SOS Pets of Ouachita

SOS Pets of Ouachita We are a nonprofit group raising private funds to build a new public animal shelter - Ouachita Paris

SOS Pets of Ouachita seeks to raise tax-deductible private donations to construct a new shelter, to replace the existing 1950’s Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter facility. This facility remains in use today and has evolved into an open-admittance facility with an annual intake of ~6,000 animals per year, serving multiple regional parishes, with minimal surrender fees per type of animal. In early 2017

after reports of newborn puppies freezing to death in the shelter, a group of private citizens formed the nonprofit organization, SOS (Save Our Shelter) Pets of Ouachita, with its primary goal of privately funding a new public shelter, to replace the existing facility. From an initial deposit of $1.00, today's cash, in-kind donations and pledged funds have grown to over $1M, with a median private contribution of $20. Due to overwhelming community support to build an all-new animal shelter at a new location instead of piecemealing at the existing undesirable location, the SOS Pets Board of Directors sought and secured 5 acres of donated land to build the new facility. Please help if you can! 100% of the proceeds go to the Shelter Fund. This is a labor of love, and all our time is donated to this cause.

Woofstock 24 was extra special for us this year. The organizers of the event chose to honor the life and legacy of one of our founding members, Rita G Warner Tucker, whom we suddenly and unexpectedly lost 10/10/2024.

Rita was a lifelong pet advocate with significant contributions to NELA pets in need. She helped organize the successful effort to outlaw roadside pet sales. She led the first OPAS Advisory Committee. She most recently helped launch new local rescue, Help Meowt Feline Rescue. She saved countless animals by fostering them until they could be rescued. She was an expert bottle feeder to orphaned newborn kittens, and she never turned away a kitten in need.

Yet to us, she was a loyal and dedicated board member in support of our cause to raise funds to build a new shelter. She came up with the name for our group, which has been become one of the most successful nonprofit groups in our community’s history. More importantly, she was our friend and will be sadly missed.

It was touching to see the newly-branded “Rita Tucker Animal Advocacy Award” presented to this year’s winner, Roxanne Smith. We were so honored that members of Rita’s family were on hand to witness the unveiling and presentation of this prestigious award.

We love and miss you Rita. We promise to make you proud.🐾❤️🐾

Featured Pet SUGAR!!!

Sugar is a country girl who lives life to the fullest and has an interesting past! She’s survived 3 separate battles with snakes 🐍 and is on record for running faster than a coyote! She once hitched a ride with a stranger, but thanks to her GPS collar, she made it safely back home to her dad Dennis Cooper!

At Woofstock 24,she was appropriately dressed as a bag of sugar (a last-minute costume, courtesy of Christy Acree with help from Yolanda Duchesne Tannehill), since she’s the sweetest girl everrrr!

PS “Cousin” Charley was cheering her on for her debut in her first pet pageant!

Join us in thanking Delta K-9 Solutions and DKS Mobile Grooming for being our Title Sponsors at our pet festival, Woofstock 24, for the 3rd year in a row!
Both are top-rated pet companies right here in North Louisiana.
DKS is mobile, which means you don't have to go in for your dog to be groomed, you schedule a time for them to come to your home at your convenience. They offer a range of services and products designed to best fit your dog's needs. They will also host dog grooming, nail trims, painting, and more at our event. All funds raised will be donated to SOS Pets of Ouachita.
Delta K-9 offers award-winning dog training services ranging from pup to adult. The best way we can describe them is for you to come out to Woofstock this Saturday at Lazarre Park in West Monroe for their 2 training demonstrations. Questions are encouraged!

Who remembers Brando (now Gunnar)? He survived 6 months at Friends of Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter - OPAS, thanks to the determination of the shelter staff to save him. Well, it paid off because he is living his best life with Jaime Turnpaugh Kurowsky!

Special thanks to Mary Helen Wilborn, Emily Fitzgerald Goode, Ginger Hubenthal Padgett and Kim Tumlison. Sometimes there’s a happy ending like this that helps make the bad days a little more bearable

Rita G Warner Tucker recently helped organize this new group, Help Meowt Feline Rescue, and she was trying to help launch it. We are honored to help with this cause. Please like and share their page, and consider a memorial donation in Rita’s name. It would have pleased her greatly, as it does us.
