🌸 Spring is here, and so are the animals! 🦋🌿

As the weather warms, animals become more active. Here’s what’s happening:

🐦 Reproduction: Birds sing, frogs croak, and squirrels find their mates!
🦊 Migration: Some animals travel to new places.
🍃 Food Gathering: Bears can eat 20,000 calories a day, while deer and rabbits scavenge gardens.
🏠 Nesting: Birds build nests, and squirrels might cozy up in your attic.
🐢 Hibernation Ends: Turtles, frogs, and bears are waking up!

With increased activity, you might spot more wildlife around. Be mindful of potential infestations – they can sneak into your home! 🐾🐾

🐾📣 Animal Spotlight: Meet Winnie, our African Pygmy Hedgehog. She is one of 5 hedgehogs that we have at the zoo!

African Pygmy Hedgehogs are one of 17 species that can be found in Europe, Asia, Africa, and are an invasive species in New Zealand. They are common pets though due to their adorable faces. These mammals are insectivores, using their large noses to smell for insects at night. Wild hedgehogs will often eat berries as well.

How do they protect themselves against larger animals? Their spines of course. When threatened, they will curl up into a ball, stick their spines up, and make themselves sound big and scary.

Winnie is our oldest hedgehog and the sweetest. She enjoys sleeping under blankets during the day and eating her mealworms.

⭐📣 Zookeeper Spotlight: Meet Lisa, Randall Oaks Zoo’s Employee of the Year!

Lisa has been featured in our monthly newsletter before, but she deserves another shout out. We named her 2024’s Employee of the Year because of her amazing work ethic, teamwork skills, knowledge, and overall love for this job.

We do not know what we would do without her. Lisa moved into a new role last year as one of our animal leads where she is the go to for all things animal before sending news up to our Animal Curator and Zoo Manager.

She is also co-head of our animal management team where she is in charge of our animal training program. Keepers learn something new every day when working with Lisa due to all of her experience and see her true passion shine.

We could not think of anyone else that deserved this title more than her. Thank you Lisa for everything. We love you girl!

🌟🐾 Animal Spotlight 🐾🌟

Good day, mate! Allow me to introduce our two Bennett’s wallabies, Walter and Willow!

Walter and Willow have called Randall Oaks their home since they were just babies. Walter is smaller than Willow and is the typical brown color whereas Willow is albino (she cannot make color).

Bennett’s wallabies originate from the east coast of Australia and Tasmania. Just like kangaroos, they are marsupial mammals which means their babies are born the size of jellybeans. The babies then climb into momma’s pouch where they grow and drink her milk for months.

What is the major difference between kangaroos, wallaroos, and wallabies? Wallabies are typically smaller.

Walter and Willow live with our Emu named Lady Di. You will often see them grazing on grass in their enclosure.

🐾 Important Update: Enhancing Our Animal Feeding Experience

Big news, animal lovers! Starting March 17th, we're making some important changes to our feeding practices at Randall Oaks Zoo to ensure the best care for our beloved animals. ❤️

After 60 years of feeding traditions, we’re aligning with the best practices in animal care. This means we will discontinue the sale of feed cups and remove the feeders available for purchase.

But don’t worry! We’ve got exciting new ways for you to connect with our animals! Stay tuned for more details. 🦙🦆

It is with heavy hearts that we share the sad news of the passing of our beloved Poppy the
opossum. Like many of our animals, Poppy was rescued from the wild and brought to a rehabilitation center before finding her forever home with us, as she was unable to return to her natural habitat. We feel so fortunate to have had Poppy with us for as long as we did. Opossums have a naturally short lifespan, typically living only 1 to 3 years, whether in the wild or in human care.

Poppy arrived at the zoo on May 11th of 2023 and was believed to have already been a year old. In the time we have known her, Poppy has made a huge impact on our community. She was one of the best animal ambassadors the zoo ever had, traveling to schools, nursing homes, and educating zoo guests on how amazing opossums truly are. When Poppy was not educating the public, she was more than likely either taking a long snooze in her enclosure or stuffing her face with food. She loved her daily yogurt, fruits, and protein sources like scrambled eggs.

Poppy will be incredibly missed by the community, her keepers, and especially Kath Ellinghausen, former Randall Oaks Zoo’s Manager of Interpretation and Recreation Services. She was Kath’s favorite animal and Poppy’s favorite person!

Poppy, we love you girl. Rest easy. ♥️

🌟🐾 Zookeeper Spotlight: Meet Ali Lawler, one of our cashiers that has been working with us since April of 2023!

When Ali is working either the ticket booth or gift shop, you will often find one, if not both, of our barn cats with her. Toby specifically loves to sit on her lap in gift shop which is not the worst thing on cold days!

Her favorite parts about working at the zoo are watching the animals grow up and continuing to learn about them each day.

Ali enjoys listening to music, making jewelry, reading, and hanging out with her amazing friends when she is not working.

She is currently studying at Elgin Community College to become a substance abuse counselor. Thank you Ali for all that you do! 🙌
