West Milford Animal Shelter Society (WMASS) is a non-profit humane org, our purpose is to help the homeless animals who enter our door and promote through direct action & education, the welfare of companion animals. It was formed in 1976 out of a desperate need to establish an adoption program at the West Milford Animal Shelter, a municipal facility. Many cats and dogs arrive annually, seeking she
lter, love, attention, and veterinary care from the WMASS. The WMASS also shelters other domestic animals, including rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, chinchillas, and birds, as well as injured or orphaned, young wildlife. At any point in time, the shelter houses between 50-100 cats/kittens and about 12 dogs. Volunteers are always needed! Just a few hours a week can make a huge difference in the lives of these homeless animals. Volunteers donate a lot of time and effort. It’s hard work...but the rewards of getting a lot of bright eyes, love and happy tails make it all worthwhile. The shelter is open Monday - Friday 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, Wednesday evening 7:30 - 9:00 pm and Saturday/Sunday 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. They can be reached at 973-728-2859.

August 17 is National Black Cat Appreciation Day!
This day is meant to recognize that black cats are just as playful, adorable, and deserving of love as any other cat. It’s rather important as it helps overcome the negative associations some people have with them, especially around Halloween. They are not unlucky nor a bad omen!
Here are some beautiful black cats that have been adopted from the shelter and our current black cat residents, Onyx and Rocky!

Tickets are only $10 per dog, and all the money goes towards the West Milford Animal Shelter. You're supporting us as we help the animals in our care find their furever home.
Tickets can be purchased at the shelter during our open hours, from a volunteer, or the day of the event.

Senior Saturday: Onyx! He is 9 years old
Onyx is a sunbathing beauty. This handsome boy, no matter how hot, regardless of the humidity, will be lying in the sun. He absolutely loves it. He’s like a solar panel, the sun charges him up! You can find him in the outdoor section of the Big Cattery, where he spends the majority of his time.
Onyx does great with other cats. He’s a gentle giant (twelve pounds!) and interacts very well with small children. If you’re looking to adopt a mellow and easy-going senior cat, your search may have just come to an end. Onyx might be the perfect match for you!

What an awesome treat our pups got by two volunteers yesterday!! Bath Time!! You can certainly see what a fun time they all had... smiles all around... licks & treats too! In order, Axel, showing off pretty smiles in pink; Camden, treats and keep scratchin' my back; Duke, gives licks and lets play ball; Penny, wiggly butt where's my head girl.... If you're planning on coming to meet our pups today, they will be smellin' lovely! We've got a great group of dogos to visit! Our volunteers aren't half bad either!!

He's the last of the basket pigs. Willow was one of the guinea pigs found on the side of a road in a picnic basket, abandoned.
He's been with us since a good Samaritan found the basket and brought the piggies to us.
Tuesday was his one year anniversary with us... an anniversary that we never like to celebrate here at the shelter.
Today, Willow had a meet and greet with another boar (male piggie).
And today, Willow went home with his new brother.
One year and two days later.
Willow... ADOPTED!

Fun Cat Fact Friday: Did you know that all cats’ “nose prints” are entirely unique?
Every cat’s nose has its own specific pattern of ridges and bumps. Just like human fingerprints, no two cat “nose prints” are the same! So next time you boop your cat’s nose, know it’s special like no other.
Our girl Stella here, her nose is pretty stellar! It’s shaped like a heart and makes her truly adorable. It suits her really well, too. She’s such a love bug! She’ll hop right out of her cage and into your arms. She’s so snuggly.
Stella is 5 years old and has been with us for a little over two weeks now. She’s spayed, up-to-date on vaccines, and ready to go! She can be adopted to a home that does not have big dogs or other cats. Stella says that you must have a lap she can sit on, though, that’s her requirement. Deal?

