Would he look good in your pasture? Non-chondro 18” at birth. Mom 42”, Dad 37”.
How do I halter train my calves? There are undoubtedly SO MANY ways to halter train calves. At our farm, the magic has a lot to do with the temperament of our cattle, but we have our share of spicy babies! This is what works best for me:
I wait until the calves are 6 months old and separate them from their mommas. I don't fence wean because the little buggers nearly hang themselves trying to nurse through the fences. I put them in a smaller area where they can't see their mom. I make a square just inside the gate with panels. I open them in the middle and I feed just inside the gate (inside my open square) for a few days. I walk away while they eat. I give them unlimited hay and fresh water, and twice a day, I give them scoop (1.5lbs each) of this mix: 1/2 Calf Starter, 1/4 Calf Manna, 1/4 Alfalfa Pellets, and a little bit of sweet feed. Then for a few days, I stand there while they eat. Then for a few days, I drop the feed and exit my opening in the panels and hide out until they go in to eat. I close the panels with me inside! Ha! Captured! I walk around them while they eat and touch their backs as they freak out and try to get away. Sometimes I'll brush them while they eat.
As soon as they are used to me being annoying while they eat, I put a rope halter over a small bowl of grain and while they are eating it, I slip it over their nose and ears. This can take a few tries! Once they have a rope halter on, I tie them to the fence or gate after they are done eating for about 30 minutes and brush them. Every day. When they finally figure out I'm the good guy and stand for brushing without dodging and fighting for freedom, I start walking them. I don't ever pull or drag them. If they don't move, I put a bit of pressure on the rope until the take a step forward and then I release the pressure so they feel the freedom they get when they walk toward me. I don't bribe them with treats because I won't always have treats when I need to put a rope hal

My pledge as a breeder-
I will provide a picture of my animal with a drywall square confirming height at top line so there are no surprises when they get off the trailer at their new home.
I will provide a video with human interaction to show the animal’s disposition so you know exactly what to expect.
I will provide at no extra cost: a health certificate required by law for interstate travel through most states. This certificate is issued by a veterinarian.
Your animal will be up to date on all vaccinations.
I will provide a BVD test and I’m happy to have my vet test for any other disease at your expense.
By asking for these things, you are not being a “pain in my butt”. You are being an educated buyer. I will not skip you and sell to the “easy buyer” because the demand is greater than the supply.
This pledge is me doing everything I can to make sure you are thrilled with your purchase and happily recommend me to your friends.
Transparency and full disclosure are extremely important in our mini cattle industry.
Pledge to be the kind of seller you want to buy from.
Pledge to be an educated buyer. Do your due diligence. There are so many breeders out there willing to mentor.
Let’s all do better!
