Toxic toads & protecting pets
Nonnative species often have negative impacts on native wildlife, but DYK they sometimes pose a danger to pets?

Cane toads, also called bufo or marine toads, are invasive amphibians in central and south FL that are highly toxic to curious pets (and native wildlife). Cane toads protect themselves by producing a toxic secretion from glands on their skin that is poisonous to potential predators, including dogs or cats that try to mouth or consume them. Cane toads are often found in yards during rainy, warm days, but you can help prevent encounters with pets by removing cane toad attractants and places where they might hide:

• Keep an eye on pets, especially at night when cane toads are most active.
• Keep grass short and trim the underside of shrubs.
• Fill in any holes around structures.
• Clear away brush piles and remove clutter.
• Feed pets indoors and bring any outdoor pet food and water bowls inside at night.
• Clean up any food scraps from outside tables and grills. (Cane toads sometimes eat pet & people food.)

If removing one of these nonnative toads from your yard, first make sure that it’s actually an invasive cane toad and not a native southern toad or other native frog species. You’ll also want to wear protective gear – handling them can irritate your skin and eyes. “These findings suggest that natural dehydrated feed favored the digestibility of fiber and mineral matter and stimulated the antioxidant and immune system compared to extruded dry feed,” the researchers wrote.
