🌟📣 Zookeeper Spotlight: Meet Jaydan, our newest snake whisperer.

Jaydan began her career at Randall Oaks Zoo in September of last year and ever since then she has been making a huge impact here.

Jaydan graduated in May from Missouri State University with a bachelor’s degree in animal science. She previously was an assistant zookeeper for almost 3 years at Dickerson Park Zoo, working with reptiles and other native animals.

Naturally, her favorite animals to work with at Randall Oaks Zoo are our reptiles. As for her favorite, that would be our Yellow Amazon Tree Boa, Kaa. Kaa is Jaydan’s training animal, and she is so happy to see how far Kaa has come along in forming a positive relationship with her.

Outside of work, Jaydan likes to paint, listen to music, binge-watch "Bob’s Burgers", and hang out with friends and family. Thank you, Jaydan, for all that you are doing for the zoo! We are so happy to have you apart of the team!

The Great Horned Owl 🦉

🌙 Did you know? The great horned owl is one of the most widespread and powerful owls in North America, and they can be found all over Illinois. With their large, tufted "horns" and deep hoots, these owls are a sign of wisdom and strength in the animal kingdom.

At Randall Oaks Zoo, we have a special great horned owl named Winky! Winky is a resilient owl who only has one eye, but he still rules the night with his powerful flight and hunting abilities.

Great horned owls are nocturnal hunters, capable of swooping down on prey with silent flight.

The Beautiful Red Fox 🦊

🌿 Illinois Wildlife Fact: The red fox is a cunning and adaptable animal found in woodlands, fields, and even urban areas across Illinois.

Did you know? Randall Oaks Zoo is home to 5 red foxes, including Huckleberry and Violet, who have unique coat colors—Huckleberry is a marble phase and Violet is a silver phase. Despite their different appearances, they are still red foxes, just like how labs come in different coat colors! These rare phases are hard to spot in the wild.

With their sharp senses and incredible agility, red foxes can hunt small mammals and birds, and they are known for their "mysterious" behavior—often appearing and disappearing quickly!

🌱 Did you know? The eastern box turtle is the only turtle species in Illinois that can fully close its shell to protect itself from predators.

At Randall Oaks Zoo, we are home to two special box turtles—Cuff and Link! These two are beloved residents here, and we’re proud to care for them while also educating visitors about their importance in our ecosystem.

Sadly, eastern box turtles are listed as a species of concern in Illinois due to habitat loss and road mortality. Let's work together to protect these unique reptiles!

The Majestic White-Tailed Deer 🦌

🌿 Illinois Wildlife Fact: The white-tailed deer is one of the most common animals in Illinois, and they're easily recognizable by the distinctive white underside of their tail.

These deer can run up to 30 miles per hour and leap over obstacles up to 8 feet high! Keep an eye out when you're hiking in Illinois—they could be just around the corner.

🌟 Animal Spotlight: Meet Jasper, our almost 3-year-old raccoon! 🌟

Jasper arrived at Randall Oaks Zoo on July 25, 2022, from CARE rehabilitation center when he was only 3 months old. How did he end up at a rehabilitation center? Jasper and his litter were orphaned. He was unable to be released back into the wild due to his coloration. Most raccoons have darker pigmentation to blend into their surroundings at night. Since Jasper’s coat was lighter, it was unsafe for him to be released into the wild.

Jasper currently resides with our female raccoon Opal who also has lighter pigmentation. Both Jasper and Opal enjoy snuggling up to one another during the day, especially in the winter. They both love training at 11:00 am with their keepers, interacting with their daily enrichment, and playing with the hose water during the summer months.

🌸 Spring is here, and so are the animals! 🦋🌿

As the weather warms, animals become more active. Here’s what’s happening:

🐦 Reproduction: Birds sing, frogs croak, and squirrels find their mates!
🦊 Migration: Some animals travel to new places.
🍃 Food Gathering: Bears can eat 20,000 calories a day, while deer and rabbits scavenge gardens.
🏠 Nesting: Birds build nests, and squirrels might cozy up in your attic.
🐢 Hibernation Ends: Turtles, frogs, and bears are waking up!

With increased activity, you might spot more wildlife around. Be mindful of potential infestations – they can sneak into your home! 🐾🐾

🐾📣 Animal Spotlight: Meet Winnie, our African Pygmy Hedgehog. She is one of 5 hedgehogs that we have at the zoo!

African Pygmy Hedgehogs are one of 17 species that can be found in Europe, Asia, Africa, and are an invasive species in New Zealand. They are common pets though due to their adorable faces. These mammals are insectivores, using their large noses to smell for insects at night. Wild hedgehogs will often eat berries as well.

How do they protect themselves against larger animals? Their spines of course. When threatened, they will curl up into a ball, stick their spines up, and make themselves sound big and scary.

Winnie is our oldest hedgehog and the sweetest. She enjoys sleeping under blankets during the day and eating her mealworms.

⭐📣 Zookeeper Spotlight: Meet Lisa, Randall Oaks Zoo’s Employee of the Year!

Lisa has been featured in our monthly newsletter before, but she deserves another shout out. We named her 2024’s Employee of the Year because of her amazing work ethic, teamwork skills, knowledge, and overall love for this job.

We do not know what we would do without her. Lisa moved into a new role last year as one of our animal leads where she is the go to for all things animal before sending news up to our Animal Curator and Zoo Manager.

She is also co-head of our animal management team where she is in charge of our animal training program. Keepers learn something new every day when working with Lisa due to all of her experience and see her true passion shine.

We could not think of anyone else that deserved this title more than her. Thank you Lisa for everything. We love you girl!
