We are heartbroken to share the news that GFK Grad, Pretty Penny, went over the rainbow bridge a few days ago. She was one of the most easy-going foster girls we have ever had. Her family loved her deeply and she has left a large hole in their hearts. Thank you to Penny’s family for giving her a loving home for all these years 🙏🏻♥️. We love you Penny and you will always be tucked away in our hearts forever. Rest easily sweet girl 🌈♥️🐾

Leo has been placed with Pound Hounds ResQ

Leo will be on the list tonight, please start sharing this sweet, wiggly puppy NOW for a home!

This puppy is a little wiggleworm! LEO is incredibly sweet, friendly and outgoing with everyone he meets, and that includes the intake staff and the medical team on the day he arrived. His parent was moving to new housing where they could not take Leo, and had nothing but glowing things to say about the dog they had to leave behind. Leo lived with 2 children and one of the things his parent stressed was just how good he was with children. He was playful and friendly with them, though because of his age a bit rough when he played. He was also friendly and outgoing with strangers, and that has proven true! Well behaved, a good boy, a family pet. Now he is all alone. And realizing he is all alone after the door slammed behind the parent he loved, he is overwhelmed in the shelter environment. This is not uncommon, and poor Leo just wants to go home. He doesn’t know why his family is not with him or coming back for him, but he does know he is lonely, sad and heartbroken and stuck in a “box” for almost every hour of every day when he should be playing with his toys, or snuggling with the people he loves. Now he is on the list to die, and that just cannot happen. We need you to share this good, sweet puppy far and wide for a new family who will never leave him again. He deserves nothing less than every happiness. MESSAGE OUR PAGE for assistance fostering or adopting Leo and save his life.

A VOLUNTEER WRITES:
"Leo is a gremlin, both figuratively and literally. I mean, I don’t know how else to describe that smush face, his bottom grill constantly peeking out of his mouth and his little corn chip ears. And there’s no other way to illustrate how he eats, and even more-how he sounds, when he chomps on treats! When Leo plays, he requests that you be involved too-bringing me the toy and dropping it at my feet. He’s absolutely ridiculous and I love him!

Leo was surrendered due to a family move out of state. He is reported to be playful and sweet with the kids he lived with. He loves any types of treats and balls and stuffies. He understands the cues sit, come and down in Spanish. His favorite thing to do is “play with the kids on the patio.” Leo doesn’t have any experience with other dogs in his former home and was not dog tested in the shelter. Due to some fearfulness when he arrived, Leo was not a candidate for a handling assessment. For this reason, and stress in the shelter, Leo is at risk for euthanasia. If you can foster Leo, fill out the prescreener form in our bio. Leo is 1 year old, 45 pounds and his ID is #213374 ."

LEO, # 213374, 1 Yr. Old, 45 lbs., Male
Queens Island ACC, Medium Mixed Breed, Black/White
Owner Surrender Reason: 11/4/2024 – Housing Issues
Shelter Assessment Rating: New Hope Only
Recommendations:
No Children under Age 13
Place with a New Hope Partner
Medical Behavior Rating: 1. GREEN.

AT RISK MEMO:

Leo is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Leo has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and is only allowing for minimal handling. Leo is tense and uncomfortable during interactions and has not allowed for collaring. He also displays a concerning level of arousal - fixating on scents or handlers' feet and is now leash biting to a concerning degree. He is becoming difficult to remove from the kennel and once out of the kennel due to his leash biting. He does not take treats or toys reliably as a result of his arousal, which has made refocusing him difficult, causing him to get loose from handlers' lead. Medically, Leo has CIRDC, chronic ear infection, and is Brachycephalic.

Leo came into the care center as an owner due to housing troubles. In the prior home home Leo was reported to be sweet and playful with the familiar children in the home. Leo knows cues in Spanish like sit, come, and down. In the care center, Leo has displayed fearful behavior avoiding handling and displaying a tense body with whale eyes. Due to this Leo is available for rescue through one of our new hope partners.

