition ring, or recovering from their first fall off, he carried them forward with steadfast patience and unwavering spirit.

For Natalie, his first official lessee with Team Somerset, Reid was a once-in-a-lifetime partner. It was Reid who brought her to her first jumper class, opening the door to a new world of speed, precision, and excitement. It was Reid who led her to her first medal final, guiding her with the quiet wisdom of a seasoned champion and the kind soul of a true friend. With Reid beneath her, Natalie like so many others, learned not just how to ride, but how to trust herself, dream bigger, and chase after it with all her heart.

In every ring he entered and every lesson he gave, Reid exemplified everything good about the partnership between horse and rider. He was brave, honest, forgiving, and wise beyond measure. A teacher who gave endlessly and loved without condition.

His hoofprints, both literal and metaphorical, have been left on the hearts of all who knew him, and his spirit will continue to inspire generations to come.

Thank you, Reid, for the countless gifts you gave: for the lessons, the milestones, the unforgettable moments of triumph, and the quiet, steadfast support through every challenge. You were a once-in-a-lifetime horse, and you will be missed beyond words.

Rest easy, sweet boy. Your journey here may be done, but your story, and your spirit live on forever. Say hello to your heavenly besties! 💕

At Team Somerset, we support and encourage riders aspiring to continue their riding careers at the intercollegiate level by offering hands-on guidance and involvement throughout the college process. This Weekend Madisyn Szymczak, Coach Tiffany Lynn Walker and Mom Jackie Sperando Szymczak traveled south to Jamie Gerardi Equestrian who hosted an Equestrian Talent Search clinic with top clinicians Jim Arrigon and Coach Kathryn from Purdue! ✨ As Madisyn starts her college search her eye is on a few schools that suit her riding and academic goals. This clinic was a great opportunity to fine-tune skills, gain valuable insights and prepare for upcoming recruitments.

Preach!

Preach!

Things your riding instructor wants you to know:
1. This sport is hard. You don't get to bypass the hard…..every good rider has gone through it. You make progress, then you don't, and then you make progress again. Your riding instructor can coach you through it, but they cannot make it easy.

2. You're going to ride horses you don't want to ride. If you're teachable, you will learn from every horse you ride. Each horse in the barn can teach you if you let them. IF YOU LET THEM. Which leads me to…

3. You MUST be teachable to succeed in this sport. You must be teachable to succeed at anything, but that is another conversation. Being teachable often means going back to basics time and time and time again. If you find basics boring, then your not looking at them as an opportunity to learn. Which brings me to…..

4. This sport is a COMMITMENT. Read that, then read it again. Every sport is a commitment, but in this sport your teammate weighs 1200 lbs and speaks a different language. Good riders don't get good by riding every once in awhile….they improve because they make riding a priority and give themsevles opportunity to practice.

5. EVERY RIDE IS AN OPPORTUNITY. Even the walk ones. Even the hard ones. Every. Single. Ride. Remember when you just wished someone would lead you around on a horse? Find the happiness in just being able to RIDE. If you make every ride about what your AREN'T doing, you take the fun out of the experience for yourself, your horse, and your instructor. Just enjoy the process. Which brings me to...

6. Riding should be fun. It is work. and work isn't always fun.....but if you (or your rider) are consistently choosing other activities or find yourself not looking forward to lessons, it's time to take a break. The horses already know you don't want to be here, and you set yourself up for failure if you are already dreading the lesson before you get here.

7. You'll learn more about horses from the ground than you ever will while riding. That's why ground lessons are important, too. If you're skipping ground lessons (or the part of your lesson that takes place on the ground), you're missing out on the most important parts of the lesson. You spend far more time on the ground with horses than you do in the saddle.

8. Ask questions and communicate. If you're wondering why your coach is having you ride a particular horse or do an exercise, ask them. Then listen to their answer and refer to #3 above.

9. We are human beings. We make decisions (some of them life and death ones) every day. We balance learning for students with workloads for horses and carry the bulk of this business on our shoulders. A little courtesy goes a long way.

Of all the sports your child will try through their school years, riding is one of 3 that they may continue regularly as adults (golf and skiing are the others). People who coach riding spend the better part of their free time and much of their disposable income trying to improve their own riding and caring for the horses who help teach your child. They love this sport and teaching others…..but they all have their limits. Not all good riders are good coaches, but all good coaches will tell you that the process to get good is not an easy one.
