Burnt paw pads not only are painful but they run the risk of infection. An easy way to test the pavement or black top is to touch the top of your hand to the surface for seven seconds. If you cannot keep your hand there for seven seconds, it is too hot of a surface for your dog. So what's the solution? Walk your pet in the early morning or dusk when the pavement/blacktop are not too hot. Stay on grassy surfaces and limit walk time especially in the middle of the day. ALWAYS remember to bring along water for your pet and if you notice burnt paw pads, contact your veterinarian for the proper course of treatment at home or in the hospital. Safety keeps the fun in summer!
