Greta is my sweet girl who managed to get her head stuck in the panel leg last week. She seems to be doing just fine as she was able to take her babysitting shift this morning with no complaints. I can’t wait until her baby arrives - she is paired with Kier, registered black highland this year. ❤️🐮🐮❤️

I need some clarification on Dilution vs Genetically White. This girl is 1/2 Galloway, 1/4 Highland, and 1/4 British white with a sprinkle of dexter in the british white to account for the chondro + status. Does the mixing of all these breeds flubber up the dilution results? Or...I just ran across this "genetically white" term. Are white dexters genetically white? Is that how she is white with no dilution? Trying to learn more about color and welcome any thoughts!

other random facts: Maternal Grandmother is full yellow highland, mom is half registered white galloway, half full yellow highland. Dad is half belted galloway, half chondro + british white. The british white sire had fabulous curls - looked more like my registered galloway bull.

**SOLD** Freida is a British white/Galloway cross with a beautiful 1/2 highland bull cal at her side. She is 46” and will take treats from our hand. She’s a nice, level headed cow who doesn’t freak out getting in a trailer or chute. I am offering her to reduce my trips as we move to Tennessee. Bull calf parentage, color, and horn status test is pending. Calf is 1 month. Health cert provided and transportation can be recommended. South Central Missouri

It’s those side curls for me… and there’s just no hiding the fact that I’m really hard on gates. I just want the world to know that my husband hung those red gates perfectly, I just can’t drive.

How do I halter train my calves? There are undoubtedly SO MANY ways to halter train calves. At our farm, the magic has a lot to do with the temperament of our cattle, but we have our share of spicy babies! This is what works best for me:

I wait until the calves are 6 months old and separate them from their mommas. I don't fence wean because the little buggers nearly hang themselves trying to nurse through the fences. I put them in a smaller area where they can't see their mom. I make a square just inside the gate with panels. I open them in the middle and I feed just inside the gate (inside my open square) for a few days. I walk away while they eat. I give them unlimited hay and fresh water, and twice a day, I give them scoop (1.5lbs each) of this mix: 1/2 Calf Starter, 1/4 Calf Manna, 1/4 Alfalfa Pellets, and a little bit of sweet feed. Then for a few days, I stand there while they eat. Then for a few days, I drop the feed and exit my opening in the panels and hide out until they go in to eat. I close the panels with me inside! Ha! Captured! I walk around them while they eat and touch their backs as they freak out and try to get away. Sometimes I'll brush them while they eat.

As soon as they are used to me being annoying while they eat, I put a rope halter over a small bowl of grain and while they are eating it, I slip it over their nose and ears. This can take a few tries! Once they have a rope halter on, I tie them to the fence or gate after they are done eating for about 30 minutes and brush them. Every day. When they finally figure out I'm the good guy and stand for brushing without dodging and fighting for freedom, I start walking them. I don't ever pull or drag them. If they don't move, I put a bit of pressure on the rope until the take a step forward and then I release the pressure so they feel the freedom they get when they walk toward me. I don't bribe them with treats because I won't always have treats when I need to put a rope halter on them and lead them somewhere. Once they have it down, I can drop to once a week, then every few weeks, then every few months.

It's work. But it is rewarding! And you can't put a price on being able to walk up to your cattle, put a rope halter on them, and lead them to another pasture, or the squeeze chute!

OH! And most importantly... you must talk to them like a toddler who just went potty all by themselves. LOL! Lone Pine Miniature Cattle Company

I love halter work. It fills my cup to work with these sweet babies and earn their trust. This is Jemma. She’s 26” at 6 months and non chondro. Her little tiny nose and dreamy eyes melt my heart. The world pauses for a minute while these little friends feed my soul. ❤️🐮❤️ I haven’t decided if Jemma will stay on my farm. Her parent test hasn’t been sent because… life. But I suspect her daddy is Shaq.
