This week's segment features Butch the 1 year old Jack Russell Terrier!!! 🐾🪨Butch had his routine neuter performed and after he returned home he started profusely vomiting. While we initially suspected it may be a reaction to the anesthesia we took an abdominal radiograph and Butch had eaten a large rock!!! Dogs (and cats) can easily ingest toys, rocks, clothing and other various foreign materials. While some of the time these items can pass through the intestines, however if they become stuck or cause an obstruction they are a life threatening emergency and without proper treatment can result in death of the pet. Butch underwent emergency foreign body surgery where the rock and a few inches of his intestine were removed. Unfortunately due to the large size of the rock and the length of time it was in his intestines, his intestines had started to die around where the rock was located. Dr. Emerson performed an intestinal resection and anastomosis where the damaged part of the intestine was removed and then the intestines sutured back together again creating a healthy gut from end to end. Any time that your pet has continuous vomiting, especially if they are unable to keep down water, whether or not they have a history of eating foreign objects, its extremely important to bring them in for evaluation. After a week of intensive hospitalization, Butch fully recovered from his surgery and is happy, healthy and back home!!! 🪨🐾
This weeks segment features Toby the 12 year old dachshund!! 🐾 Toby came to us with vomiting and diarrhea after he had eaten a porkchop. We ran some bloodwork in house and Toby had an elevated white blood cell count (indication of inflammation) in addition to elevations in his amylase and lipase. Amylase and lipase are the fat content within the bloodstream, and when they are elevated they can cause the pancreas to become inflamed. We checked a CPL (pancreatitis test) and unfortunately Toby's levels were so high they were off the charts!!! Thankfully here at Emerson Animal Hospital we have a new medication called Panoquell made specifically to treat the leukocyte response in pancreatitis in dogs. After just one dose, Toby's pancreatic levels were almost back down to normal!! Pancreatitis can be a severe condition that can ultimately lead to death if not treated promptly or aggressively. Most of the time, patients with pancreatitis would need several days of intensive hospitalization. Now that Panoquell is available, hospitalization stays can be lessened to overnight or even just a few days!! Thanks to the Panoquell and Dr. Emerson, Toby is back to his normal self!! 🐶
Last weeks segment features Madison the 11 year old soft coated wheaten terrier!! 🐾 Madison came to us when her owners noticed that she was very dull and would not come out from under the bed. On presentation, Madison had a very grey or dull appearance. She was too weak to stand and we noticed that she had a very distended abdomen. Ultrasound showed that Madison had fluid within her abdomen which is extremely abnormal. Turns out, Madison had a tumor on her spleen that had ruptured and she was bleeding out internally!!! Thankfully with quick action from Dr. Emerson and Dr. Janzen Madison's spleen was successfully removed. She received a blood transfusion to replace the blood she lost in her abdomen and was discharged a few days later. We are happy to announce that Madison's biopsy came back without any signs of cancer, and her splenic mass was just a large hematoma. If you notice your pet has a severely distended abdomen, or is dull and lethargic, this can be a medical emergency and your pet should be seen as soon as possible. 🐾🐾
This week’s segment features Puffy the 7 year old boxer mix!! 🐾 Puffy came to us after becoming acutely lame on his hind leg. Upon examination, we found that Puffy had ruptured his cranial cruciate ligament (similar to the ACL in people) in his knee. CCL tears in dogs are a frequent injury that can result due to genetic predisposition or your pet being overweight. 80% of dogs that tear the CCL in one knee will tear the other knee within the first 2 years. Unfortunately, medical management is rarely successful and surgical repair will provide your pet with the best chance of full recovery. Puffy underwent our extracapsular lateral suture stabilization surgery and after 8 weeks he was cleared to return back to normal activity. This month we will be offering special deals on our CCL and other orthopedic procedures and products!! 🦴

This week’s segment features Pangurban the 8 year old cat!! 🐈Pangurban came to us for hiding, excessive salivation, and not wanting to eat. On examination we found that Pangurban was suffering from stomatitis. Stomatitis in cats is a complex, painful, and frustrating disease that causes severe inflammation of the entire mouth, including the gingiva (gum tissue around the teeth) and mucous membranes. While gingivitis only affects the gingiva—or gumline—where the tooth meets the mucus membrane of the gums, stomatitis in cats is a much more severe form of inflammation in the mouth and involves more than just the gingiva. Stomatitis can affect the gums, lips, tongue, the roof and the floor of a cat’s mouth. While most cases of gingivitis in cats are tolerated, stomatitis is painful and debilitating. Treatment includes performing a dental prophy to scale the plaque off the teeth which can be one of the inciting causes of the inflammation. Additional methods of treatment include laser therapy to help with the inflammation and pain. We also carry several supplements and wipes to help prevent plaque from forming back on the teeth and immune and inflammation modulators. Thanks to this regime, Pangurban is back to her normal self and is living a pain free life! 🦷
This weeks segment features Freyja the Neapolitan Mastiff!! 🐾Freyja came to us and was diagnosed with pyometra, a life threatening infection filled uterus. Pyometra can occur in any female that is un-spayed, and is most common in older female dogs. Pyometra is caused by continued elevations in the hormone, progesterone, which predisposes them to the infection each cycle that they have. Signs of pyometra include foul smelling discharge and bleeding from the vulva, overall lethargy, and vomiting. If left untreated, pyometra can cause the uterus to rupture in the abdomen leading to sepsis and ultimately death. Thankfully, Freyja's owners recognized the signs of pyometra immediately in her and she was brought in and underwent an emergency spay that afternoon. Freyja's uterus ended up weighing over 6 pounds from all the infection!! After a few days in hospital to receive intravenous antibiotics and medications, Freyja was discharged, made a full recovery, and has since been acting like a puppy again!! 💙
This weeks segment features Gizmo the 7 year old yorkie! 🐾 Gizmo came to us for excessive itching and scratching at his body and ears. Gizmo was diagnosed and treated for atopic dermatitis which is an allergy flare in dogs with a subsequent yeast and bacterial infection in the skin and ears. One of the great products we have here at Emerson Animal Hospital is our line of Atopivet products from Dechra. These products help to maintain the lipid barrier of the skin and decrease the allergic response which causes the discomfort and itchiness. We also carry additional products to target yeast and bacterial infections in the skin. We strive to get your pet to a healthy maintenance level with regards to allergies as we know this can be one of the most frustrating things to deal with as a pet owner. 🐾
Petey Splenectomy
Last weeks segment features Petey the mixed breed dog!! 🐾 Petey came to us to have some masses removed and his owners elected to perform pre-operative bloodwork to assess his organ function before anesthesia. Unfortunately, Petey had some changes in his liver values which prompted us to do an ultrasound of his abdomen. During the ultrasound, we found a large mass on his spleen!! Had we not run the pre-operative bloodwork we would have never found this tumor as early as we did and it could have ruptured and caused him to bleed out internally. Running his labs before surgery literally saved his life!! Petey underwent a splenectomy where we removed the spleen in its entirety and made a full recovery. Thankfully for Petey- the tumor was not cancerous!! We recommend every pet that comes in for an anesthetic procedure have pre-operative bloodwork to allow us to assess that all organs are functioning properly and that anesthesia can be performed safely. In cases like Petey's, it can save their life! 💉