PLAYGROUP NOTES – DOG TO DOG SUMMARY:
FUN FACTS:

ENRICHMENT NOTES

11/19/24 (AM) Leo greets the handler lying down in the back of his kennel. The handler toss in treats which gets Leo out. The handler presents Leo a toy at the door during leashing. Leo takes the toy from the handler but immediately drops it next to him taking no interest. The handler attempts to leash but Leo avoids the leash weaving his head around with his paw up. Leo is leashed and escorted out of his his kennel. When walking Leo takes interest into another toy on the walk. He picks it and ten proceeds to drop it again. When the handler goes to pick up the toy Leo bites on to the leash and begins pulling. The handler attempts to tighten the lead but Leo heads whips out. The handler guides Leo with the leash back before using a secondary leash to leash Leo. After Leo is leased, Leo is escorted back to his kennel where he drops the leash before entering. Leo is unleashed and secured without issue.

11/18: ACS staff told a handler as they were setting up musical enrichment that Leo is getting hard to remove from the kennel due to his leash biting. However, this morning when they were able to leash him after several attempts, Leo got loose due to his leashing. He was able to slip out of the lead, but the ACS staff were able to quickly catch him.

11/17: ACS staff report that Leo has displayed multiple episodes of leash biting once out of his kennel; including when off-leash in the yard. Leo is reported to jump up non-stop and bite at leads or PPE, tearing them. When putting him back in his kennel, he will bite and pull on their leads, pulling them into his kennel, and biting and shaking them.

11/10: A handler enters the room to put up kennel signage on a dog when Leo sees them enter. He immediately begins hard barking at the handler and rushes the kennel door, muzzling punching the bars as they walk past him.

11/05/24 (late entry): Leo is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease to the Canine Behavior Office. Leo becomes slightly tense and avoidant as handlers attempt to leash him. Due to his discomfort, a Behavior Assessment is not attempted at this time. Leo is returned to kennel safely.

Recommendations:
No children (under 13)
Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:

No children (under 13)- Due to Leo's potential challenges we recommend he be placed in an adult-only home at this time.

Place with a New Hope partner- Leo came into the care center as an owner due to housing troubles.

Potential challenges:
Fearful
Kennel presence

Potential challenges comments:

Fearful-To help Leo overcome his fearfulness, use gradual desensitization and positive reinforcement. Identify the specific triggers that cause him fear and introduce them at a low intensity while pairing them with high-value treats. Gradually increase the intensity of the trigger while ensuring Leo remains comfortable. This process will help him build positive associations with previously fearful stimuli. Always allow Leo to approach new situations at his own pace, and never force him into uncomfortable situations. Using a calm and patient approach will help reduce his fearfulness and build his confidence. Please see the handout on decompression fearfulness.

Kennel presence- Leo is reported to hard bark, muzzle punch at handlers walking pass his kennel.

Gentle giant Pete is looking for a forever family. Please share!

*** PLACED WITH RESCUE ***

If ever there was a dog that needed a friend, it’s PETE. A diverted intake, he is now at the shelter because his parent said “I’ve just started a new career and am working an excessive amount of hours so I can no longer manage him.” Well maybe you should have thought of that when you took the job? Pete has only been at the shelter for FIVE DAYS. We all know that Cane Corso’s are devoted companions to the people they love. They give over their hearts, their souls and every bit of their being to love and look out for their families, so we can only imagine how lacerated and confused Pete is feeling in the shelter, searching every face for the faithless human who dumped him there. Right now he is frightened and lost, afraid to trust or give his heart away. This is how Cane Corso’s are when they are displaced. Pete lived with a child who is now 8 and loved that kid. He is good with dogs he knows and avoids those he doesn’t. Pete was a no issue family pet with a brilliant resume who loved nothing better than to quietly lay around the house or in his backyard, chewing on bones and pigs ears, and who loved bath time and water. He pulls very little on leash, is housetrained and never has accidents, and was crate trained up to 10 hours. His family loved how gentle and protective Pete was with his family. What is not to love about Pete? If his amazing good looks don’t send your heart fluttering, his quiet goodness will. Please help this displaced boy find his smile again. Please consider giving this certified good boy a home. Experienced large dog fosters or adopters, MESSAGE OUR PAGE for assistance.

