Great news! Glacier National Park announced today:

Going-to-the-Sun Road is now open all the way over Logan Pass to hikers and bicyclists, when the road crew is not working!

When the road crew is working, the area between Bird Woman Falls Overlook and Lunch Creek may be closed. Any closures will be clearly marked and signed. The Road Crew Closure is typically in place Monday-Thursday until 4 pm.

Conditions can change quickly, and the road may close again (temporarily) to hikers and bikers for safety reasons. Follow all posted signage. Violators are putting their safety and the safety of our park rangers at risk and could face up to a $5,000 fine and up to 6 months in jail.

The alpine section of Going-to-the-Sun Road remains closed to vehicles.

Didn't get a reservation for the Going-to-the-Sun Road? 🗻 🚗 Not to worry! You can still access the breathtaking Glacier National Park without a reservation. Here are a few tips:

1. Next Day vehicle reservations will be available at 7 p.m. MDT for next-day entry on a daily rolling basis.

2. Use Park Shuttles: Hop on the park’s shuttle system to enjoy the views without needing a reservation.

3. Visit Early or Late in the Day: Reservations are required between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m., so plan your visit outside these hours.

Have you ever heard of huckleberries? They're a native wild berry that ripen later in the summer, and we love them! They're like blueberries, but better. And we put them in everything! 💜

Freda's bar has various huckleberry drinks including their Spiked Huckleberry Lemonade, Huckleberry Mule, Huckleberry Margarita, and a local beer called Huckleberry Honey. Plus, huckleberry milkshakes, ice cream and cream soda! 🍦

We love winter hiking! Avalanche Lake is gorgeous with a dusting of snow. Plus, the lake might be frozen enough to ice skate! ⛸️ ❄️

Take advantage of the road still being open until Avalanche Lake Campground, otherwise you'll have to hike in or cross country ski an extra 5 miles when the road closes at Lake McDonald Lodge.

Looking for a moderate hike with spectacular views? Try Apgar Lookout. This nice hike ascends to an old fire lookout atop a shoulder of Apgar Mountain with partially obstructed birds-eye-views of the Lake McDonald area.

The view to the northeast from the summit of Apgar Mountain provides a spectacular view of Lake McDonald and the mountains in the distance. To the left of the lake are Stanton Mountain and Mt. Vaught and then just to the right the Garden Wall. The Continental Divide follows the crest of the Garden Wall. Continuing to the right are Mt. Cannon and Mt. Brown. The last mountain clearly visible to the right is Edwards Mountain.

Distance: 7.2 miles (roundtrip)
Elevation: 3,356-ft. at Trailhead
Maximum elevation: 5,236-ft.
Elevation Gain: 1,880-ft.
Difficulty: moderate

Your perfect 2024 family vacation awaits you in Glacier National Park, especially if your family loves to hike! Here's a sample itinerary to get you started:

Day 1: Arrival in Glacier National Park
- Arrive at Glacier Park International Airport in Kalispell, Montana.
- Check into your accommodation. We recommend Grouse Mountain Lodge!
- Relax and acclimate to the higher elevation.

Day 2: Explore Whitefish
- Enjoy breakfast in Whitefish.
- Visit the Whitefish Mountain Resort and hike the Danny On trail to the top of the mountain.
- Stroll around the charming downtown area and return for dinner at Logan's Bar and Grill.

Day 3: Apgar Village and Lake McDonald
- Drive to Apgar Village, the west entrance to the park.
- Hike the Trail of the Cedars, a short and easy nature trail.
- Spend the afternoon at Lake McDonald, with options for boat rentals or swimming.
- Check into overnight accommodation near West Glacier such as Apgar Village Lodge & Cabins or Motel Lake McDonald.

Day 4: Going-to-the-Sun Road
- Start early and drive the iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road, making several stops along the way.
- Consider a hike to Hidden Lake Overlook or on Highline Trail.
- Continue to St. Mary Village for overnight accommodation.

Day 5: St. Mary and Many Glacier
- Explore St. Mary and have breakfast.
- Hike the beautiful Grinnell Glacier Trail or Red Rock Falls.
- In the afternoon, drive to Many Glacier and check into your accommodation.
- Enjoy a relaxing evening by the Swiftcurrent Lake.

Day 6: Many Glacier
- Spend the day exploring Many Glacier.
- Hike the Iceberg Lake Trail or take a boat tour on Swiftcurrent Lake.
- Consider a side trip to Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada if you have your passport.
- Return to your Many Glacier accommodation for the night or stay in Waterton Lakes at the Prince of Wales Hotel.

Day 7: Two Medicine Valley
- Drive to Two Medicine Valley in the southern part of Glacier National Park.
- Hike to Upper Two Medicine Lake or No Name Lake.
- Enjoy the peaceful surroundings and stunning scenery.
- Return to your lodging in the St. Mary area for your final night in the park. We recommend Glacier Park Lodge.

Day 8: Departure
- Depart from Glacier Park International Airport in Kalispell, Montana.
- Treasure your Glacier memories for a lifetime!
