West Milford Animal Shelter Society (WMASS) is a non-profit humane org, our purpose is to help the homeless animals who enter our door and promote through direct action & education, the welfare of companion animals. It was formed in 1976 out of a desperate need to establish an adoption program at the West Milford Animal Shelter, a municipal facility. Many cats and dogs arrive annually, seeking she

lter, love, attention, and veterinary care from the WMASS. The WMASS also shelters other domestic animals, including rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, chinchillas, and birds, as well as injured or orphaned, young wildlife. At any point in time, the shelter houses between 50-100 cats/kittens and about 12 dogs. Volunteers are always needed! Just a few hours a week can make a huge difference in the lives of these homeless animals. Volunteers donate a lot of time and effort. It’s hard work...but the rewards of getting a lot of bright eyes, love and happy tails make it all worthwhile. The shelter is open Monday - Friday 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, Wednesday evening 7:30 - 9:00 pm and Saturday/Sunday 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. They can be reached at 973-728-2859.

Good morning! ☀️

Gypsy loves to hang out in the outdoor section of the Middle Cattery even on the most chilly mornings. We think she finds it refreshing! She usually curls up in a spot with some direct sunlight and takes a nap after her breakfast. The life of a cat!

She’s watched many cats cycle in and out of the shelter, majority who have come in after her and been adopted before her. Gypsy hasn’t had any potential adopters in months, but we reassure her that her day will come soon. Feel free to come visit her, even if you aren’t planning on adopting! She would enjoy your company regardless.

Rocky’s taking his turn as our office cat and he’s settled in well. He loves all the attention he gets from visitors and he sniffs through all of our donations. He has to approve of them, of course! He’ll try out the new beds and is the first one to play with the new toys. For 13 years old, he can be very athletic.

The best home for Rocky would be one without other cats and dogs. He doesn’t do well with either and prefers to be the only animal in a household. He wants to be king of the castle! For now he can be the king of our lobby, which isn’t too bad of a deal. Rocky is very well-loved by us!

If you have interest in him, come in and fill out a pre-adopt form. Tomorrow we’ll be open from 10am to 3pm!

Happy Saturday from Angus!

He’s very excited for the weekend because we’re open for two additional hours in comparison to weekdays. And that means he’ll get more visitors!

Angus is 4.5 years old and was brought to us when his owner had to downsize. He lived with numerous other cats and was a little nervous around them; however, he would do okay with just one or two in a home. He’s independent and minds his own business, and would be fine with a feline companion who does the same.

He’s a fan of sitting on laps and can be picked up to do so. He also loves belly rubs and he’s got quite the beefy belly to pet! Come see it for yourself.

Do I get off… do I stay on…? Off the bed- on the bed… such a hard decision! Well at least the volunteers are hanging out with me for a littl’ while. And you have to admit I have a beautiful smile!

Enjoy a couple more pics of our Xena.

01/10/2025

Keeping our guests’ minds & bodies active is just another way our volunteers show them love! Xena here is approximately three years old and is funny, active, and enjoys being pet. She’s a playful pup. She may be OK with another dog, it seems like she is selective… we do not know about cats. If you have children, they need to be 14+ years old because of her boundless energy and strength. She is a ball of happy energy! And very pretty also.

Called to ask more questions at 973-728-2859 or stop by during our open hours. Xena will fill your home with happiness 🐾

We have two duos huddled up together this morning, Mouse with Matilda and Sylvester with Stan! There’s nothing like another cat to keep you warm.

We love seeing our residents become friends. Not only are their snuggles beneficial with this cold weather, but they provide comfort and security.

Our four friends here are all timid and feel safer with other cats than they do people, but they’re doing well with accepting our love and are becoming braver by the day!

We’re open today from 10am to 1pm if you’d like to pay them a visit. Don’t forget your hat and gloves! ☃️

Roxanne says hello!

She’s been more inquisitive lately, approaching visitors in the Big Cattery and asking for pets. Her favorite spot is still up on the shelves but she’s been more outgoing. Sometimes she rolls over and shows her belly! We’ve noticed she has a little white patch on it.

Roxanne is 9 years old and would do well in a household with another calm cat. She’s easygoing and just wants a quiet place to call home!

Can you tell that Linus wants to be the center of attention?

