Check out our Level 2 rockstars crushing some distraction and distance stays! ✋🏼 🛑😍
Nothing better than a big thunder storm on the first night of class but the fans are on high and we’re ready! ⛈️ 🐕
At first glance it might look like I’m working working with our new helper dog, Jude, and since training is happening all the time, I am! What I’d really like to highlight here is the excellent work of Bailey and Bowie, our clients walking past!
Bowie is a dog with anxiety that’s more than likely genetic. This shows up in his need to control his environment especially around dogs and people. Living in the Bangor area, the triggers are everywhere. We started by working on relaxation and inhibition control through stays and building a better focus response around distractions. We also spent a lot of time working on this beautiful loose leash walk. When we had a good base line we started working around triggers using my entire pack at varying distances and intensities.
We found that larger dogs are harder for Bowie but as you can see, his progress has been fantastic! Just like humans, he has good days and harder days but we are very proud of his progress as just a few weeks prior he wasn’t able to walk to past Jude without feeling the need take control of the situation!
Also, big high five for our new guy who has made our lives better every day! ❤️
In our Level 1 and Level 2 classes we talk a lot about loose leash walking. We talk about what I call the “catch and release” style walking or functional walking. Here is a POV of what that looks like!
The average pet parent probably doesn’t need their dog in heel all the time and the walk is for you AND the dog! Giving your dog the freedom to sniff and make choices greatly impacts their quality of life! BUT it should be enjoyable for both of you…and your dog should still have a good understanding of how to walk calmly next to you when needed!
This doesn’t happen over night! I’ll be transparent and share that I have been working with my buddy Falkor fairly regularly, with the buy in from his amazing parents, since late last fall to achieve this. He was not always this incredibly docile, picturesque version of a Golden Retriever. If fact, at one point, he was so out of control he seriously injured one of his handlers out of pure excitement. Falkor has always had A LOT of love to give. 😅 But with understanding, time, consistency, and commitment any dog can have these results!
Our scent teams were the sunshine in the rain today! Less than fantastic conditions didn’t slow them down for a second!
Happy National Puppy Day!! We can’t choose a favorite class but Puppy Class would definitely be near the top! 😍 #nationalpuppyday
My foster dog, Franki, is looking for her forever home! Message me for more details!
Franki is a 1 year old Australian Cattle Dog available for adoption through the Penobscot Valley Humane Society! We are actively searching for her forever home! Message me for more details!
A little taste of what we did during Falkor’s weekly drop off training!
Does anyone else feel like we’re on the 3rd mud season of the year? Anyone else tired of wiping feet and seats and couches and floors? 🤚🏼
Chocolate Lab teenager, Primrose, and her handler LeeAnn had an excellent day shed (antler) hunting today! We’ve been working with this awesome team for a few months on basic scent work and decided to take a little field trip today to try working around higher level distractions. We had some easy wins and worked through some more complicated longer finds all of which she aced!
🐾 FUNCTIONAL WALKING 🐾 Most people don’t need a high level obedience style of walking and we like to think the walk is for the dog too! But there should be a level of respect and understanding on both ends of the leash. Enjoyable walks make walks more frequent!
