Everyone meet Savannah aka Banana! Savannah was a rescue and is a 2 year old mix with a rat terrier, chihuahua, American pit bull terrier, beagle, and Russell terrier in her! When I started caring for them around January 5th we had a great first visit, she wasn’t scared like she normally would be, she didn’t hide or bark at me either which is something she typically would do. Then we had a little setback around our third visit, Savannah wouldn’t even let me go near her, and if I started coming in her direction she ran the other way… so at the next visit, I suggested maybe 2 visits a week would help Savannah learn I’m not a scary, mean person and that she can trust me. So we are continuing by doing two visits per week and started doing some positive reinforcement to help her learn I am her friend. She has already come a long way and she finally is letting me pet her and love on her.
When working with nervous or anxious dogs you need to take your time and be extremely patient. Rushing anything will only be a recipe for disaster. It’s always okay to ask the owner for any tips or tricks, so don’t be afraid. You’re better off knowing than not knowing!
