We have wrapped up our 2024 hay season! At Sandy Hill Farm, we make majority of the hay we feed to our horses (other than alfalfa).

With that said, do you know how your horses' hay is made? We do it in four steps over about 3 days: mowing the grass down, tedding it, raking it, then bailing it.

After the grass is cut with a mower, it is left in the field for about 24 hours to dry. Once the top layer is dry, we run the tedder over the rows the mower left to spread everything around so the hay can dry more quickly and more evenly. The next day, we use the rake to put the hay into small rows. This process also turns over the hay so the damp hay on the bottom is flipped to the top. The rows sit like this for another day. On the third and final day, some rows are combined to make larger rows so it's easier to bale. Once rows are ready, we start using the baler. This year, we started utilizing EZ Trail Bale Baskets. This is attached behind the baler and the bales fall into the basket, so we don't have to pick them up out if the field.

Making hay comes with a lot of hard work and long days, but it's very satisfying!