Throwback Thursday: Emmylou!
Who remembers this sweet girl from July 2018?
She was one of five kittens in the Sock Puppet Litter, who were all named after Country Music Television stars. While her shelter stay was only around two months long, she was the last kitten of her litter to be adopted. Her adopters saw her all alone in her cage and couldn’t resist!
Now called Mimi, she lives the life of luxury. She’s showered with fuzzy blankets, treats, and more toys than you could imagine! Her favorite color is said to be blue, as her family always finds her relaxing on the blue blankets lying around the house. Mimi also loves the cubby of the TV cabinet. She climbs on in like it’s a cozy cave!
Mimi’s family keeps the newspaper article that advertised her pinned on their wall. She is so loved and always will be!
Ready for another kitten? Meet Finch!
Finch is another one of the Mockingbird Kittens that came to us a few weeks ago without a mother cat. He was the most scaredy one of all, the last one out of three that we were able to get our hands on. But now he’s so brave! He allows petting if you go slow and talk to him. And he purrs! He can’t even hide the fact that he enjoys people.
His tabby stripes make him look like a tiger, and he sure runs around like one. When he finds a toy he likes, he has super speed! He’ll get the zoomies and run around his cage with Atticus, his brother. He’s so funny. Can you handle kitten energy?

Welcoming Wednesday: This week we welcomed Dobby to our Big Cattery!
You may think Dobby could be around three or four years old due to how well-kept he looks, but you’d have to add another decade to that. This beautiful boy will be turning 14 in exactly one month from now, on September 14th! And don’t worry, we’re going to celebrate him. Extra pets, treats, and hugs will be a part of his birthday party.
Dobby has been settling into the Big Cattery the past two nights, and so far his favorite spot to sit is on top of the enclosure inside. However, he doesn’t mind being held and will sit on your lap too! He’s really chill and is a “go with the flow” kind of guy. Dobby does well with other cats, dogs, and children, so his housing options are pretty open. We’re hoping he can find a wonderful home soon to relax in for the rest of his senior years!

Atticus is waiting to meet you!
He's one of the Mockingbird Kittens that came in several weeks ago without a mama cat.
We jokingly called him "The Hisser". It was his immediate reaction when we opened his cage door (or just walked by). But in all fairness, if you had all these new people (volunteers) coming at you, moving things around in your apartment, and trying to touch you, wouldn't you hiss, too?
But for all his hissing, he was the first one to stay still and allow petting! He's so brave now, and does well meeting new people!
He's all up-to-date on vaccines and is looking for his new family. (All vaccines that are age appropriate - no rabies vax yet, but your vet will do that when you have him neutered.)
Please remember that we never adopt same day. We always choose the best fit for the kitten. If we have more than one application for him, it will take some time and decision making to choose his new family.
We also like potential adopters to have a night to sleep on it before making such a big decision!

Tabby Tuesday: Meet Goose! 🪿
This boy is a bundle of energy, he’ll meow all day for attention and pets! Goose is about 2 years old and loves people. He’s not hard to become friends with, but if you really want to win him over, scratch under his chin! That’s his favorite spot.
Goose’s brown and black stripes have him looking more than handsome, and pair that up with his charming personality? It’s no doubt that his stay with us will be short. Fill out an application for him before he’s scooped up!

Is it a happy one year anniversary? Today Willow is with us for a year. He is approx. 2 yrs old now at the shelter. All of his littermates, the beautiful multicolored piggies, have gone home. He will get extra tlc today from the volunteers but his wish if he had a cake with candles to blow out would be to have a home of his own.... Willow enjoys being pet and is fine being held. He's comfortable in his own fur... meaning he's just adorable and sweet, not a stressed scared guy. Do you know someone who would be a great best friend for Willow? Have them stop by!

this is really happy news!! Tiskit who was part of a group of Guinea pigs that were left
discarded in the parking lot of a local firehouse almost a year ago!!! Has now been ADOPTED! Wow, we're all smiling along with Tiskits new owner! Have a great life buddy.
We're so very happy for Cindy Lou! Yesterday was her special day: ADOPTED! She's now home to be loved and have a fun life! Such a beauty, who was also a great momma to 5 female kittens... Have a wonderful life Cindy Lou! We will miss you but are so happy you're out of the shelter. Be a good girl and hope to get updates!

