January is definitely one of the coldest months of the year, and we have to have a keen eye on our pets! Do you know the best safety tips for your pet as the temperature drops? Here's a great guide from the ASPCA to help get you through the colder months in one piece.

Exposure to winter’s dry, cold air and chilly rain, sleet and snow can cause chapped paws and itchy, flaking skin, but these aren’t the only discomforts pets can suffer. To help prevent cold weather dangers from affecting your pet’s health, please heed this advice from our experts.

With temperatures at a record low in our area, here are some safety tips for your pets. For our pets with arthritis, the cold weather can make their joints more achy and stiff. Arthritic and elderly pets also may have more difficulty walking on snow and ice and may be more prone to slipping and falling. Pet owners may want to consider adding a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication and/or joint supplement to help get them through the coldest weeks of the year. Also, sweaters and pajamas can provide extra warmth to aching joints.
Additionally, according to the AVMA, pets with diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, or hormonal imbalances (such as Cushing's disease) may have a harder time regulating their body temperature, and may be more susceptible to problems from temperature extremes. The same goes for very young and very old pets. If you need help determining your pet's temperature limits, give us a call and consult with a member of our team.
Please also keep in mind that short-haired pets feel the cold faster because they have less protection, and short-legged pets may become cold faster because their bellies and bodies are more likely to come into contact with snow-covered ground. A pet's activity level can also affect their tolerance level. And remember to wipe paws after being outdoors as they may have stepped on unsafe melting salts or in antifreeze- which commonly leaks from cars during the winter months and can smell and taste sweet to animals but is very toxic. The PRVH team hopes everyone stays warm and safe! 🐾
