If you are hiding your Valentine’s Day sweets, make sure they are out of your pet’s reach!

Chocolate contains theobromine which if consumed by your dog, can overstimulate their nervous system and can be fatal. Leading up to this special day, we love to remind our dedicated pet parents why keeping chocolate out of reach of dogs is so important.

This Valentine's Day, and all days, we encourage safe chocolate hiding spaces in your house that your pet can’t reach and celebrating your love for them with pet-safe treats!

Fun Fact! Did you know that cats started vocalizing to communicate with their humans? Aside from a mother cat meowing to signal to her kittens, the vocalizing of cat’s is purely for us humans! Further confirmation of the incredible bond we share with our feline friends.

We know dogs’ noses are wet, but do most people really know why? Your best friend has a wet nose to further enhance their incredible scent capabilities. With a wet nose your pup can better absorb scent chemicals.

You can give your dog time to utilize this great strength of theirs by slowing down a bit on your walks to let them sniff every interesting smell. This allows you both time to enjoy your walk and provides your furry family member with some great enrichment!

In honor of National Train Your Dog month, here are some more helpful tips when training your best friend!

1. A little each day goes a long way – Training can be a lot of mental work for your pet – to stay consistent, practice for just a few minutes each day!

2. Find a reward that works – along with positive reinforcement – if there is a high value toy or a reward your dog gets particularly excited for, use that while training to celebrate the little wins!

3. Celebrate the small wins – approach your pet’s training in small steps – reward good behaviors like sitting when asked or being calm when it’s appropriate. These are great opportunities to praise your pet and help them associate this reward with their good behavior.

Many dogs love having jobs, pleasing their owners and taking commands, so being obedient can be very rewarding for them. If your dog is showing progress, pat them and yourself on the back for all the hard work!

1. Positive reinforcement goes a long way– Your dog learns from praise and positive encouragement. If your pet is behaving well, let them know by praise!

2. Exercise is paramount - Be sure to incorporate walks, trips to the park and frequent activities outside of the backyard where your dog can stretch their legs, explore, use their nose, and socialize.

3. Be consistent – Working with your pet on their behavior takes commitment, and we know it’s not easy. Try your best to continue your training habits to see success!

Tis the season! Here are some additional safety tips to be mindful of when decorating for the holidays:

-Holly Berries: These berries are toxic to both pets and children. Even if you display them in an area your pet can’t reach, the berries tend to dry and fall off their branches, making them easy for anyone to scoop up.

-Ribbon/Gift wrap: Like tinsel, ribbon and gift wrap can be very intriguing to our animals but also very dangerous if digested and should always be kept out of reach.

-Snow globes: The liquid in snow globes can be highly toxic to animals. Be sure to keep your snow globes in areas where they won’t be easily knocked over or broken!

Holiday season brings a lot of new and festive décor to the home. Here are some items to look out for to keep your furry friends safe:

-Tinsel: Like any string, if tinsel is digested by your pet, it can be very dangerous and cause an obstruction that can require surgery.

-Chocolate: Bakers’ chocolate, dark chocolate and semi-sweet chocolate tend to be the most dangerous types of chocolate for pets. Chocolate contains ingredients which can cause central nervous system dysfunction and heart issues. Though some chocolates contain less of these ingredients than others, all chocolate is considered toxic and should be kept away from our pets. If you think your pet has ingested chocolate, do not wait and call us immediately!

-Imitation Snow: If you have flocking or imitation snow on your tree, make sure it is out of reach for your pet as it can be harmful if digested.

-Tree preservatives: If you are using tree preservatives, ensure that your pet doesn’t have access to the tree water as this could be very toxic to them!