Pretty Penny is such a goof ball, fun, playful (3 y/o) pitty mix... she's sassy with charm! You can't help but smile and laugh when in her presence! She would be ok with another dog. Senior Saturday: Meet Lucky! He is 10 years old
Lucky’s life turned upside down when he came to us. His longtime owner was unable to care for him and just prior to that, his own cat brother passed away. He was very withdrawn and depressed.
We’ve had him for about six weeks now. And slowly but surely, he’s become more lively. He’s always allowed petting, but now he doesn’t tense up as much when you place your hand on him. We’ve heard his first “meow” and his eyes have more brightness in them. He resides in our Library Cattery with Sandy, and we’ve seen his legs stretched out! He walks around and will nibble on dry food in front of us.
Knowing Lucky has lived with another cat for the majority of his life, he would do best in a home with a cat companion. Preferably a senior or calmer cat. Putting him in the cattery with Sandy, who is 11 years old, has helped him tremendously! He needs a slow-paced, quiet household with an owner who will spend quality time with him. Someone who understands that some cats need more time than others to come out of their shell. If these factors line up with you, please contact us! Lucky will be waiting.
What do our pups do on tropical rainy days if conditions don’t allow outside play - chill, play and observe from inside with volunteers!
Fun Cat Fact Friday: Did you know that cats’ whiskers help them move around at night?
Cats have better night vision than humans, but their whiskers also aid them with maneuvering around in the dark. Cats’ whiskers will pick up on certain air currents based on where objects are located nearby, and then send signals to their brain to tell them their exact placement.
Then just like that, they’re able to have perfect nighttime navigation! Pretty cool right? So along with night vision, whiskers allow cats to prance around almost flawlessly in the dark. They don’t even need a flashlight!💡

Throwback Thursday: Sunshine!
Who remembers this big orange boy from last August and September? He was our office cat for a short while before getting adopted. Always such a good boy.
Still called Sunshine, he’s been living his best life in his own house. He patrols the squirrels and chipmunks from his sliding patio door and watches the neighbor’s chickens from the window. He’s claimed a specific leather chair in the house and if someone else sits there, he’ll give them stink eye until they give up their seat. I mean, how dare someone try and sit in his spot?
He’s a big sunbather, hence his name Sunshine. His favorite spot to do so is on his cat tower. He’s a big fan of catnip, his toys, and Churu treats too. Sunshine also has his humans trained pretty well. In the morning, he’ll purr extra loud on his father’s side of the bed to wake him up and let him know it’s time for breakfast! What a funny guy.
Sunshine really hit the jackpot with his newfound family. It’s what we love to see at the shelter! If you can't volunteer or adopt, would you think about donating or sharing our posts? Anything is appreciated, and every little bit counts. That’s what makes stories like Sunshine’s possible!

So this happened… we found out that Storm loves frisbee!! This beautiful black and white 7 y/o Lab mix loves playing with people…. He's sweet, friendly and enjoys being pet and get belly rubs. He can be adopted to a family with children 7+ years of age. Storm is in need of his own home.. . Do you know how we can tell? He becomes a paperweight when it's time to go back into his kennel. He doesn’t want to go in there. He does and is fine but it breaks our hearts when we see something like that. He’s such a good boy. Storm is going to be someone’s best friend! Might that be you? Or someone you know! Come visit him!
Meet the mighty Thor! He’s a 9 year old Dachsund - Pittie mix! He's a friendly boy who loves petting and playing! Thor is okay with most dogs and lived with one of his siblings for his whole life. We don't know about cats. Come meet this sweet boy. Maybe your home is the one he settles into during his golden years. We can send him home with his favorite red toy too!

Rosie here…. I think he’s (yes he!) trying to tell us something… He is really tired of living in a small cage in an animal shelter. 🙁😏 Either that or he just loves to redecorate his cage!! But truly, he’s a great bunny affectionate, fun, entertaining and really needs a new loving home. He is an eight month old bunny, came to us a few months ago. We’re open this evening from 7:30PM to 9!! Stop in to meet her and our other beautiful bunnies as well. Plus Willow and Tiskit, our two cool guinea pigs.
Brownie!! a beautiful, friendly, young female bunny. She was eight months old when she came to us a number of months back. She’ll snuggle in your arms for a few minutes and except gentle petting.
