Marty, the yearling, got to learn all sorts of things while trail riding in a group. He also helped some of his trail-mates get comfortable with another horse running up behind you AND then running by, AND MAYBE, even throwing a kick at a trail- mate. As you might imagine, MONA was NOT amused. Marty did enjoy the progressive dinner part of the ride. It was a great evening to ride!

Marty, alone, for the first time in his life. He was quite surprised when he got his own grain, and didn't have to share with mom or Shadow.

Well, Happy Holidays, everyone! We survived Elliot, but am not looking forward to anymore big winter storms. I'm so glad to report all the horses are doing fine. We had to blanket Willow; she was the only one shivering at -25 degrees. They were all so happy to get out and run this morning. It was too cold to take photos. Maybe I'll stand upstairs and take photos out the window. I'M SO GRATEFUL FOR THE EXTRA HELP I'VE HAD TAKING CARE OF 20 HORSES. I COULDN'T DO IT ON MY OWN! If you see Ben&Juliet, or Tim&Lynn, be sure to thank them! They made it possible to maintain quality care through this challenge.

Marty added one more member to his herd, Cash. Uncle Shadow was calling for him and Willow, as Shadow was the first one to go out this morning. Shadow has a very distinctive neigh. All went well, and they even behaved as we went to bring them in during the thunderstorm this evening. We shut the front gate, caught Shadow, and opened the pasture gate, so the other three could follow us up to the barn and into shelter. With the rain pouring down, lightening, and very gusty wind, it all went according to plan. Got soaked getting the others in....but with the quick temp drop, we figured they'd appreciate being dry.

11/09/2022

The 3 black&whites finally got some pasture time. I was a little worried little Marty wouldn't figure out our "cobble gates" fence arrangement. Uncle Shadow kept him safe, and they all enjoyed munching some not so green grass.

We have a new horse here, with a first time horse owner. Flicka arrived on a big horse van, that bravely parked out on the highway, and unloaded her. She took it all in stride, and followed me quietly down the driveway, in the dark, as Hal followed me up the driveway to the arena. Interested in the friendly inquiries from the other horses, she was not anxious about being in a new place. Her previous life was as a surrogate mom for expensive babies, while their real moms went on to do more important things(?). She is isolated in the arena in her own stall suite. Tomorrow we will find out what she knows. Welcome, Shalar, and Flicka to NHES. Many years of happy trails to them both.

Yesterday was a tough day, when one of our boarders had to let their faithful and steady companion go "over the bridge" .
It just took the sunshine out of the day for all of us.
Today, the others gathered round, offering condolences, and it helped me: to be glad we have so many caring people here. This is why we board and share our horses and knowledge with others! Thanks for hearing me out! WE ARE BLESSED!

A short trail ride at home yesterday. How the weather changed in one day!
And Adiana is riding again, but on a different horse, Shadow, until she gets her mobility back. Joining the group was Gabbie on BLU. Ben is giving Larry a tune up ride and Juliet is teamed up with Boogie, and Mona is serving as a partner for one of our lesson rider, Melinda.

Thanks Lynn Volkl, for having a day off on such a marvelous fall day.

Enjoying watching Marty thrive. With luck, he'll have a little brother or sister next year. The ultrasound was a positive. Juliet was going to post it, but I haven't checked yet, to see if she did.

Willow and Marty meet a new friend, Shadow. I'm hoping when it comes time to wean, Shadow can be the kind uncle-babysitter.

The first day, with our new family, consisted of finding a baby halter, and the first lesson in leading. Mom was great about the new surroundings so, reassured her son that we were no weirder than any other human she had met. The mare's name is Willow, which I think fits her, for whatever reason, but the youngster needs a name. These are names put forth so far; AJ, (for Applejack), and staying with the tree theme, Ashe and Oakie, or with the movie theme from Willow, Madmaddigan or M&M. Therefore, YOU, our followers, can voice your opinions, or add to our confusion with more ideas.

THE REST OF THE STORY: THEN, in my empathetic mind, I noted that the 2 month old foal and his mother had seperate sale numbers. Meaning they could possibly go to separate homes, with him orphaned at 2 months old, which, of course is way to young. So, I was determined to be a martyr and rescue the pair (and egged on by many friends and FAMILY MEMBERS * You know who you are!*). So at the butt crack of dawn on Labor Day, the whole family ,that resides at NHES, plus a few of our staunch supporters, proceeded to the sale barn(accompanied by the biggest horse trailer we own). And this is how we got sucked in.

Well, NHES has added another chapter to our adventures. As the last few years have come and gone, Hal and I have contemplated how old we are, and how old our favorite mounts are, and we were pretty sure we would both need one more horse(please, don't tell Mona and Larry). And all of our life together, we have been blessed with things falling into our lives at exactly the right time.
So last week, when Ben's fiance, Juliet, showed us the sale catalog for the Labor Day auction at Kalona (the place I tell everyone never to go to to buy a horse), and after I cussed her out for tempting me, I, of course, looked at the flyer, and saw this photo.

Ares thought he was pretty special since he got to lead the ride. Ally did a good job of keeping him under control.

If you want to see an event most of us don't get a chance to witness in real life, check out the Three Day Event taking place at Catalpa Corners near Oasis, Iowa tomorrow. Dressage, stadium jumping and an extraordinary Cross Country course. Normally these horses would attempt these athletic events over three days, but all three will be completed in a day. A unusual opportunity for all horse lovers to witness. No fee to observe, just a day to enjoy and learn. Check out Catalpa Corners on FB for directions. I believe the first riders begin about 7am, and will be taking place all day.

Hopefully, a few more photos from camp will get posted now. It was a phenomenal week with lots of fun and new friend made. Forgive me if I post duplicates, but who doesn't like to see photos of themselves?

Some how my posts from the rest of the camp week did not get posted. So hopefully, if I do it in smaller bits, it will go through. Where is Steve Piatak when you need him?

A successful day three of camp. These kids create so much fun! Horses and water! Who knew? Photos and videos to follow.