Yeah, he makes it a little obvious. But he’s been at the shelter for 60 days and counting, so he’s antsy to go home! He’s a sweet senior boy and is so gentle. He has a constant purr that he shares with everyone and he will make biscuits for each visitor.

Linus doesn’t prefer to be picked up by people he doesn’t know but if you spend enough time with him, he will walk onto your lap. He loves his wet food, cuddling with other cats, and chin scratches. He’s a very happy-go-lucky guy and warms up to strangers after some petting.

Linus is 10 years old and would do great in a home with other cats. He doesn’t mind young children and while he’s never met a dog before, he seems unbothered by our dog residents barking outside. If Linus has sparked your interest, stop in and fill out a pre-adopt form! You can spend as much time with him as you’d like during our open hours, which are 10am-1pm today.

We’d like to share Bitsy’s progress with everyone!

She’s in our Library Cattery and used to always stay scrunched in a ball. We never saw her move and she flinched upon any movement. She cringed when we tried to pet her and was very afraid. If anyone was nearby her eyes were glued to them, she wanted to make sure she wasn’t going to be snuck up on.

Recently though, she’s gotten up and walked around in front of our volunteers. She likes to sit on top of the shelves instead of under them. She’ll even do a big stretch and yawn right in front of us. And when breakfast is served in the morning, she comes right out of bed to wait for her plate! She’s beginning to trust us. We actually never knew what her legs looked like. We never saw her stand up. Now we know they’re all white!

Bitsy is a beautiful girl and we’re so happy to see her become more lively. Everyone has picked up on her bravery, pointing her out in the cattery now because she was always hidden. We know when Bitsy is adopted into a home she will continue to blossom into the friendly cat she’s destined to be. Help us out and share this post so we can find her forever family!

Meet Silas!

Silas is one of many cats we received from an overcrowded home. He is 9 years old and we recently added him into our Library Cattery. He’s now with five other cats he knew from his old home and has plenty of company.

So far he’s been hiding under the shelves or staying in hidey beds with his roommates, but we know in due time he will feel comfortable enough to be out in the open. We’re ready when he is. Silas accepts petting and likes when we sit and talk to him. He’s a big guy but he’s very gentle!

He needs an owner who understands it will take time for him to trust humans and come out of his shell. It would be great for him to be adopted into a home with other cats, as he’s very used to them and enjoys their presence. We know Silas has great potential and we hope everyone else sees it, too.

Sylvester is here to greet you all this Tuesday morning!

He resides in our Library Cattery with five roommates who he loves to snuggle with. When it comes to other cats, he’s a total cuddle bug! He is very affectionate towards them.

He’s a little wary of humans as he was neglected by them in the past, but he’s made great progress with us so far. He doesn’t hiss anymore and we’re able to pet all the way down his back. He’s starting to enjoy physical touch! We’re very proud of him.

If you’d like to visit Sylvester or his roommates, we’re open from 10am to 1pm today. He’ll be waiting!

Some of our cats don’t have a simple and smooth road to adoption. For example, we’ve had this guy since July. Here is his story:

He was brought to us because he didn’t get along with other cat in the home, despite all of the previous owner’s efforts to make it work. He also had a bad habit of spraying, which is most commonly a behavior of unneutered male cats. But he was already fixed and we had even brought him to our vet twice for confirmation. We were pretty stumped and for months we struggled to figure out the cause.

We decided to pursue further medical testing. This included an ultrasound and elaborate bloodwork, and it revealed that he was never fully neutered. It turns out he had unilateral cryptorchidism which affects less than 2% of cats! We knew he was special, but we didn’t know to that degree.

He then had an exploratory and very invasive surgery in attempt to locate his misplaced testicle, and it was a complete success! He cooperated very well afterwards, always taking his meds and keeping his soft surgery cone on. We were very impressed with him.

Post-surgery, he was a new guy. He never sprayed once. He wasn’t territorial anymore and all of his dominant behaviors were put to rest. And the best part of all- he no longer had an issue with other cats. We never heard him hiss at one again. He grew to love them and met his best friend across the adoption room, Noah. We let them roam around together and they were like two peas in a pod. Noah was adopted about two weeks ago, and today it was his turn. The wait was over!

Goose… ADOPTED!

Put your paws together for Goose, everyone! We are beyond happy about his transformation and can’t wait to hear about how he thrives in his new home. His new parents are so excited! 🪿