PETE, ID # 203789, 3 Yrs. Old, 129.2 lbs., Male
Manhattan ACC, Large Breed (Cane Corso), Gray
Owner Surrender Reason: 8/7/24 - New Career/No time
Behavior Assessment Rating: New Hope Only
No Children under Age 13
Medical Behavior Rating:

AT RISK MEMO:
Pete is currently at risk due to behavioral concerns. Initially, Pete was unable to be safely handled due to lunging, barking and snapping at handlers while in kennel. He has since warmed up, taking treats from handlers gently but avoids leashing, retreating to the back of the kennel. Medically, Pete has otitis externa and CIRDC.

Pete was reported by his owner to be tolerant of strangers, children and dogs.
In the Care Centers, Pete has shown significant warning behaviors, including lunging, snapping, and snarling, particularly when he's in a crate or kennel. He is highly fearful but has shown some interest in food; he will approach the front of his kennel for it, though he quickly retreats. In his previous home, he was described as a couch potato and knew commands like sit and down. Pete will need an experienced foster and adopter through a New Hope partner that can engage in positive reinforcement reward-based training to address these challenges.

PLAYGROUP NOTES – DOG TO DOG SUMMARY:
FUN FACTS:

ENRICHMENT NOTES

8/11/24: Pete is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body. He takes high value treats (chicken) gently. As the handlers unlock the kennel and presents the leash he backs away. He dodges, ducks, and shakes the leash off multiple times. He reapproaches for chicken when the leash is removed. He continues to dodge the leash persistently and stops taking chicken. Eventually one of the handlers is able to get the leash over his head. When the kennel door is opened he stands and does not exit the kennel. He cannot be coaxed forwards with treats, toys, or squeakers and has to be muscled out of the kennel. He is taken to the backyard where he pulls very hard, sniffs, and relieves himself immediately. He is taken into a pen where he continues to sniff and explore with a neutral body. He takes some treats outside and spits out others. He approaches handlers with a soft body and wagging tail when they speak to him in a high pitched voice. Whenever he wants to sniff something or move in a specific direction he pulls very hard, making it difficult for the handlers to maneuver him. On the way inside he balks in the hallway and is difficult to move forwards. He cannot be lured and has to be muscled throughout the hallway and back into the kennel with significant effort.

8/10/24: Pete is standing at the front with neutral body. Handler speaks to him in a high pitched voice and offers a treat. He takes the treat gently and wags his nub. Handler presents the leash and Pete moves away. Handler continues to offer treats with the leash present and eventually through the loop. After a few rounds of this, Pete is sticking his head through the loop to take the treat but quickly removing it. A handful of treats are tossed and alot of praise before interaction is ceased.

8/8/24: When a staff member approached his kennel with high value items, Pete charges the front growling and snapping.

INTAKE BEHAVIOR:
Date of intake: 8-Aug-2024
Summary: Growling and hard barking

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Date of initial: 8-Aug-2024
Summary: Growling and hard barking

ENERGY LEVEL:
Pete is described as a medium energy level dog. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Pete.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: During Pete's initial transport, Pete became defensive-lunging, snapping and snarling at staff when they approached his crate. He calmed down when they walked away.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: New Hope Only

Recommendations:
No children (under 13)
Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:

No children (under 13): Pete should go to home with older children due to his escalation of lunging when uncomfortable.

Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in the Care Center environment, the behavior department recommends Pete be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Pete to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Pete to new and unfamiliar situations.

Potential challenges:
Resource guarding
Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:

Resource guarding: Pete is noted to tense up and hover over toys and treats. Positive reinforcement should be used to teach him the trade game. Please see the handout on Resource Guarding

Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: In the Care Centers, Pete was observed to escalate to lunging, snarling and hard barking while in a crate. He would calmed down when staff walked away. In his previous home, Pete would bark and growl if startled. Positive reinforcement should be used to help Pete manage his behavior. Please see the handouts on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression and On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
